Aires (UBA), graduating in Anthropological Sciences in 1988. His academic interests from early on... more Aires (UBA), graduating in Anthropological Sciences in 1988. His academic interests from early on were sparked by the Puna of Atacama in the Argentine Province of Catamarca. However, the allures of the place would be more than academic. In Catamarca he met Silvina Del Carmen Ahumada, then an archaeology student, married her, and stayed to share her life over 20 years ago. Together they had four children: Santiago, Ignacio, Francisco, and Valentina. A constant challenge for Alejandro is the critical analysis of the supposed theorems about nature and culture that underlie archaeological narratives. This has led him to have an interest in a number of fields, among them "domestication," "the social appropriation of natural resources," "the ethno-archaeology of shepherds," "the zooarchaeology of llamas and vicunas," "systems of settlement: oases and enclaves," "domesticity," the "uywaña" (the Andean concept of nurture), "environmental politics in indigenous territories," and "territorial wangling." Alejandro Fabio Haber received his doctorate in Anthropological Sciences from the UBA in 1999, under the guidance of Dr. José Antonio Pérez Gollán. His thesis was titled An Archaeology of the Oases of Puna: Domesticity, Interaction, and Identity in Antofalla in the First and Second Millennia BP. In it, he deconstructs the geographical image of the Puna of Atacama as a marginal landscape and incorporates it into the archaeological discourse. This signals the bond between Puna of Atacama landscape's narrative and the successive practices of appropriation of Puna territory by outsiders. This indicates the solidarity between the different scientific disciplines, in this case archaeology, and the colonial progress plan. Apart from this thesis, Alejandro conducted several research projects in the Comunidad Indígena Colla Atacameña de Antofalla (the Atacama Colla Indigenous community of Antofalla). These projects have been embraced by the members of the community to the extent that some of them have been actively involved in research projects by Alejandro and his team. Significantly, they have even been involved as coauthors. The affection and wisdom of the locals from Antofalla has strongly guided Alejandro's academic interpretations. Undoubtedly, the Puna ancestral teachers have left their imprint on his work and his life. Perhaps it is this mutual friendship that warrants the classification of this biography under "Indigenous Archaeologies." With the Colombian anthropologist Cristóbal Gnecco, Alejandro has initiated several archaeological projects that move towards the decolonization of his own discipline and his own work. Historical ecology is a practical framework for studying the management history of landscapes and... more Historical ecology is a practical framework for studying the management history of landscapes and how such knowledge can inform and help envision their durable futures. Combining evidence from the biological and physical sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities, historical ecology employs a broad spectrum of concepts and methods. The study of landscape of southwestern Burgundy (in central France) is an early example of this comprehensive approach to the combined study of human history with that of environments.
Recent, widely recognized changes in the Earth system are, in effect, changes in the coupled huma... more Recent, widely recognized changes in the Earth system are, in effect, changes in the coupled human–environment system. We have entered the Anthropocene, when human activity—along with solar forcing, volcanic activity, precession, and the like—must be considered a component (a ‘driver’) of global environmental change (Crutzen and Stoermer 2000; Levin 1998). The dynamic non-linear system in which we live is not in equilibrium and does not act in a predictable manner (see Fairhead, chapter 16 this volume for further discussion of non-equilibrium ecology). If humankind is to continue to thrive, it is of utmost importance that we identify the ideas and practices that nurture the planet as well as our species. Our best laboratory for this is the past, where long-, medium-, and short-term variables can be identified and their roles evaluated. Perhaps the past is our only laboratory: experimentation requires time we no longer have. Thus the integration of our understanding of human history with that of the Earth system is a timely and urgent task. Archaeologists bring two particularly useful sets of skills to this enterprise: how to collaborate, and how to learn from the past. Archaeology enjoys a long tradition of collaboration with colleagues in both the biophysical sciences and in the humanities to investigate human activity in all planetary environments. Archaeologists work alongside one another in the field, live together in difficult conditions, welcome collaboration with colleagues in other disciplines—and listen to them carefully—and tell compelling stories to an interested public. All are rare skills and precious opportunities. Until recently few practitioners of biophysical, social science, and humanities disciplines had experience in cross-disciplinary collaboration. Many scholars who should be deeply engaged in collaboration to avert disaster (for example, specialists in tropical medicine with their counterparts in land use change) still speak different professional ‘languages’ and have very different traditions of producing information. C. P. Snow, in The Two Cultures (1993 [1959]), was among the first to warn that the very structure of academia was leading to this serious, if unintended, outcome.

