The paper examines the philosophical model of the history of music that is portrayed in Thomas Ma... more The paper examines the philosophical model of the history of music that is portrayed in Thomas Mann's novel "Doktor Faustus". Based on Theodor W. Adorno's "Philosophy of Modern Music", Mann develops a dialectical model of history in which heroic componists like Monteverdi, Beethoven, and the novel's protagonist Adrian Leverkühn propel the development of music by manipulating musical material according to their own understanding of subjectivity vs. objectivity and contrapuntal rules vs. freedom of expression. Leverkühn is portrayed as the musical Weltgeist, unifying all musical movements of his time and overcoming the stagnation of musical progress which was inherent to the music of the late 19th and early 20th century after Wagner.

The paper examines Thomas Tallis's settings of the Lamentations of Jermiah against the background... more The paper examines Thomas Tallis's settings of the Lamentations of Jermiah against the background of historical developments in the Church of England during the Reformation under Henry VIII and his descendants. It gives an introduction to the text of the Lamentations as well as a musical analysis of Tallis's setting, which is revealed to be an extraordinary work of art, unique among the numerous settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah during the 16th century. Thoughts on the notation of the piece and its correct performance complete the thorough examination.

Thomas Tallis's body of vocal church music is considered to be a unique representation of the num... more Thomas Tallis's body of vocal church music is considered to be a unique representation of the numerous changes in liturgy and church music in Tudor England. The thesis explores Tallis's music against its historical background and gives a thorough introduction to this interesting body of music. Musical analyses of the most interesting works, such as "In ieiunio et fletu", the "Lamentations of Jeremiah", and ""Spem in alium" reveal Tallis to be a leading composer of his time, temporarily exploring avantgardistic approaches to composition and modal tonality. Thoughts concerning the purpose of Tallis's motets and their reception complete the thesis.
