It creates coherence in the incoherent, provides meaning to the inessential, a lucid figure of thought to the inscrutable, motivation to the unintended. Narrative concepts gain particular importance for the self-assurance and identity of communities when negotiating conflict-laden constellations, for example in the realm of war. The paper is dedicated to contemporary historical and cosmological interpretations of celestial signs during the Thirty Years' War from the perspective of Gebhard Himsel's (1603 Salzwedel? - 1676 Reval) narrative-critical Cometologia.

Dietrich Huschenbett (1985, 31) lists 385 texts for the period from 1320 to 1500 alone, 124 of which were in German. The uniformity of the contents and processes of these journeys made this corpus of texts appear sufficiently homogeneous to address questions about changes in worldview and world experience to the texts in a diachronic view and thus illustrate a path of secularization that led from Konrad von Megenberg's "Book of Nature" to Sebastian Franck's "Cosmographia", for example. Beyond such a one-dimensional perspective of progression, each individual text nevertheless remains a witness to its own cultural prefiguration of perception and genre-traditional text constitution. The example of the Styrian Franciscan monk Gabriel von Rattenberg's journey to Jerusalem (1527) will be used to show that very specific contexts also have an impact on the meaning and form of the travelogues.
