The town privileges were most often defined by rulers, and the fact gives rise to the question of how possibly could secular dignitaries regulate the rights related to church. The research managed to identify three ecclesiastical privileges normally found in basic town privileges. These are: free choice of priest, exemption of the parish from under the archdeacon’s authority and special regulation for paying tithes.

The first reference of the Zvolen County’s office is from the year 1222 when it was occupied by Detrik, the ancestor of Balaša family. Primarily he was an official (homo regius), later nominated to the already mentioned function. Trading transactions which he performed and donations which he obtained integrated him into higher aristocracy. Importance of the whole clan was strengthened by his sons and other descendants. They became not only heads of Zvolen County but administrators of other districts as well.
County’s heads were nominated by the king. Even they were kings’ delegates inside the county. The aristocracy presented their own interests to the king directly. The head of the Zvolen County was never a middleman in communication „nobility to king“. Only after reaction of the king he became a mediator in communication „king to nobility“.
The ancestors of the Balaša family exerted influence upon the office of the head of Zvolen County. Their military and political skills gave significance to this office.

Researching into his ancestors’ exact place of origin it was found out that they came from Nemecká Ľupča. As guards of the Polish confinium they probably excelled in their service and in return they were given large estates in Novohrad County, Hont County and Borsod County that initiated their social status growth in the Kingdom of Hungary. The first significant member of the family was Detrik I (1222 - 1236) called Magnus who is ascribed first great merits through which the family gained prestige.

Bystrica diocese the submitted study shows a relationship of society
and the Catholic Church in the 19th century in Hungary. The
analyses are not devoted to all moments and social events from the
mentioned period. The author sorts out three contrastive points,
where the lives of the bishops merged (religious and national
differences, and the revolution in 1848/ 49). The layout of the study
is therefore influenced by this selection. The approach of the
described clergymen to the already mentioned consequences was not the same. This is the reason why the author looks at their postures
and conditions, which formed their decisions. There was a great
influence of state organs found on a personal nomination for
an episcopal see. This was the main impact on the political
orientation of the candidates. The important role for the forming of
the bishops' opinion was the environment they were faced with.
