My career started with a PhD at the University of Edinburgh and jobs in several publishing companies. Now I am Professor of Medieval History at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia in Madrid, the most important Distance University in the Spanish language. I have been research fellow in UCLA, Rice University, the Käte Hamburger Kolleg "Dynamics in the History of Religions between Asia and Europe" in the Ruhr-Universität, Bochum (Germany) and the Institute for Advanced Study, associated to the Excellence Cluster "Kulturellen Grundlagen von Integration"in Constance University (Germany). From 2019 to 2021 I will be leading a Gerda Henkel Foundation research project on "Christian Society under Muslim Rule: Canon Collections from Medieval Spain", while being a member of the EU COST Action "Islamic Legacy" (IS-LE).
My main research focus is the relations between Christianity and Islam in the Iberian Peninsula, with an emphasis on issues such as polemics, conversion Mudejars, and the assimilation of Christian communities by Islam in the Early Middle Ages, trying to set the Iberian Peninsula in a broader Mediterranean context. My other focus in Late Medieval Queenship, especially in Castile and Granada.

Bringing together an international team of contributors from different disciplines, this collection addresses the intersection of religion, gender, corporeality and/or sexuality in various Western and Eastern cultures. The book analyses instances when religious meaning is attributed to the human body’s physicality and its mechanics in contrast to imagined or metaphorical bodies. In other cases, it is shown that the body may function either as a vehicle or a hindrance for mystical knowledge. The chapters are arranged chronologically and across religious orientations, to offer a differentiated view on the body from a global perspective.
This collection is an exciting exploration of religion and the human body. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars in religious studies, theology, Islamic studies, South Asian studies, history of religions and gender studies.
De forma puntual o permanente, la movilidad, que llegó a afectar incluso a núcleos familiares completos, ha quedado registrada asimismo en textos producidos por ellos u otros musulmanes, motivada también por otras causas además de las económicas, amén de la legislación encaminada a forzar los desplazamientos masivos de estas comunidades, esgrimidas por los especialistas que han participado en este estudio. Estos se refieren a la peregrinación a La Meca, a los matrimonios en comunidades de diversas ciudades, etc.
Este volumen cuenta con una mezcla de especialistas consagrados y jóvenes investigadores procedentes de disciplinas variadas (historiadores, arqueólogos, filólogos especialistas en árabe, romance y aljamiado), lo que permite conjugar erudición sólida y renovación de las perspectivas desde una metodología pluridisciplinar, capaz de definir tanto las modalidades de esas circulaciones como los contornos de las redes de contacto y la parte real e imaginada de sus representaciones.

Over the last thirty years, some separate geographic and academic areas have been defined in this research field: the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, Central Europe and the Balkans, and Greece and the different islands of the Mediterranean. These different geographical areas have been analysed in isolation and have been further disjointed in a scientific context defined by the separation of disciplines and chronologies.
The creation of this network will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of past relations between Christianity and Islam in the European context through the addressing of three main research problems: otherness, migration and borders. Beyond the strictly academic realm, IS-LE also aims to revive diversity and Euro-Mediterranean relations in education, at a moment when Europe is at a cultural and political crossroads.
This article explores the interaction of legal systems in the context of the mixed religious society of the Iberian Peninsula, and the impact of minority law and its practitioners on social order. The kingdom of Castile is studied in the longue durée, involving more than four centuries of co-existence of Muslims, Jews and Christians, in order to assess the influence of a Muslim population and its law on the transformations taking place in the Christian legal system of the kingdom. This period shows great changes in the development of both Christian royal law and Islamic legal tradition that made a dialogue between them possible, and which produced new forms of codification that responded to the challenges of mixed societies. The influence of Islamic laws and institutions on Castilian royal law is unparalleled in medieval Europe, except Norman Sicily and the Crusader States.

This article studies the evolution and remodelling of the material concerning fast, wine consumption, and meat sacrifices and dealings in several kinds of sources. On one hand, the most remarkable source to appraise the rules followed by Mudejars and Moriscos in Spain during the 15th-16th centuries, the Sunni Breviary written by the alfaqui of Segovia Yça Jabir. This book was not only followed closely by Muslims living under Christian domain, but became later a manual for inquisitors that found its way even to America in the 16th century. To complement this theoretical instruction and the modifications suffered by this material when it was translated for inquisitorial use, I will be looking into fatwas from the same period, Christian records speaking about butcher shops in the different kingdoms of Spain, and Inquisitorial interrogations that expand our knowledge about issues on meat dealing, sacrifice and cooking as markers of identity of the Moriscos.
Omar Patún y Muhammad del Corral partieron de Ávila en otoño de 1491 para hacer la peregrinación a La Meca, lo que constituye uno de los cinco preceptos u obligaciones del creyente musulmán. Las complicaciones y dificultades del viaje hicieron que los castellanos deambularan por tierras de uno y otro lado del Mediterráneo durante más de cuatro años, viviendo experiencias únicas y extraordinarias. A su vuelta, y a su paso por tierras aragonesas, muy probablemente narraron sus aventuras a algunos correligionarios, y alguno de ellos puso por escrito (en lengua castellana y escritura arábiga, lo que se conoce como aljamiado) lo narrado por Patún. Esto explicaría que el manuscrito se encontrara entre los libros de un alfaquí de la villa turolense de Calanda, hoy conservado y custodiado en la Biblioteca de las Cortes de Aragón.
El relato del viaje de Patún y del Corral es un excepcional documento para conocer y analizar nuestro pasado intercultural, en especial el que tiene que ver con el Islam, pero también para comprender y orientar nuestro presente multicultural y plurirreligioso.
Between 1402 and 1414, the activity of the members of a confraternity related to the mosque of Tornerías, in Toledo, was registered by their leaders in Arabic proceedings. These records prove that Arabic was still currently used by Muslims in Castile at the beginning of the 15th century. This is the first Mudejar confraternity known to us. Lacking knowledge about their statutes, the records of their meetings provide interesting clues to their development. This article focuses on the linguistic features of the records, and will describe the confraternity members, functions, and their capacities to manage Toledan Muslims’ alms.

This essay focuses on the role of the shrine of Saint James in Compostela as a catalyst of the relations between England and Castile during the fourteenth and the beginning of the fifteenth centuries, when diplomatic and military contacts were suspended because of the Hundred Years' War.

al trono de su hijo Pedro I, la reina amplió su radio de acción en las relaciones que
estableció con la siguiente generación de mujeres reales: Blanca de Francia, María
de Padilla y Juana Manuel. Como veremos, la protección de la reina se extendió
a varias de ellas en momentos de peligro, y fue contemplada como un posible
refugio por los lados contendientes del conflicto dinástico que siguió a la muerte de
Alfonso XI. Esta aceptación por ambas partes pone en cuestión su participación en
la muerte de la favorita, Leonor de Guzmán.

Order of Calatrava, found thanks to a new catalogue done for the Library of the University of Leipzig. Through that original text, entitled «Rule of how the kights of the Order of Calatrava must pray their hours» we can have a look at the religiousity and liturgy of the Military Order of Calatrava, specifically its knightly members, in a time framework
that we believe should be between the end of the fourteenth century and early fifteenth century. An study on the text and its context, as well as a general approach to the subject of the religiosity of the Military Orders is attached to the edition.
