It is necessary for the architect to found his work on a perfect knowledge of the "place", capturing its soul and character, retracing all the changes that have accompanied it over time. Therefore, this knowledge process cannot be limited to documentary investigations (albeit necessary), because the analyzed sources often provide only partial answers on the origins, transformations and changing processes of the pre-existing architectural environment. Furthermore, the collection of metric, chromatic and material data and of any other relevant information has to take into account the essential need to formulate a survey project preliminary to the intervention that, based on a critical process and in close connection with the project purposes, makes use of all opportunities offered by today's modern acquis...

However, the near disappearance of those very traditional sectors of production has lead to the decline of this area, and the notable decrease in its population. Numerous small rural towns, farms, and extraordinary underground structures are on the verge of disappearing, threatened by the depredations of time, weather, and vandalism. Very often inaccessible, these eloquent examples of the island’s cultural landscape are no longer actively integrated into the life of the region. However, if properly studied, protected, re-used, and reconnected to the territory, this heritage could help to reinforce the local cultural identity, and also bring positive changes to the socio-economic conditions of the communities concerned. This paper aims to explore all of these aspects, focusing a...

Its importance is related to its hypothesized origin as an Arian cathedral, later converted into a Catholic temple and described by Paolo Diacono. The magnificence of ancient times has been today forgotten. All that remains of the building is the crypt: an ‘abandoned’ and scarcely valued monument that deserves to be further investigated and valorised. A new study has then been carried out within a larger project of knowledge, conservation and enhancement of the legacy of the Lombard Kingdom. The research, based on a meticulous historical-archaeological inquiry, was characterized by the study of documentary sources (traditional and complementary) and the stratigraphic analysis of the masonries. The project was characterized by the use of modern survey and diagnostic technologies as well as of the most innovative tools of dig...

Today, in fact, historic cities have to face hard challenges, in a global framework that presents new problems and that clamor for as many innovative solutions. We are therefore talking about a complex issue of great interest (as showed by the countless meetings that have been organized at national and local level in recent years), but still to be deepened. An issue that involves the political class, the professionals, the operators of the sector and the citizens, and this although it is one of the topics that have shaped and characterized the Italian specialist debate in the second half of the 20th century, and originated its greatest contribution to the international urban planning. Confronted with market pressures, historic cities are now threatened by both old and new dangers, in the face of which existing regulations do not allow adequate solutions. ...

In this study, drawing - resulting from the combination of established cultural patterns and the control of technological innovation has been tconsidered as a primary tool of study, critical knowledge and documentation aimed at the preservation of the ancient architecture of the town, and at the revaluation of its strategic role in the early middle ages.

French experience in the field of architectural and urban heritage preservation is a recognized r... more French experience in the field of architectural and urban heritage preservation is a recognized reference in Europe and in the world. In the course of time, France has actually produced a legislative apparatus of the most comprehensive and articulated, supporting the evolution of heritage concept, from the monument to the architectural ensemble, from the historic centers to the urban landscape including its tangible and intangible components. More recently, traditional urban planning tools also consider heritage issues, trying to bring them into line with the main factors of urban development. In line with the recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape, adopted on November 10, 2011 by UNESCO’s General Conference, the idea of “heritage safeguarding” strictly combined with that of “quality of life” is now increasingly at the core of French cultural concerns. The objective is to build a perennial great project through the implementation of stable, innovative and dynamic policies, a...

The creation of three-dimensional models for the cataloguing and documentation of cultural herita... more The creation of three-dimensional models for the cataloguing and documentation of cultural heritage is today an emerging need in the cultural sphere and, above all, for museums. The cultural heritage is still catalogued and documented based on descriptive files assorted of photographic images which, however, fail to outline its spatial richness, possible only through the use of 3D artefacts. The essay aims to propose a methodology of digitalization by low-cost and easy-to-use systems, to be employed even by non-expert survey and photogrammetry's operators. The case study of the statue of San Nicola da Tolentino, preserved at the Sant'Agostino complex in Bergamo, offered the possibility of a comparison between 3D models acquired with different digitalization tools (professional/action/ amateur cameras and smartphone) and processed by several image-based 3D Reconstruction software and methods.

They are the finest mosaics from the Roman world and, even because of their exceptional extent, the Villa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Their in situ conservation advocated by Cesare Brandi in the late 1950s, an exception to the typical treatment of excavated mosaics of the time, requires a regular monitoring of the physical condition and the establishment of mitigation strategies, however, difficult to implement especially for economic and technical reasons. In this sense, this paper intends to propose an innovative and user-friendly procedure based on laser scanning and thermo-hygrometric investigations able to assess the tessellatum status through time and to evaluate the maintenance work’s efficiency, which could be included in a long-term and sustainable approach to preserving our ancient mosaic heritage.

In particular, World Heritage sites are outstanding example among the countless testimonies of the past and may constitute a source of inspiration for building or strengthening the sense of identity of local communities of which they are a concrete manifestation. Based on some experiences conducted on both the Villa Romana del Casale and the historic center of Piazza Armerina, this work focuses on the role of survey, seen as a valuable tool for the understanding and transmission to future generations of genius loci.

To the end of cultural heritage conservation, it is furthermore necessary to communicate the acquired knowledge. In the recent years, this need has resulted in a radical change in cataloging and digitization systems, as well as in telematics networking. Moreover, the use of 3D laser scanner has transformed not only the approaches related to metrics data acquisition and graphic rendering but has also afforded the opportunity to share important information on the web. This paper focuses on the usefulness of state-of-the-art technologies for documentation, presenting a case study related to the architectural-archeological area of Aruch in Armenia.
