Abstract. John Rogers Commons (1862-1945) was a prominent representative of
American institutionalism in the early decades of the 20th century. As a political
economist and sociologist, he developed an institutional approach, defining institutions
as collective actions which take place within given norms such as law, habits, and
customs. Additionally, he introduced the transaction as the smallest unit of
interaction in economic theory. Commons' studies of the labour market, the role of
law, and his social policy work in legislation made him one of the most influential
proponents of old institutional economics.

Georg Friedrich Knapp was a German economist whose most famous book is The State Theory of Money.... more Georg Friedrich Knapp was a German economist whose most famous book is The State Theory of Money. Knapp is known as the founder of the chartalist school of monetary theory. In contrast to other monetary theories, which focus on the exchange value of money, Knapp assumes that the value of money is created by the government's legal right to define it. The legal concepts are central to his economic argumentation. He saw this approach as applicable to all forms of money. With the assumption that a government is the position to create money by decree Knapp's theory has found considerable attention in the modern monetary theory.

Abstract: Elinor Ostrom changed the way of thinking about common-pool resources in economics. She provided an institutional analysis that shows how groups can find solutions to complex problems for collective goods. Ostrom showed that collective action can work among rational individuals. She and her husband Vincent objected privatization, nationalization, and centralized government for governing the commons. Instead, they promoted polycentric governance as a solution for many common-pool resources. Her approach is known as the Bloomington School of Political Economy, a thriving direction in Public Choice Theory.

This article summarises key concepts in Immanuel Wallerstein's book "Historical Capitalism" relat... more This article summarises key concepts in Immanuel Wallerstein's book "Historical Capitalism" related to the role of the cultural dimension of individualism-collectivism. These include the societal developments needed for the early formation of the labor market, the social construction of ethnical identities and the gradual assimilation of peripheral regions into the capitalism's labor force in order to counter the rise of labor income in countries of the core. According to the author, traditional kinds of division of labor between ethnic groups, family members and age horizontals are being intentionally brought to life to control the pace of proletization as quasi-proletarian ways of living require only minimal labor wages. At the same time in the ideological realm capitalism's development is usually presented as closely intertwined with modernism and science's progress, opposed to traditional, non-rational ways, but a number of traditions can be shown to have actually co-emerged with historical capitalism and not pre-dated it. This process is accompanied by the instalment of an universalistic and individualistic progressivist worldview among the intelligentsia classes, fostering the belief in competition and meritocracy, which has to enable the peaceful functioning of the tightly interconnected global capitalist system. In other words, capitalism's use of culture and ideology is a prerequisite for its spread and efficiency.

This article investigates the possible causal relationships between slow-changing cultural charac... more This article investigates the possible causal relationships between slow-changing cultural characteristics like collectivism and individualism and the economic development of nations. Evidence in the literature shows that there are at least two aspects of collectivism in a society that are important for its economic development. The first can be defined as the strength of collectivism and is related to how strictly individual actions are limited by the power of social norms or the extent to which group members feel socially obliged to give up personal gain for the benefit of the group. The second aspect is the scope of collectivism. This dimension refers to the size of the group within which the collective feeling manifests and whether it spreads also to people with whom an individual has no history of personal relationships. Collectivism that is confined to a narrow group (family, clan) usually hinders economic development, while broad and strong collectivism can foster growth (e.g. East-Asian economies at the end of the XX century). Innovations that accompany economic and social development Γ± such as the expansion of markets, the advances in transport and communications, and the increased educational opportunities in turn affect the strength and scope of collectivism. The influence of individualism-collectivism on economic development and vice versa is mediated by societal features like social capital, norms, institutions, ability to organise collective action, conformism, democratisation/modernisation, and meritocratic organisations. An in-depth look into the above mechanisms and their effects on subjective well-being can also help answer the unsettling question why a number of quality of life indicators have ceased to move in parallel with economic growth in leading economies in recent years.

The first one concerns the definition and age boundaries of the youth population. It is still actively discussed in the literature and ambiguously solved in research and policy actions. The second problem is related to the measures of youth unemployment, which allow for manipulations through skewed usage of only one deliberately chosen measure or through comparisons of multiple measures with no account of their different content. Directions for a detailed empirical analysis of youth unemployment in Bulgaria are inferred. In the concluding part an alternative ranking of EU-28 countries is suggested based on an aggregate handling of three youth unemployment measures in the age interval 15-29 years. It differs decisively from the popular Eurostat ranking, based only on the youth unemployment rate.

In economics he is best known for his work on uncertainty as a cause for entrepreneurial profit in competitive markets. This is only one of his many contributions that put the market and the price mechanism at center stage. In contrast to many other neoclassical writers, he vehemently criticized the market as a guiding principle to form a society since the market is unethical. Knight considered the economy as a social system and the economic approach as one among many others in social sciences. Knight is a founding father of the Chicago School of Economics. Several of his students became Nobelists.

The social order structure, based on impersonal exchange and rational prudence, differing from any other order in the history of human societies, is derived from a specific set of political and military conditions and world view. The institutional decisions taken as a result thereof enable the contemporary levels of production, trade and economic growth. The applied explanatory approach integrates on the ground of their common features the alternative concepts of this process elaborated by A. Greif, A. Acemoglu and J. Robinson, D. North, J. Wallis and B. Weingast.

