Au cours des dernières décennies, la recherche sur l’aristocratie romaine s’est largement diversi... more Au cours des dernières décennies, la recherche sur l’aristocratie romaine s’est largement diversifiée en s’ouvrant, au-delà des aspects politiques et prosopographiques bien défrichés, à de nouvelles problématiques telles que les formes de communication des élites, la sémiologie du pouvoir ou encore les apports entre les pratiques politiques et l’espace. La monographie s’insère dans ces nouvelles approches et y apporte une importante innovation : si l’espace de la vie aristocratique a longtemps été conçu de façon dichotomique entre urbs et rus, entre domus et uilla, le travail proposé démontre la pertinence d’un troisième espace trop longtemps négligé par la recherche, les horti résidentiels de Rome. L’étude des jardins en tant que résidences aristocratiques, situées dans des espaces verdoyants en dehors et en même temps très proches de la ville, permet de remplacer la dichotomie domus-uilla par le triptyque domus-horti-uilla, de découvrir un cadre peu connu de l’action politique, ainsi que les conditions et potentialités des interactions spécifiques à ce troisième lieu de résidence. L’étude des horti s’appuie sur une analyse systématique de l’ensemble des sources littéraires. Elle prend en compte les données archéologiques lorsqu’elles sont conservées et disponibles. L’étude de l’historiographie des jardins est le préalable de la conceptualisation de l’objet de recherche.

Née en 1900 à Alger, Juliette Ernst a été la rédactrice, puis la directrice de L'Année Philologiq... more Née en 1900 à Alger, Juliette Ernst a été la rédactrice, puis la directrice de L'Année Philologique de 1929 jusqu'aux années 1990. Débutant son travail à L'APh aux côtés de Jules Marouzeau, qui en avait été le fondateur en 1926, Juliette Ernst participe au processus de modernisation de la bibliographie qui traverse alors toutes les sciences et que soutient la Société des Nations. Juliette Ernst a ensuite suivi Jules Marouzeau dans un autre projet d'envergure internationale, la Fédération Inter nationale des associations d'Études Classiques, où elle oeuvre comme secrétaire depuis sa fondation, en 1948, jusqu'en 1974. Avec ses deux carrières, elle dévoile en fait un même domaine de compétences, que l'on peut résumer par la fabrique des relations internationales entre spécialistes des sciences de l'Antiquité. Cette enquête retrace l'histoire de ces deux outils de coopération internationale que Juliette Ernst a su conjuguer des décennies durant au profit des antiquisants du monde entier.

Le latiniste français Jules Marouzeau inscrit la création de L'Année philologique dans ce même mouvement. L'histoire des origines de la revue, à lire en regard des ambitions professionnelles de J. Marouzeau, offre un point de vue nouveau sur la rivalité scientifique qui se joue autour de la bibliographie, outil de la science et vecteur d'internationalisation.

In the early twentieth century, bibliography was subject to a large-scale reform effort, spearhea... more In the early twentieth century, bibliography was subject to a large-scale reform effort, spearheaded by institutions such as the League of Nations and the International Institute on Intellectual Cooperation, which attempted to internationalize scientific practices. The French Latinist Jules MAROUZEAU conceived his newly created bibliography L'Année philologique as a part of that movement. The history of the publication's origins, which should be read in light of MAROUZEAU's professional ambitions, provides a new perspective on the scientific rivalry around bibliography, a tool for science and a driver of internationalization.

J. Ernst a aussi été la secrétaire de la Fédération Internationale des Associations d'Études Classiques (FIEC) depuis sa fondation, de 1948 à 1974. Avec ses deux carrières, J. Ernst dévoile en fait un même domaine de compétences, que l'on peut résumer par la fabrique des relations internationales entre savants spécialisés en sciences de l'Antiquité. L'objet de cet article est de présenter la situation documentaire du projet de recherche sur J. Ernst, en historicisant les traces qu'hommes et femmes du monde académique ont laissées et en interrogeant en regard l'emprise qu'avait J. Ernst sur les sciences de l'Antiquité.

