Kosmač’s best prosaic works Spring Day, Tantadruj and Ballade on a Trumpet and a Cloud contain a ... more Kosmač’s best prosaic works Spring Day, Tantadruj and Ballade on a Trumpet and a Cloud contain a great number of proper names, in particular, real toponyms from the South‑West of Slovenia, anthroponyms used in the village environment in the 1st half of the 20th century, and nicknames. Based on the analysis of the original texts and Benhart’s translation, we state that, when translating proper names, the translator used mostly transcription (loanwords), less frequently substitution, mainly for hypocorisms, and literal translation for nicknames. This approach maintains, even emphasizes, the atmosphere and color of the Slovenian environment, however, it also deprives readers of the organic elements of the original works
The paper examines two canonised ballad examples from the mid-19th century, namely the Slovak rom... more The paper examines two canonised ballad examples from the mid-19th century, namely the Slovak romantic ballad The Enchanted Fairy in the Váh River and the Strange Janko (1844) by J. Kráľ and the Czech ballad The Watery Man from the collection A Garland of Folk Tales (1856) by K. J. Erben. It puts the question of genre and innovation at the centre of the interpretation and problematises the role of the mythological (in this connection also the treatment of water mythical creatures) and the subjective in the ballad. The paper opens up the possibility of parallel reading and interpretation in the literature classroom offered by Czech and Slovak Romantic poetry in relation to the Slovenian and German literary traditions.
The article addresses specifics in reception of poetry by Petr Bezruč in the Slovenian territory ... more The article addresses specifics in reception of poetry by Petr Bezruč in the Slovenian territory throughout the 20th century. The translations and contemporary literary critical reflection enables us to recognize changing aesthetic criteria from the turn of the century to the sixties. On the basis of philological and stylistic analysis of the original and its translation we tried to specify and define the main characteristics of various translations or translators of the Šlezske pisni into Slovenian and recognize their implications on the interpretation of poems by Petr Bezruč in Slovenian. For our analysis we chose poems, translated by various translators. Our selection thus includes poems Maryčka Magdonova, Ostrava, Rdeči cvet and Kdo na moje mesto. The main translator of Bezruč's poems is Fran Albreht who, in 1919, published with author's permission a translation of the complete collection of the Šlezske pisni. Based on our analysis, his translations show typical preservation of the semantic meaning on one hand, and on the other, frequent literally translation, i.e. incorrect or stylistically inappropriate use of interlanguage homonyms. Prior to Fran Albreht's complete translation of the complete collection some translations were published in periodic publications by poets Alojz Gradnik and Oton Župančič (Albreht included Župančič's translation in his collection). Translations of both feature greater amounts of poetic expression but bigger differences in meaning to the original can not be identified. In both we can find language features which are typical of the period of the creation of translations (year 1911). Translations by poet Tone Pavček and translator Dušan Ludvik from the 1950s are semantically appropriate and at the high artistic level, thus appearing more contemporary due to the use of modern language. Every translator chose a high amount of erotization at translating proper names of persons and places in Silesia that appear regularly in Brezruč's poems. We believe the Slovenian reader can easily overcome hurdles of understanding due to the similar historical experience. At translating Brezruč's dialect expressions translators decided for periodic use of dialect / informal speech that works functional in translations.

Particularly when learning a related language, proximity can be an advantage; on the other hand, negative interference can make the process of learning a new language more difficult for students and teachers. This paper analyses specific cases of linguistic interference between Slovenian and Czech on the basis of an excerpt of Czech texts produced by Slovenian students of Czech.

Dolence’s novel Vampir z Gorjancev (1979), and its translation into Czech (Benhart, 1988). In our abstract we outline and compare the classification of expressive words and phrases in the Czech and Slovenian linguistics, followed by the typology of changes in intensity of expressiveness in the translation as defined by A. Popovič. Examples included demonstrate types of shifts in meaning related to expressiveness contained in the translation.

In doing so, we will only deal with such differences between the two languages that may cause translation issues, erroneous interpretation of the original text or interferences. The selected phenomena will be compared at the morphosyntactic, lexical and wordforming levels. For certain phenomena we will briefly point out the differences in terms of sociolinguistics (social and situational variability of the language) and pragmalinguistics (relation of the linguistic means and their impact on the participants in the communication).

Odločili smo se za časovno obdobje od leta 1945 do sodobnosti, in to ne le zaradi omejenega prostora, ki je na voljo za ta prispevek, temveč tudi zato, ker je leto 1945 v e češkem prostoru razumljeno kot družbenozgodovinska ločnica, ki je nasilno zarezala v kulturno in literarno dogajanje; po drugi svetovni vojni so namreč literarni ustvarjalci in prevajalci zopet vzpostavili kontinuiteto s predvojnim obdobjem. This article focuses on the specifics and perspectives of translating Slovene literature into Czech. The period from 1945 to the present was chosen not only due to limited space but also because the year 1945 marks a natural sociohistorical milestone for the Czech cultural and literary life which, after having been violently disrupted by World War II, began to reinstate its continuity with the prewar period.

