Universität Passau, Lehrstuhl für Soziologie mit Schwerpunkt Techniksoziologie und nachhaltige Entwicklung, Research Fellow / PhD Candidate
After working as production manager in the film industry for quite some years I became a social scientist – the other way around than many of my colleagues from back then 🎬😉.
🎓 From 2016-2020, I studied the Studium Individuale at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and this since 2018 as a scholarship holder of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation.
Since 2021, I am a PhD student at the Chair for Sociology of Technology and Sustainable Development at the University of Passau and a scholarship holder in the PhD program Dimensions of Care of the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst. Since February 2022, I am employed as a research assistant at the chair.
📚 Already since my undergraduate studies I contributed to various conferences as well as publications and edited a volume on "Mensch und Welt im Zeichen der Digitalisierung" with Anna Henkel et al. In March 2022, I published my first monograph entitled: "Beieinander an getrennten Orten. Bodily Interaction in Videoconferencing."
🗂️ Besides the "Philosophical Anthropology" of Helmuth Plessner, the "New Phenomenology" of Hermann Schmitz is increasingly formative for my sociological analyses of diverse fields of digitalization such as: (social) robotics, cyborgs, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, digital work and video conferencing. 🤖👥

Despite digital mediation and physical distance, there are perceptions of closeness or shared atmospheres in video conferences. Such interactions can be theoretically deduced and empirically investigated with an expanded neo-phenomenological sociology in line with Hermann Schmitz. A grounded theory approach with interviews as the central data source allows for analysis of the opportunities and limits of this togetherness in physically separate places. Video conferences show that in digital communication it is not only technology that enables interactions, but that it is the passionate construction work of the participants that can create ‘Leiberspace’ (a sphere in which the proximity of another body is felt) in order for them to come closer to each other during digital mediation.