It would be mistaken, however, to equate this lack of visibility with insignificance and absence. Since the s, research into women's history has shown that women were present in the political, religious, and economic practices of ancient cultures: women's agency in the ancient world long remained underestimated until scholars turned their attention to it. Pierre Grimal’s 1943 thesis on Roman gardens, the birth of archaeology of gardens and the recent ... more Pierre Grimal’s 1943 thesis on Roman gardens, the birth of archaeology of gardens and the recent opening of museum spaces dedicated to Roman gardens are three founding moments of the modern history of gardens. Since the Renaissance period, however, successive readings of archaeological remains, and Latin and Greek texts have fed the history of Roman gardens, overlays of interpretations, intellectual disputes, opposing and enriching points of views. “Roman Gardens”, as researchers comprehend the subject today, are the results of this history. The object of this chapter is to question the construction of the history of gardens, what we would otherwise call “historiography of Roman gardens”, by bringing to light the more or less visible presuppositions which define gardens, at a specific moment of the history of research.

We are glad to announce the publication of the inaugural issue of History of Classical Scholarship, a new Open Access journal exclusively devoted to the history of the studies on the Greek and Roman world.
We invite contributions on any aspects of the history of classical studies, in any geographical context, from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, and are keen to host papers covering the whole range of the discipline: from ancient history to literary studies, from epigraphy and numismatics to art history and archaeology, from textual criticism to religious and linguistic studies. We also welcome editions of significant items from the Nachlässe of classical scholars, including letters and documents that may shed light on matters of historical or historiographical interest.
We publish papers in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

ISBN: 9788822264244 L'histoire des jardins et de leur art a pendant longtemps été dominée par une tradition esthétisante de l'objet de recherche, qui excluait à peu près complètement le politique et le social des problématiques. Ce positionnement, qui appelle bien évidemment une (re)lecture informée des contextes historiographiques, a guidé les travaux des génies tutélaires de l'histoire des jardins. Pour n'en citer que trois, pensons par exemple à l'Allemande Marie-Luise Gothein (1863-1931), aux Français Georges Riat (1869-1905) et Pierre Grimal (1912-1996) qui, chacun à leur manière, partageaient une conception essentialiste des jardins en postulant une pérennité des sentiments que provoquaient les jardins, de l'Antiquité à nos jours. Aujourd'hui, à la lumière des nouvelles publications sur l'art des jardins, dont fait partie le bel ouvrage dirigé par Hervé Brunon et Denis Ribouillault, ces angles d'approche paraissent largement dépassés, amendés qu'ils sont par une réelle prise en compte du contexte historique et son interrogation grâce à des outils issus de champs disciplinaires aussi variés que la philosophie, la sociologie, l'histoire sociale et culturelle, la géographie, etc. Car, s'il y a un présupposé théorique à souligner dans l'argumentaire de ces actes de colloque internationaux, c'est que, pour D. Ribouillault et H. Brunon, qui ont tous deux participé à Dumbarton Oaks et au Centre André Chastel aux grands débats méthodologiques de l'histoire des jardins, le statut esthétique des jardins est indissociable des pratiques politiques, sociales et culturelles dont ils sont le lieu. Dans l'ouvrage présenté ici, intitulé « De la peinture au jardin », ce sont les transferts artistiques de la peinture vers les jardins qui sont plus particulièrement au centre de la discussion et qui sont questionnés de façon à faire voir les modalités discursives qui existent entre ces deux objets. Les contributeurs de l'ouvrage se proposent en effet d'inverser la problématique traditionnelle des rapports entre peinture et jardin, qui voit notamment l'inspiration et la source de la peinture dans la nature et le paysage, pour s'intéresser à ce que la peinture fait aux jardins.
