As the case for complement in MOGAD requires further solidification, carefully designed controlled clinical trials using complement inhibitors will be instrumental in eventually assessing the contribution of complement to MOGAD disease development and clinical outcomes.

Review of: "On the Meaning of Psychological Concepts: Is There Still a Need for Psychological Concepts in the Empirical Sciences?

This multifaceted analytical paper aims at bridging the gap between philosophy and cognitive neur... more This multifaceted analytical paper aims at bridging the gap between philosophy and cognitive neuroscience. Specifically, the paper addresses the role of psychological concepts in the empirical sciences. The author sets off by asking why psychological concepts could be needed in philosophy when the mainstream of sciences seems to explore only physical phenomena. The author's argument focuses on three major aspects and is substantiated by a good deal of pertinent references. First, the major claim of the author is that people become aware of a mental image or memory through introspection. He states that only external behaviour of subjects and the circumstantial conditions are directly observable, while the minds of other people and their psychological processes and phenomena are not. Although the author concedes that introspection is not suited to reveal how these psychological entities arise or what they are in essence, he posits that researchers reach their insights by comparing what they observed in others with their own experiences. Accordingly, the author suggests that empirical psychologists and cognitive scientists rely on the conscious observation of their own psychological phenomena when, for example, they are judging their perception of other subjects. Second, the author highlights that humans have the concept of introspection because they have the ability to introspect. Also, the author states that the concept of introspection has a meaning and that psychological concepts are meaningful because they refer to existing psychological phenomena. In his view psychological language is necessary to describe psychological phenomena. Moreover, a person becomes aware of the meaning of a psychological concept through introspection that is supposed to result from brain activity. Third, it is emphasized by the author that we believe in the existence of other people's psychological processes because we are aware of our own psychological processes. He explains that this notion will lead to a challenging contradiction, namely that when people refer to the concept of introspection, they are talking about something that is in the world. However, the meaning of the concept of introspection is an internal psychological phenomenon within a person. Accordingly, neither is external behaviour equivalent to the meaning of psychological concepts, nor is the meaning of psychological concepts equivalent to physical brain states. Due to the growing proportion of people over the age of 65 years, there will be an enormous economic challenge for acute stroke care and subsequent rehabilitation. Neuroimaging can provide insight into the pathophysiology of stroke and allow monitoring of brain tissue threatened by ischemia and assessment of the infarct.1,2 For optimal allocation of economic resources, it would be helpful to triage patients with symptomatic stroke into those with potential to make gains from neurorehabilitation and those who may not benefit. Adequate predictors of recovery, however, are yet to be determined. Methods: We trained rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) to make choices between alternatives that di... more Methods: We trained rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) to make choices between alternatives that differed in reward (magnitude and probability) or differed in the costs required to obtain reward (delay, physical effort). We simultaneously recorded the activity of neurons from ACC, OFC, lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) and the striatum while subjects made choices based on these variables. In a second series of studies, we made selective lesions of either the ACC or OFC and assessed preand postoperative performance on both reward-based and social-based decisionmaking tasks. Results: Neurophysiological results revealed decision-making selectivity was most prevalent in ACC, where 84% of neurons encoded decision value for manipulations of either reward or physical cost, followed by OFC (56%) and LPFC (49%). Many ACC neurons (but few OFC or LPFC neurons) also encoded a reward prediction error signal. Selective lesions of either ACC or OFC caused severe, but separable, reward-based decision-making deficits. Notably, deficits on social decision-making tasks were most apparent following ACC damage. Conclusions: These results highlight the importance of the medial frontal cortex, in particular areas of ACC, in representing the value of different types of decisions, suggesting this region may serve as a common valuation system for both reward-based and social-based decisions.

Acute non-traumatic ischemic myelopathy is a devastating condition with a typically poor outcome ... more Acute non-traumatic ischemic myelopathy is a devastating condition with a typically poor outcome occurring in adults, adolescents and even children [1-3]. The acute onset of paraplegia and sensory loss are suggestive of spinal ischemia with little recovery potential [1, 4, 5]. Due to the lack of sufficient data there are no standardized guidelines regarding the acute treatment of spinal ischemia. While intravenous thrombolysis is a well established and effective treatment in cerebral ischemia, its efficacy in spinal cord ischemia has not yet been proven [5]. We report the case of a young female patient with acute spinal cord ischemia in whom treatment with systemic thrombolysis lead to a complete reversal of paraplegia.

Abstract Measurements of the regional cerebral blood flow with positron emission tomography (PET)... more Abstract Measurements of the regional cerebral blood flow with positron emission tomography (PET) provide a tool to map the human brain structures activated by information processing of motion, sensation, vision and cognition. The visual system has been demonstrated in subhuman primates to consist of a large number of interconnected striate and extrastriate cortical areas subserving different aspects of visual information processing. It is firmly established from animal experiments and PET studies in man that an occipito-temporal pathway is involved in object identification, while an occipitoparietal pathway mediates the appreciation of spatial relationships among objects. Other functions of visual information processing include discrimination and identification of disparity, colour, motion, face identity, and word processing and have been localized by use of PET activation studies in different subregions of the human extrastriate cortex. Further, it was demonstrated that visual information processing in the extrastriate cortical areas is strongly modulated by selective attention to a particular feature. This attentional system appears to be modulated by a distributed network including the cingulate gyrus.

Conclusion: These present results suggest the relation between the FOG and white matter disruption in the ARWMC subjects.

In this article recent evidence from cognitive neuroscience is presented showing that believing i... more In this article recent evidence from cognitive neuroscience is presented showing that believing is a central brain function. It integrates the perception of information from the environment with personal perspective taking ("what does it mean to me?") as the basis for predictive coding of action. Observing that another person becomes injured can make one believe that the pain in the injured person is similar to pain that oneself has experienced previously. This first-person perspective has been called empathy and includes primal beliefs about potentially pain eliciting objects and painful events in the sense of "what does it mean to you?". Furthermore, observing other people to suffer involves the conceptual belief that their condition is aversive and burdensome. Believing in love and peace involves the perspective of "what does it mean to us?". It is argued that contradictory events may cause the sensation of pain and suffering in the afflicted individuals resulting in mutual distrust and eventually disruption of social bonds. In conclusion, beliefs play an important, though long underestimated role in cognitive neuroscience of pain and suffering and more generally for the cultural notions of deities and evil.
