Der Transport von Lasten und Menschen kann als einer der wichtigsten Eckpfeiler solcher Austauschsysteme gesehen werden. Daher dürften die Suche nach Transportmöglichkeiten und die Entwicklung geeigneter Vehikel in der menschlichen Gedankenwelt seit jeher fest verankert sein. Die hier vorliegenden Beiträge basieren auf den Vorträgen der Tagung "Transporte, Transportwege und Transportstrukturen" der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Bronzezeit und des Sonderforschungsbereiches 1070 RessourcenKulturen. Sie fassen im archäologischen Befund der Bronzezeit vorhandene Evidenzen zu Transportwegen und -fahrzeugen sowie Aussagen zu Infrastruktur nicht nur zusammen, sondern ergänzen diese um zahlreiche wissenswerte Aspekte. Was können diese Befunde über die Transportvehikel und ihre Bedeutung aussagen? Welche Eigenschaften wiesen diese auf? Handelt es sich bei den Fundstücken um abgenutzte oder mutwillig zerstörte Fahrzeuge bzw. Teile von solchen? Welche Implikationen auf technologischer und sozialer Ebene lassen sich mit den Befunden verbinden? Wie muss man sich die bronzezeitliche Infrastruktur in unterschiedlichen Regionen vorstellen? Inwiefern bildeten Verkehrswege und Austausch eine Ressource? Der detaillierten Beantwortung dieser Fragen ist dieser Band gewidmet, woraus eine übergreifende Zusammenschau von Funden, Befunden und Theorien entstanden ist.

Metallic décor is found in many different regions and has sparked a lot of interest, in particula... more Metallic décor is found in many different regions and has sparked a lot of interest, in particular regarding technological questions. Although much has been written about pottery with metal applications, the different techniques and ways of ornamentation in europe have never been related to each other. Besides, the origin of the custom and potential motivations behind it is barely discussed. The same is true about the relations between distant areas with metal-decorated pottery. This paper discusses the distribution and meaning of different types of metal decoration on ceramic and wooden vessels, with special regard to the 'rivet-like' décor made of round bronze metal sheets. The finds enable us at least to reconstruct certain aspects of this custom. technical and stylistic analyses point once more to wide-ranging connections between northern europe and the carpathian Basin. it seems that the origin of the metal application might lay in northern europe.

The emergence of bronze tools in deposits and graves in Bronze Age Europe has for a long time bee... more The emergence of bronze tools in deposits and graves in Bronze Age Europe has for a long time been associated with craftsmen. The deposited tools belong especially to the toolkits of metalworkers and are therefore seen as indicators for the participation of metalworkers in events such as the depositing of bronzes. A closer look at the material shows however that the number of deposited tools in Bronze Age hoards is less than 3%. Most tools are multifunctional and are used for many different crafting activities. In contrast, there are only a few tools with a specific function. A functional analysis of tools in the Carpathian Basin, Central Europe, and southern Scandinavia could be an indication of the social status of craftsmen. The connection between artisans suggests that an in-depth study would further our understanding of their function and status, the crafting sphere they belonged to, and the materials they used. This study deals with questions about the occurrence and treatment of tools in deposits and graves. Furthermore, the handling of tools and their significance for Bronze Age craftsmen and their societies will be discussed.

We concentrate on raw materials of known origin ('sourced finds'). Network analysis of tools and artificial intelligence methods are used to analyse the combined data sets. We invite broad collaboration on bimodal exchange networks.

Freshwater shells appear repeatedly in animal bone assemblages at Late Bronze Age and Early Iron ... more Freshwater shells appear repeatedly in animal bone assemblages at Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age inland settlements, especially in the Polish and north-eastern German lowlands. This article discusses the first results from a recent find of several hundred freshwater mussels from the settlement of Lanke in the north German Barnim district. Its focus is shellfish consumption in this local Late Bronze Age community and the meaning of similar finds in a broader context.

The results of this research will be presented and discussed during four half-day sessions on geology and ore deposits, metallurgy and archaeology. In addition, there will be a welcome meeting on Wednesday evening, 14 March, a symposium dinner on Friday evening, 16 March, and the option for a tour through the Old City of Heidelberg on Saturday, 17 March 2018.
