Decision making about socioscientific issues is an important aspect of modern science education worldwide. Among the many topics that represent socioscientific issues, issues relating to the sustainable development of our environment are one crucial topic. However, difficulties exist with respect to the assessment of teaching outcomes related to these issues. This paper presents results from two quantitative studies that were conducted to develop a test instrument that measures students' use of decision-making strategies in situations relating to sustainable development. Data were analyzed using the Rasch partial credit model. Analyses concerning reliability and validity showed that the developed instrument provides an adequate measure of students' use of decision-making strategies. Analyses indicated that the test instrument can be used among different age groups and that decision-making competence increases with respect to years of education. Most elaborate strategies were characterized by the use of trade-offs, the ability to weigh decision criteria, and the ability to reflect on the structure of decision-making processes. In contrast, baselevel strategies were characterized by the use of cutoffs and an absence of elaborate metareflection. Land use change, natural resource use and climate change are challenging Sustainable Development issues (SDGs 13–15). Fostering the competencies to deal with such issues is one core task for current educational endeavors. Among these competencies, decision-making competencies are central. In detail, we investigate how learners evaluate alternative decision-making options to improve existing competence models. We exemplify our competence modelling approach using the designation of a Marine Protected Area. The cross-sectional sample consists of secondary school students and student teachers (N = 760). Facherubergreifender Unterricht in den Naturwissenschaften ist an vielen Schulen eine Realitat, die mit gesteigerten fachlichen, organisatorischen und didaktischen Anforderungen an Lehrkrafte verbunden ist. Bisher berucksichtigt die erste Phase der gymnasialen Lehramtsausbildung dies nur unzureichend, da primar fur die Unterrichtsfacher Biologie, Chemie und Physik ausgebildet wird. Uber das Schlozer Programm Lehrerbildung wird an der Universitat Gottingen ein Zusatzangebot zur Qualifizierung zum facherubergreifenden Unterrichten von Naturwissenschaften geschaffen. Das entsprechende Zertifikat umfasst einen Studienumfang von 16 ECTS. Fur eine Teilnahme am Zertifikatsprogramm ist das Studium einer Naturwissenschaft erforderlich. Germany s educational system has experienced a radical change over the last few years. One major reason for this change were high school students mediocre results in the PISA studies. One reaction to these results was the development and implementation of National Educational Standards for most school subjects. For biology education, four central competence areas were defined: scientific knowledge, scientific inquiry, communication and decision making competence with respect to issues of applied science (KMK, 2004). The implementation of decision making competence into the biology classroom still faces many difficulties. Ziel des Artikels ist die Herleitung eines Rahmenkonzeptes der Bewertungskompetenz als Basis fur die Modellierung der Teilkompetenz „Generieren und Reflektieren von Sachinformationen“. In diesem Artikel geht es primar um eine theoretische Fundierung und damit verbunden um einen ersten empirischen Zugang zur Erfassung dieser Teilkompetenz. Konkret zeigt der vorliegende Artikel auf, wie offene Aufgaben angelegt sein sollten, um herauszufinden, ob Schuler/innen a) die Verbindungen von Okologie, Okonomie und Sozialem erkennen, b) Handlungsoptionen auf dieser Basis entwickeln und c) Handlungsoptionen im Hinblick auf ihre Tragfahigkeit beurteilen. Er stellt damit ein Rahmenkonzept fur die Aufgabenentwicklung und Aufgabenanalyse fur eine zukunftige Modellierung und Testentwicklung fur die Teilkompetenz „Generieren und Reflektieren von Sachinformationen“ bereit. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of cooperative training strategies to enhance students' socioscientific decision making as well as their metacognitive skills in the science classroom. Socioscientific decision making refers to both “describing socioscientific issues” as well as “developing and evaluating solutions” to socioscientific issues. We investigated two cooperative training strategies which differed with respect to embedded metacognitive instructions that were developed on the basis of the IMPROVE method. Participants were 360 senior high school students who studied either in a cooperative learning setting (COOP), a cooperative learning setting with embedded metacognitive questions (COOP+META), or a nontreatment control group. Kompetenzdiagnostik kann Lehr-Lernprozesse unterstützen. Sie bezieht sich auf die Individual-, Klassen-, Schul-oder Länderebene und verfolgt damit jeweils spezifische Zwecke: So dienen Large-Scale-Assessments dem Bildungsmonitoring, während Assessments auf Individualebene entscheidend für persönliche Bildungswege sein können. In der Regel erfolgt Kompetenzdiagnostik mit Messmodellen der Item-Response-Theorie (IRT). Dies ist ein Grund, warum das Potenzial von Kompetenzdiagnostik für Feedback und individuelle Förderung bislang kaum ausgeschöpft wird. Lehrkräften fällt es vielfach schwer, Befunde aus IRT-Modellierungen zu interpretieren und für die Gestaltung von Lehr-Lernprozessen zu nutzen. Es ist daher ratsam, Lehrkräfte bei der Anwendung von Wissen aus Assessments für den Unterricht zu begleiten. Zudem sollte es Ziel sein, Unterricht und Kompetenzdiagnostik systematischer aufeinander zu beziehen. Kompetenzmodelle sollten die gemeinsame Referenz für das Unterrichten sowie für formatives und summatives Assessment sein. Prozessbegleitendes, formatives Assessment liefert eine Basis für kriteriales Feedback und kann dazu beitragen, die auf Systemebene definierten Standards in den Unterricht zu tragen. Dennoch bedarf es weiterer Forschung zur Kompetenzdiagnostik, deren Kommunikation und Einbeziehung für die Gestaltung von Lehr-Lernprozessen.

In this paper, we trace selected strands of the German path to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). We start by addressing pre-ESD research, and move to the concept of Gestaltungskompetenz, the core concept of German ESD. The concept had to be realigned as to become more compatible with international research on learning outcomes (competencies). Compared to its beginnings, the meaning of Gestaltungskompetenz has much advanced, e.g., influenced by German competence research in science education, to which the Göttingen Model for socioscientific reasoning and decision making contributes. The paper presents a new competence dimension on "Evaluating and reflecting solutions quantitatively-economically" for this model. The contribution highlights the integrative and interdisciplinary scope of the educational challenges posed by Sustainable Development.

Integrated science education – the combination of the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics – and its implementation for the German school system is currently being discussed. Various implementations of integrated science curricula exist in the different federal states for students ranging from grades 5 through 10. In Germany, teacher education at the university level and in teacher training centers focuses on the individual subject. Pedagogical content knowledge is taught at university level within the disciplines Biology Education, Chemistry education and Physics Education instead of science. In particular, teacher education programs are organized according to these subjects and do not properly prepare for the demands of integrated science instruction.