HERCULES seeks to empower public and private actors to protect and sustainably manage cultural la... more HERCULES seeks to empower public and private actors to protect and sustainably manage cultural landscapes that possess significant cultural, socio-economic, historical, natural and archaeological value, at a local, national and Pan-European level. The project is funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 603447 and follows the European Landscape Convention’s call for transdisciplinary research and involves all actors with stakes in cultural landscapes of historical and archaeological value. HERCULES brings together 13 partners representing European universities and research institutes, small and medium-sized enterprises and non-governmental organisations, all of whom are experts in landscape science and practice. The overarching goal is to increase understanding of drivers, patterns, and values of European cultural landscapes and to use this knowledge to develop, test, and demonstrate strategies for their protection, management, and planning.
An anarchist archaeology embraces considerations of social inequity as a critique of authoritaria... more An anarchist archaeology embraces considerations of social inequity as a critique of authoritarian forms of power and as a rubric for enabling egalitarian and equitable relationships. An anarchist archaeology insists on an archaeology that is committed to dismantling single hierarchical models of the past, and in that sense, its core incorporates tenets of a decolonized, indigenous, and feminist archaeology, contesting hegemonic narratives of the past. Here we outline principles for an anarchist archaeology that can be applied towards studies of the past, toward archaeologically informed examinations of contemporary societies, and to archaeological practices, including professional ethics.

Celtic fire festivals first came to our attention in 1975, when we noticed a hand-lettered roadsi... more Celtic fire festivals first came to our attention in 1975, when we noticed a hand-lettered roadside poster a few kilometers south of Gueugnon: FEUX CELTI-QUES, BARON, 22 JUIN. Baron is a small village located about 10 km north of Charolles and about 25 km northeast of Digoin. Arriving in Baron the evening of the feux (fires), we saw for the first time what in subsequent seasons would be a familiar summer scene: a bucher, a multitiered arrangement of bundled sticks (fagots) lashed together to form a pyre resembling a gaunt, wooden wedding cake. Atop the pyre was a long wooden pole, to which was attached a carved wooden rooster (coq). Nearby a few strings of lights illuminated tables at which sat a number of people enjoying glasses of Beaujolais and conversations with their friends and neighbors. After nightfall all gathered about as the pyre was lighted; it burst quickly into a glorious bonfire. After the fire had burned for some time the wooden coq itself fell and was consumed.
In this book an important theme, sometimes explicit, other times tacit, has been the dual importa... more In this book an important theme, sometimes explicit, other times tacit, has been the dual importance of sociohisforical and physical structures in the production and reproduction of human societies. Our collective experiences in attempting to understand such activities have convinced us again and again of fhe vital role played by decision-making: the reaching of consensus, the ranking and reranking of priorities at a number of different scales. By refusing fo circumscribe (femporally and spatially) our research area except in the most tentative initial terms (see Chapter 1), we believe that we have avoided the dilemmas between internal and external, between system and environment, often encountered by systems analysts, functionalist ethnographers, certain economic geographers, and their followers. Our explicifly critical, multiscalar approach has allowed us to observe and to begin to understand the dynamics of human organization in east-central France from fhe Iron Age to the present, against a background of heterogeneous landscape and climate (see Chapters 2 and 6).

If the Past Teaches, What Does the Future Learn? Ancient Urban Regions and the Durable Future is ... more If the Past Teaches, What Does the Future Learn? Ancient Urban Regions and the Durable Future is the product of three workshops organized by the Integrated History and Future of People on Earth (IHOPE) and hosted by the US National Science Foundation’s National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) in Maryland, USA. Architects, regional planners, and landscape architects joined archaeologists and other scholars to explore how cities in the past can inform cities of the future. The discussions encompassed ancient urban regions in Ethiopia, the Maya lowlands, Atlantic Europe, and Southern Mesopotamia, along with some modern cities with long histories. Durability, diversity, and flexibility were identified as common factors in analyzing how people adapted to changing circumstances. Long-lived cities, taken together with their regions, offer useful insights for current urban infrastructure and technology; highlight past social, economic and political experiments; and suggest that, in the future, diverse urban forms and flexible management strategies can better match shifting environmental conditions.
