The article examines the partial absence of subtitles in the television series Lost (2004-2010). ... more The article examines the partial absence of subtitles in the television series Lost (2004-2010). The series involves the Koreanspeaking characters Jin-Soo Kwon and Sun-Hwa Kwon, but subtitles of their dialogue are not always provided. This article analyses two scenes of the episodes "…In Translation" and "…And Found", in order to demonstrate how the producers of Lost productively use omissions of subtitles. By leaving out on-screen translations, they generate meaning on an extra-linguistic level and circumvent drawbacks of the problem-fraught technique of subtitling. Schleiermacher's findings on translation practices (1813) demonstrate how complex the act of translating per se is and Gottlieb's identification of subtitling as "diagonal translation" (1994: 104) gives insight into further complications of the commonly used method of subtitling. The article concludes by arguing that the concept of understanding as such is challenged since multiple meanings of '(to) understand' are used in dialogue involving either Jin or Sun.
