The twentieth century is often claimed by scholars to be a turning point for research in the fiel... more The twentieth century is often claimed by scholars to be a turning point for research in the field of literary criticism. The assumptions of the new theories in literary interpretation repeatedly undermine the previous basic literary categories and doubt the existence of an objective point of view. Considering these facts, the aim of this master's thesis is to analyze the works of Jack Kerouac, one of the most recognizable representatives of The Beat Generation, using the tools offered by the literary theory of new historicism. An in-depth exploration of the research problem using this approach in criticism sheds new light on the literary legacy of the counter-cultural hero and allows the exploration of issues of social and political nature. In order to penetrate the subject thoroughly, in the first chapter, the work refers to current theoretical knowledge in the field of literary theory, and, in the other two, offers a comprehensive analysis of the author's most important works, such as On the Road, The Dharma Bums, Big Sur, The Subterraneans and Pic.
