The influences of age on serum protein values were investigated in juvenile Chinese goose. Statistical comparisons were made for differences in values among different ages. These samples were used to determine baseline data on serum total protein, albumin, globulins and albumin/globulin ratio. Significant variations were not observed in the analyses in relation to the age of birds for serum total protein, albumin and globulins. The albumin/globulin ratio showed significant difference among 21 and 49 day-old Chinese geese.

Escherichia coli is the most common bacterial agent isolated from canine pyometra. The frequencies of 24 virulence genes and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) profiles were determined for 23 E. coli isolates from cases of canine pyometra in Brazil. O linfoma é o tumor de tecido hematopoético mais comum nos cães e um dos tumores malignos de maior ocorrência nesta espécie. É um ótimo modelo experimental para estudo devido a sua semelhança com o linfoma não-Hodgkin em humanos. Considerando a importância das alterações decorrentes da evolução desta neoplasia e aquelas ocorridas com o emprego da poliquimioterapia, avaliou-se o leucograma absoluto e a contagem de células CD45 + pela citometria de fluxo, no sangue de 25 cães com linfoma. Foram avaliados no momento do diagnóstico, uma vez por semana, durante as primeiras oito sessões quimioterápicas do protocolo de Madison-Wisconsin, e cujas contagens obtidas em contador automático convencional e por intermédio da citometria de fluxo, foram comparadas. Os resultados obtidos não revelaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre as duas técnicas utilizadas.

Mast cell tumors represent the most common malignant skin tumor in the dog. This review outlines the incidence, etiology and clinical signs of mast cell tumors. Diagnostic tests, staging and treatments are also discussed. Lymphoma is a malignant tumor characterized by cell proliferation of lymphoid origin and corresponds to 90% of all hematopoietic neoplasms of dogs. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been the target of many investigations in oncology due to their potential of down-regulating immune responses, as well as ensuring the maintenance of active mechanisms of tumor suppression. The aims of the present study were to compare the percentage of Tregs in peripheral blood between dogs with multicentric lymphoma and healthy animals, together with the percentage of Tregs in peripheral blood and lymph nodes of dogs with multicentric lymphoma. ASSESSMENT OF HEPATIC HISTOPATHOLOGY AND PERFORMANCE OF LAMBS FED BRACHIARIA BRIZANTHA HAY OR SUGAR CANE Brachiaria spp. are important forages in tropical regions, especially in the Cerrado of Central Brazil. Some Brachiaria species have been described as a cause of hepatic lesions in ruminants. Initially, the disease was attributed to Pithomyces chartarum spores, but recent studies suggest that the steroidal saponins contained in the forage are responsible for intoxication. PERFORMANCE OF CATTLE FED BRACHIARIA BRIZANTHA HAY OR SUGAR CANE Cattle herds from Brazil usually have about 170 million animals and their main food source is Brachiaria pastures. In beef cattle, weight loss or reduction in weight gain may be due to clinical and subclinical hepatic diseases. Saponins present in Brachiaria spp. may be the cause of liver damage. This study assesses 12 eight-month-old Nelore calves fed B. brizantha hay and sugar cane by observation of the performance and weight gain, carcass dressing, and body condition score. They were randomly allocated to one of these two experimental diets: hay group (6 calves fed B. brizantha hay and concentrates), and sugar cane group (6 calves fed sugar cane and concentrates). The weight gain of animals in the second group (44,42kg) was significantly greater (p<0,05) than those in the first group (12,33kg). Carcass dressing and body score was similar in both groups. Furthermore, results revealed a better performance of cows fed B. brizantha hay.

Este estudo teve por objetivo traçar o perfil imunológico, pela marcação imunocitoquímica e quantificação de linfócitos T e B, de bovinos da raça Curraleiro. Para tal, foram utilizados 116 animais entre machos e fêmeas, de diferentes faixas etárias, provenientes de duas propriedades de criação de gado Curraleiro do Estado de Goiás, sendo alocados em grupos conforme a faixa etária, sexo e origem. As amostras de sangue foram colhidas e processadas para a realização da técnica de imunocitoquímica, sendo utilizados os marcadores linfóides espécie-específicos, anti-CD3 (MM1A-BoCD3) e anti-LB (LCTB16A-clone B-B14), para a quantificação de linfócitos T e B, respectivamente. Some species of Brachiaria have been reported to cause hepatogenous photosensitization in ruminants. Initially, the disease was attributed to Pithomyces chartarum fungus, but recent studies suggest that the steroidal saponins present in the grasses have toxic principles responsible for the photosensitization.