V študiji obravnavamo razprave slovaškega prevodoslovca Antona Popoviča s področja teorije prevod... more V študiji obravnavamo razprave slovaškega prevodoslovca Antona Popoviča s področja teorije prevoda. Naš namen je v slovenskem prostoru predstaviti njegove glavne misli o proučevanju prevoda in ovrednotiti njihov pomen. Čeprav nekateri teoretiki prevoda menijo, da je njegova teorija zastarela, poskušamo izpostaviti določena izhodišča njegovih raziskav, ki ostajajo še vedno aktualna, funkcionalna in inspirativna. Osredotočamo se predvsem na tipologijo izraznih premikov, definicijo prevajalskega procesa kot komunikacijskega dejanja in določitev invariantnega jedra prevoda.

Opira se predvsem na razprave literarne teoretičarke in prozaistke Daniele Hodrove (1946), ki se sistematično ukvarja s teorijo romana in poetiko prostora (mesta). Študija Hodrove s področja poetike prostora nam bo služila kot izhodišče pri premisleku o podobi Prage v romanu Prispevek k zgodovini radosti (2014) češke pisateljice Radke Denemarkove (1968).

Podrobneje predstavi kratko pripovedništvo zadnjih tridesetih let, in sicer na primeru proznih del Jana Balabána, čigar kratke zgodbe veljajo za vrhunec sodobne češke literature. Na primeru interpretacije kratke zgodbe Silvester Svinov bomo prikazali posebnosti Balabánovega ustvarjanja in splošne probleme sodobne češke družbe, na katere avtor opozarja v svojih proznih delih.

Prispevek obravnava pesmi češkega pesnika Ivana Martina Jirousa, v katerih se pogosto pojavlja mo... more Prispevek obravnava pesmi češkega pesnika Ivana Martina Jirousa, v katerih se pogosto pojavlja motiv živali, predvsem ptic in žuželk, že od začetka njegovega ustvarjanja v času komunističnih represij v 70. in 80. letih prejšnjega stoletja vse do sodobnih pesmi, izdanih v prvem desetletju 21. stoletja. Za Jirousa je značilno, da je njegovo ustvarjanje neločljivo od njegove življenjske poti. Zato v prispevku najprej strnem njegovo biografijo s poudarkom na družbeno-političnem kontekstu, nato predlagam tudi možnosti vzporedne komparativne interpretacije pesmi z izbranimi zaporniškimi pesmimi Vitomila Zupana za morebitno didaktično uporabo v okviru pouka književnosti na srednješolski ravni. V zadnjem delu se osredotočam na interpretacijo izbranih sodobnih Jirousovih pesmi z vidika motiva živali. 1
Prva svetovna vojna in družbene, celo državotvorne spremembe, ki jih je povzročila, so predstavlj... more Prva svetovna vojna in družbene, celo državotvorne spremembe, ki jih je povzročila, so predstavljale močan impulz za češke in slovaške literarne ustvarjalce dvajsetih in tridesetih letih v smislu izrazite zvrstne pestrosti, celo sinkretizma. Prispevek obravnava refleksijo prve vojne na primeru kratke proze češkega avtorja Fráňe Šrámka in slovaškega romana Mila Urbana. Sopostavlja nekatere prepoznavne slogovne in kompozicijske postopke (kot denimo lirizacija), ki omogočajo večjo mero stilizacije. Inovativni postopki v prozi, prepoznavni tudi v poeziji in drami, pričajo o spetosti s sočasnimi evropskimi avantgardnimi smermi, predvsem ekspresionizmom; nič manj pomembni pa niso impresionistični impulzi ter filozofija vitalizma.

