Benno Werlen
Prof. Dr. Benno Werlen (*1952) is the founder and holder of the UNESCO Chair on Global Understanding for Sustainability at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, a fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science, as well as of the Max Weber Institute Erfurt and a member of the Academia Europaea. After accomplishing a first university degree in German and French literature in 1976, he studied geography, sociology, cultural anthropology and economy at the Université de Fribourg (Switzerland) from where he also got his PhD from the faculty of philosophy and the humanities in 1986. The Habilitation he got from the faculty of mathematics and natural sciences of the university of Zurich in 1994. As guest professor he was working at the universities of Salzburg, Jena, Geneva and Nijmegen as well as at the Swiss Federal Technical Institute of Technology Zürich (ETH). As visiting scholar he worked at the universities of Cambridge and the London School of Economics. From 1997 to 2018 he held the chair of social geography at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. He was a long time Panel Member of the European Research Council (Brussels) as well as the French Research Agency (ANR). As the initiator and the Executive Director of the IGU-Initiative for an ‘International UN-Year of Global Understanding', Chair of the IGU-Commission ‘Cultural Approach in Geography’ (2004-2016) and 'Global Understanding' he engaged substantively in international science cooperation and global implementation. These activities are based on the approach of Action Centered geography that he established with his theoretical work. As initiator and chair of The Jena Declaration he is engaging in the development an implementation of a cultural approach to to sustainability programs and policies in cooperation with The Club of Rome, the World Academy of Art & Science as well as the International Council for Philosophy and the Human Sciences (CIPSH) and many others.

Mit der sozialtheoretischen Wende der Geographie und dem spatial turn der Sozialwissenschaften hat sich eine interdisziplinäre Konstellation der Erarbeitung des Verhältnis von Raum und Gesellschaft ergeben, wie sie noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten nicht vorstellbar war. Mit der handlungszentrierten Perspektive der Sozialgeographie alltäglicher Regionalisierungen hat Benno Werlen eine Fachkonzeption entwickelt, die über die Grenzen der Geographie breite Aufmerksamkeit erreicht hat.
Der erste Band von „Gesellschaftliche Räumlichkeiten“ gibt einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Dimensionen dieser Neupositionierung. Die erste Ortsbestimmung ist der fachhistorische Einbettung gewidmet, die zweite dem methodologischen und ontologischen Kontext. Das letzte Kapitel entfaltet die verschiedenen Dimensionen von Werlens Konzeption einer handlungs- und praxiszentrierten geographischen Welterschließung.
Band 2 zeichnet die Grundfigur der „Konstitution räumlicher Verhältnisse“ nach und führt vor, wie diese als je spezifische Form des alltäglichen Geographie-Machens in der kulturellen, politischen, sozialen und ökologischen Dimension sozialer Praxis konzeptualisiert werden kann. Die soziale Praxis mit ihren räumlichen Bezügen wird dabei als geographische Praxis interpretiert und zum Bezugspunkt einer sozial- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Forschungsperspektive gemacht.

Es handelt sich um einen richtungsweisenden Klassiker der deutschsprachigen Humangeographie, der handlungstheoretische Ansätze für ein konstruktivistisches Raumverständnis fruchtbar macht, und gleichzeitig in den breiteren Kontext der Disziplingeschichte einbettet.
Die jüngere Auseinandersetzung mit dem fortschreitenden Prozess der Globalisierung lokaler Bedingungen des Handelns macht die Schwächen traditioneller wissenschaftlicher Perspektiven immer klarer deutlich. Weder das traditionelle geographische Weltbild noch das bisher dominante soziologische Gesellschaftsverständnis sind für die verstehende Durchdringung dieser neuen raum-zeitlichen Konstellation alltäglicher Lebenszusammenhänge geeignet. Vor dem Hintergrund der Darstellung des traditionellen geographischen Weltbildes und der jüngeren Versuche, dieses zu reformieren, wird in diesem Band eine neues Verständnis von Regionalisierung als Form der Welt-Bindung entwickelt.
Globalisierung wird in diesem Zusammenhang als Ausdruck spezifischer Formen geographischer Praktiken thematisiert. Diese Praktiken unterscheiden sich in entscheidendem Maße von jenen, welche der geographischen Produktion regionaler oder nationalstaatlicher Wirklichkeiten zugrunde lagen. Die bisher primär territorial konzipierten Bezüge von Ökonomie, Gesellschaft und Kultur driften mit fortschreitender Entankerung immer stärker auseinander. Die Frage, wie diese Wirklichkeitsbereiche künftig gegenseitig aufeinander abgestimmt werden können, bildet eine der brennenden Fragen der näheren Zukunft. Die sozialwissenschaftliche Geographie ist aufgefordert, zu deren Beantwortung diskussionswürdige Vorschläge zu unterbreiten. The more recent examination of the ongoing process of globalization of local conditions of action makes the weaknesses of traditional scientific perspectives increasingly clear. Neither the traditional geographical view of the world nor the so far dominant sociological understanding of society are suitable for an understanding penetration of this new spatio-temporal constellation of everyday life contexts. Against the background of the presentation of the traditional geographical worldview and recent attempts to reform it, this volume develops a new understanding of regionalization as a form of world-binding.
Globalization is thematized in this context as an expression of specific forms of geographical practices. These practices differ decisively from those that have underpinned the geographical production of regional or nation-state realities. The previously primarily territorially conceived references of economy, society and culture are increasingly drifting apart with progressive de-anchoring. The question of how these areas of reality can be mutually coordinated in the future is one of the burning issues of the near future. Social-scientific geography is called upon to submit proposals worthy of discussion to answer these questions. The subject-centered geographical perspective developed here opens a new view on these interrelations.

What is space? And why are questions of space important to social theory? Society, Action and Space is the first English translation of a book which has been widely recognized in Europe as a major contribution to the interface between geography and social theory. Benno Werlen focuses on the issues which are at the heart of the most important debates in human and social geography today. One of the most significant recent developments in social analysis has been the increasing interchange among geographers, sociologists, anthropologists and social philosophers concerning "the spatial." This debate involves the work of Giddens, Foucault, Bourdieu, Lefebvre, Harvey, Gregory, Soja, and many others. From these new developments a whole series of new forms and empirical work, as well as theoretical innovations, have come into being. Spatial considerations are no longer confined to the realm of geography, but are now seen as fundamental to all forms of social theorizing, especially under conditions of late modernity and globalization. Society, Action and Space links discussions in the philosophy of social science with theories of action which have direct relevance to concepts of space.