According to the author, the long-term existence of the current socio-economic system is threatened by the incompatibility of modern social market relations and technological connections with basic features of human nature. Individuals and their preferences are largely products of society and social influences, and to function properly they require unifying worldview systems. The problem with capitalism and the concept of market-regulated social order, as Thurow sees it, is that they are not unifying, but rather βprocessβ ideologies regarding the efficacy of human exchange. With the ubiquitous spread of individualistic mental models, it is getting harder to formulate concepts of common good or collective goals to which all members of society are expected to contribute. In the absence of a well-functioning collectivistic social organization, however, everyone is motivated to "free ride", i.e., to reap the benefits provided by others at an earlier historical stage without investing own efforts in maintaining the system that made these benefits possible.

This article analyses the social factors for the perceived human happiness in the framework of th... more This article analyses the social factors for the perceived human happiness in the framework of the modern research field of happiness economics. The impact of rising expectations on subjective well-being, the role of the social status competition and relative income, as well as of socially accepted consumption levels and hedonic adaptation on declared life satisfaction are being explored from the perspective of economic theory. Implications for key economic policy goals are drawn with respect to growth, inequality, procedural fairness and possibilities for upward social mobility.

Alexander Gerschenkron was one of the leading economic historians and development economists of t... more Alexander Gerschenkron was one of the leading economic historians and development economists of the 20th century. His book of essays, Economic Backwardness in Historical Perspective, is one of the most important books ever published in economic history. This text summarizes two of Gerschenkronβs ideas, which have influenced the development theory beyond its originally European contexts: Firstly, the calculation of Sowjet growth rates which were a puzzle in his time. The detected calculation mistakes of the Sowjet economy are nowadays known as the Gerschenkron effect. Secondly, we illustrate some of the aspects of his central theory of economic backwardness for industrialization and catch-up development processes.

He promoted the idea of expanding price theory beyond the boundaries of economics and developed it into a universal model for the analysis of human behaviour, known as the economic approach to human behaviour. His research inspired the Public Choice literature and the Economic Theory of Law. Besides, Stigler made numerous contributions which nowadays are integral parts of economic theory. In this essay we summarize some of Stiglerβs outstanding contributions, particularly his work on information economics and the economic theory of regulation.

Abstract: This article summarizes the main distinguishing characteristics
of the interactions between economic agents in individualistic and collectivist cultures. A brief systematization of the debate in the literature on
the relationship between culture and economic development is proposed
and the productivity for the economic analysis of a good knowledge of the
peculiarities of national cultures is substantiated. The review necessarily
includes evidence and arguments for the existence of mechanisms
through which deep aspects of culture influence economic performance,
e.g., through the formation of beliefs and preferences β as demonstrated
by the effects of social capital. Some of the apparent contradictions in the
hypotheses presented can be resolved by considering the scope of the
group to which the collective identity and perceived shared responsibilities extend. This leads to the main conclusion of the analysis that the kind
of collectivism that hinders economic development usually consists in
loyalty to a narrow social group

This social organization based on impersonal exchange and rational calculation, differing from any other social order in the history of human societies, is rooted in a specific set of political, military, and world-view preconditions. The resulting institutional forms made possible the contemporary levels of production, trade and economic growth. An explanatory approach is used that integrates - on the ground of their common features - the alternative concepts of this process in the research work by Π. Greif, Π. Acemoglu, J. Robinson, D. This article gives an overview of the life and work of Bulgarian economist Georgi Danailov in the... more This article gives an overview of the life and work of Bulgarian economist Georgi Danailov in the beginning of the 20th century. Studied consequently in Moscow, Berlin, Munich and Vienna under such influential scholars of his time as Chuprov, Yanzhulov, Schmoller, Sombart and Brentano, Danailov became one of the first professors of political economy at the βSt. Kliment Ohridskiβ University of Sofia, established and presided over the respective chair and was among the founding fathers of Bulgarian statistics, demographics and economic history. His textbooks in the above disciplines were extensively used until World War II. A summary is given of Danailovβs major work βBasic principles of the Political Economyβ (1906 and 1934) in which he tried to combine the main ideas of German historical school and Russian legal Marxism with classical economic theory. Social institutions are in the center of his analysis making him one of the forerunners of institutional thought in Bulgaria

Abstract. John Rogers Commons (1862-1945) was a prominent representative of
American institutionalism in the early decades of the 20th century. As a political
economist and sociologist, he developed an institutional approach, defining institutions
as collective actions which take place within given norms such as law, habits, and
customs. Additionally, he introduced the transaction as the smallest unit of
interaction in economic theory. Commons' studies of the labour market, the role of
law, and his social policy work in legislation made him one of the most influential
proponents of old institutional economics.

Abstract: Elinor Ostrom changed the way of thinking about common-pool resources in economics. She provided an institutional analysis that shows how groups can find solutions to complex problems for collective goods. Ostrom showed that collective action can work among rational individuals. She and her husband Vincent objected privatization, nationalization, and centralized government for governing the commons. Instead, they promoted polycentric governance as a solution for many common-pool resources. Her approach is known as the Bloomington School of Political Economy, a thriving direction in Public Choice Theory.

Abstract: This article summarizes the main distinguishing characteristics
of the interactions between economic agents in individualistic and collectivist cultures. A brief systematization of the debate in the literature on
the relationship between culture and economic development is proposed
and the productivity for the economic analysis of a good knowledge of the
peculiarities of national cultures is substantiated. The review necessarily
includes evidence and arguments for the existence of mechanisms
through which deep aspects of culture influence economic performance,
e.g., through the formation of beliefs and preferences β as demonstrated
by the effects of social capital. Some of the apparent contradictions in the
hypotheses presented can be resolved by considering the scope of the
group to which the collective identity and perceived shared responsibilities extend. This leads to the main conclusion of the analysis that the kind
of collectivism that hinders economic development usually consists in
loyalty to a narrow social group
