The aim of the present paper is to investigate the influence of the Czech language on Vietnamese ... more The aim of the present paper is to investigate the influence of the Czech language on Vietnamese learners’ pronunciation of English by comparing English pronunciation of Vietnamese students living in Vietnam and 2nd generation Vietnamese immigrants living in the Czech Republic. Data for this research were obtained from questionnaires, which were mailed to three Vietnamese English learners living in North Vietnam and to three Czech-Vietnamese learners living in the Czech Republic. The questionnaires investigated respondents’ view on how they were exposed to English, how much they used English in their daily lives. Furthermore the respondents were asked to send a recording of themselves reading a short text written in English.
This paper consists of two parts – a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part, not only linguistic terms concerning the second language acquisition are clarified, but also related phenomena like bilingualism and multilingualism are explained. Also Vietnamese language is introduced, in particular the Vietnamese sound system and syllabic structure with the emphasis on final consonant clusters, and then final consonants of Czech language are briefly compared to English final consonants.
In the empirical part, results from the research are presented and analysed. The thesis hopes to offer a detailed description of the difference between Vietnamese English speakers living in Vietnam and those living in the Czech Republic.
