
Nagesh Kumar
Dr Nagesh Kumar is Director and Head, South and South-West Asia Office, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), based in New Delhi. Previously, he was Director, Macroeconomic Policy and Development Division and Chief Economist of UNESCAP based at its headquarters in Bangkok.
Before joining the United Nations in 2009, Dr. Kumar was Director-General of the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), a New Delhi based policy think-tank of the Government of India during 2002-09. He has also served on the faculty of the UNU-MERIT in Maastricht, the Netherlands (1993-1998).
Dr Kumar has served on the boards of the Export-Import Bank of India, the International Centre for Trade & Sustainable Development (ICTSD), Geneva; the South Asia Centre for Policy Studies (SACEPS), Kathmandu, among other institutions. He has served as consultant to the World Bank, ADB, UNCTAD, UNIDO, UN-DESA, the Commonwealth Secretariat, among others. He has chaired regional track-II study groups on trade in services in South Asia and on infrastructure development in East Asia. He has also served on several intergovernmental committees examining the feasibilities of comprehensive economic partnerships between India and the East Asian countries and between the members of the East Asia Summit.
A PhD from the Delhi School of Economics (1988), Dr Kumar is recipient of the Exim Bank of India's first International Trade Research Award (1989) and the Global Development Network’s Research Medal (2000). Dr. Kumar has conducted extensive research on aspects of development economics especially its international dimensions, resulting in the publication of 19 books and over 100 peer-reviewed papers. His recent books include Indian Economy 2008-9: Challenges of Sustaining Dynamism in the Context of Global Financial Crisis (India International Centre 2009), Asia’s New Regionalism and Global Role (Singapore: ISEAS, 2008), International Infrastructure Development in Asia (Tokyo: ERIA/ IDE/JETRO, 2008), International Competitiveness and Knowledge-based Industries in India (Oxford Univ. Press. 2007), Globalization and the Quality of Foreign Direct Investment (Oxford University Press 2002). He co-founded South Asia Economic Journal (Sage Publications) in 2000 and was its editor for the first ten years.
