ABSTRACT The Groovepad is an input device that uses the physical frame of a regular touchpad as a... more ABSTRACT The Groovepad is an input device that uses the physical frame of a regular touchpad as an elastic force sensor to permit additional rate-control input. The two independent input sensors can be used separately, but facilitate frequent and fluent switching between position-controlled and rate-controlled interaction techniques. We studied the usability of the Groovepad in pointing, panning, and dragging tasks. Our observations indicate that the use of the two input sensors for the same functionality (e.g.,cursor control) can result in a decision dilemma, which adversely affects performance. As an alternative, we propose to use both sensors for complementary subtasks. For example, we performed workspace panning with the elastic frame of the Groovepad, while cursor motion was operated with the touchpad. This particular mapping possesses the compelling property that the frame of the touchpad serves as a tactile reference of the visual workspace. A user study revealed that our approach was preferred and performed significantly better than techniques that only used touchpad input.

Virtual photos and videos serve as threedimensional references to objects, places, moments in time and activities of users. Our Photoportals also provide access to intermediate or alternative versions of a scenario and allow the review of recorded task sequences that include life-size representations of the captured users. We propose to exploit such references to structure collaborative activities of collocated and remote users. Photoportals offer additional access points for multiple users and encourage mutual support through the preparation and provision of references for manipulation and navigation tasks. They support the pattern of territoriality with configurable space representations that can be used for private interaction, as well as be shared and exchanged with others.

In desktop applications 3D input devices are mostly operated by the non-dominant hand to control ... more In desktop applications 3D input devices are mostly operated by the non-dominant hand to control 3D viewpoint navigation, while selection and geometry manipulations are handled by the dominant hand using the regular 2D mouse. This asymmetric bi-manual interface is an alternative to commonly used keyboard and mouse input, where the non-dominant hand assists the dominant hand with keystroke input to toggle modes. Our first study compared the keyboard and mouse interface to bi-manual interfaces using the 3D input devices SpaceTraveller and Globefish in a coarse spatial orientation task requiring egocentric and exocentric viewpoint navigation. The different interface configurations performed similarly with respect to task completion times, but the bi-manual techniques resulted in significantly less errors. This result is likely to be due to better workload balancing between the two hands allowing the user to focus on a single task for each hand. Our second study focused on a bi-manual 3D point selection task, which required the selection of small targets and good depth perception. The Globefish interface employing position control for rotations performed significantly better than the SpaceTraveller interface for this task.

The device was developed for the 3D graphics applications such as computer aided design (CAD), digital content creation (DCC) and 3D games. The Globefish consists of an elastically suspended 3D trackball, which provides a natural mapping for position-controlled 3D rotations. 3D translations are rate-controlled through small displacements of the trackball against the elastic counterforces of the elastic suspension. The device is operated by the fingertips allowing for precise interaction with virtual objects.
The Pie Segment Slider is a novel parameter control interface combining the advantages of tangibl... more The Pie Segment Slider is a novel parameter control interface combining the advantages of tangible input with the customizability of a graphical interface representation. The physical part of the interface consists of a round touchpad, which serves as an appropriate sensor for manipulating ring-shaped sliders arranged around a virtual object. The novel interface concept allows to shift a substantial amount of interaction task time from task preparation to its exploratory execution. Our user study compared the task performance of the novel interface to a common touchpad-operated GUI and examined the task sequences of both solutions. The results confirm the benefits of exploiting tangible input and proprioception for operating graphical user interface elements.

We present a novel immersive telepresence system that allows distributed groups of users to meet ... more We present a novel immersive telepresence system that allows distributed groups of users to meet in a shared virtual 3D world. Our approach is based on two coupled projection-based multi-user setups, each providing multiple users with perspectively correct stereoscopic images. At each site the users and their local interaction space are continuously captured using a cluster of registered depth and color cameras. The captured 3D information is transferred to the respective other location, where the remote participants are virtually reconstructed. We explore the use of these virtual user representations in various interaction scenarios in which local and remote users are face-to-face, side-by-side or decoupled. Initial experiments with distributed user groups indicate the mutual understanding of pointing and tracing gestures independent of whether they were performed by local or remote participants. Our users were excited about the new possibilities of jointly exploring a virtual city, where they relied on a world-in-miniature metaphor for mutual awareness of their respective locations.

For benchmarking the different input modalities we implemented a set of evaluation tasks requiring viewpoint navigation, selection and object manipulation in a maze-like virtual environment. The results of the study reveal similar overall performance for both input modalities for compound tasks. However significant differences with respect to the involved subtasks were found. Furthermore we can show that the integral attributes of a subtask do not necessarily need to be manipulated by a single hand. Instead, the simultaneously required degrees of freedom for operating integrally perceived subtasks may also be distributed to both hands for better control.

Current surveys on passenger's experience during air travel reveal that they are least satisfied with the amount and effectiveness of their personal space, and their ability to work, sleep or rest. Moreover, considering current trends it is likely that the amount of available space is likely to decrease and therefore the passenger's physical comfort during a flight is likely to worsen significantly. Therefore, the main challenge is to enable the passengers to maintain a high level of comfort and satisfaction while being placed in a restricted physical space.