Diskuse o vhodnosti zařazovat do výuky češtiny pro cizince také jevy z jiných variet národního ja... more Diskuse o vhodnosti zařazovat do výuky češtiny pro cizince také jevy z jiných variet národního jazyka, než je jazyk spisovný, a vkládat je do učebnic, je v dnešní době velmi živá. 1 Všichni autoři, kteří se k tomuto tématu vyjadřovali, se shodují v tom, že je třeba s jinými útvary češtiny studenty -cizince seznamovat, a mít tedy k dispozici adekvátní učební materiály. Otázkou však nadále zůstává, kterou z variet češtiny do výuky zařadit, popř. které variety, a v jaké míře o ní, resp. o nich, studenty informovat a na které úrovni pokročilosti zahájit výuku různých jevů jiných útvarů češtiny. Cílem tohoto příspěvku je analyzovat v současnosti nejpoužívanější učebnice češtiny pro cizince z tohoto pohledu: zda se v nich vyskytují prvky jiných útvarů národního jazyka, v jaké míře se tyto prvky objevují a na kterých jazykových rovinách. Omezíme se -vzhledem k složitosti a šíři naznačené problematiky -na učebnice pro začátečníky, a to rovněž z toho důvodu, abychom zjistili, v jaké fázi znalosti cizího jazyka jsou doposud jiné útvary češtiny do výuky cizinců zařazovány.
Summary In this paper, I focused on the translation work by František Benhart which, due to its e... more Summary In this paper, I focused on the translation work by František Benhart which, due to its extensiveness, was of crucial importance to the reception of Slovenian literature in the Czech cultural environment of the second half of the 20th century. The aim of this study is the linguistic analysis of the literary translations of selected literary works of the canon of Slovenian literature into Czech. Translation can be considered to be a cultural transposition, i. e. a transfer of the text and cultural environment from the source language into the text and cultural environment of the target language. In the analyses, I focused on some partial issues that either dominated in the particular text (expressivity, phraseology, idiomatic or proper names) or occurred across the texts analysed (realia) and in this context, I searched for his specific translation solutions. I also examined short excerpts of the original text and its translated counterpart looking for the presence of stylist...

It provides an overview of literary production in the Czech and Slovak cultural spheres from their common beginnings in the 9th century as a legacy of the Old Slavonic period to the modern period at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The textbook is primarily intended for students. It presents a fundamental study material and a selection of literary texts at the initial stage of the study of Czech and Slovak philology. At the same time, it will be in order to make it available in Slovene, it will be a compulsory study material for the course Czech and Slovak Literature, which is intended for students of Slovene Studies, Comparative Literature and others.

Diskuse o vhodnosti zařazovat do výuky češtiny pro cizince také jevy z jiných variet národního ja... more Diskuse o vhodnosti zařazovat do výuky češtiny pro cizince také jevy z jiných variet národního jazyka, než je jazyk spisovný, a vkládat je do učebnic, je v dnešní době velmi živá. 1 Všichni autoři, kteří se k tomuto tématu vyjadřovali, se shodují v tom, že je třeba s jinými útvary češtiny studenty -cizince seznamovat, a mít tedy k dispozici adekvátní učební materiály. Otázkou však nadále zůstává, kterou z variet češtiny do výuky zařadit, popř. které variety, a v jaké míře o ní, resp. o nich, studenty informovat a na které úrovni pokročilosti zahájit výuku různých jevů jiných útvarů češtiny. Cílem tohoto příspěvku je analyzovat v současnosti nejpoužívanější učebnice češtiny pro cizince z tohoto pohledu: zda se v nich vyskytují prvky jiných útvarů národního jazyka, v jaké míře se tyto prvky objevují a na kterých jazykových rovinách. Omezíme se -vzhledem k složitosti a šíři naznačené problematiky -na učebnice pro začátečníky, a to rovněž z toho důvodu, abychom zjistili, v jaké fázi znalosti cizího jazyka jsou doposud jiné útvary češtiny do výuky cizinců zařazovány.
Summary In this paper, I focused on the translation work by František Benhart which, due to its e... more Summary In this paper, I focused on the translation work by František Benhart which, due to its extensiveness, was of crucial importance to the reception of Slovenian literature in the Czech cultural environment of the second half of the 20th century. The aim of this study is the linguistic analysis of the literary translations of selected literary works of the canon of Slovenian literature into Czech. Translation can be considered to be a cultural transposition, i. e. a transfer of the text and cultural environment from the source language into the text and cultural environment of the target language. In the analyses, I focused on some partial issues that either dominated in the particular text (expressivity, phraseology, idiomatic or proper names) or occurred across the texts analysed (realia) and in this context, I searched for his specific translation solutions. From the Danube to the Vltava: a survey of Czech and Slovak literature is a higher education text... more From the Danube to the Vltava: a survey of Czech and Slovak literature is a higher education textbook and also an anthology. It provides an overview of literary production in the Czech and Slovak cultural spheres from their common beginnings in the 9th century as a legacy of the Old Slavonic period to the modern period at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The textbook is primarily intended for students. It presents a fundamental study material and a selection of literary texts at the initial stage of the study of Czech and Slovak philology. At the same time, it will be in order to make it available in Slovene, it will be a compulsory study material for the course Czech and Slovak Literature, which is intended for students of Slovene Studies, Comparative Literature and others.

This article focuses on the specifics and perspectives of translating Slovene literature into Czech. The period from 1945 to the present was chosen not only due to limited space but also because the year 1945 marks a natural sociohistorical milestone for the Czech cultural and literary life which, after having been violently disrupted by World War II, began to reinstate its continuity with the prewar period.
