The glossary explores what persists and what remains from the textual, epistemic, aesthetic, and ... more The glossary explores what persists and what remains from the textual, epistemic, aesthetic, and political legacy of "Antigone" at the present historical moment with regard to pursuits of dissent, agonism, democracy, egalitarianism, and revolt. Each lexical entry invokes a single concept related to "Antigone," while questioning conventional assumptions about the tragic and its implications for contemporary critical theory. The entries encourage us to ask whether there can be another way of performing a glossary, beyond definitional finality and cathartic closure.

LA ESFERA DE LO PSÍQUICO n 1880, Josef Breuer, el médico austriaco que coescribió «Estudios sobre la histeria (1893-95)» con Sigmund Freud, empezó a tratar a Bertha Pappenheim -mejor conocida por su seudónimo clínico «Señorita Anna O»-por desórdenes nerviosos. Breuer la describió como una mujer de inteligencia notable. Anna O demostró su ingenio cuando le dijo a su doctor que la técnica que empleaba era una «cura de la palabra» o algo muy parecido a una «limpieza de chimeneas»[2]. En efecto, el psicoanálisis es una «cura de la palabra», aunque, como Freud pronto se dio cuenta, no solamente en términos catárticos o abreactivos, puesto que descubrió que recuperar el material reprimido vía hipnosis, así como comunicárselo al paciente, era insu ciente, los síntomas retornaban; en cambio, si el paciente continuaba las visitas al consultorio médico, lo síntomas disminuían hasta eventualmente desaparecer. Como resultado de esto, si bien el psicoanálisis debe verdaderamente ser pensado como una «cura por medio de la palabra», no se trata de una palabra hablada o escrita, sino más bien de la palabra que escribe en sentido performativo, esto es, la palabra que cura porque su iteración reescribe la historia del paciente cuyo destino funesto estaría determinado. Ta stroj hiperbolicno požene v gibanje življenje, ki pa ni drugega kot ovinek na poti k smrti. Za Freuda življenje v historicnih in evolucijskih terminih pomeni breme, ki ga je treba odživeti. Paradoksno in spekulativno razmerje med Erosom in Thanatosom predstavlja »izvor« dusevnosti kot kompleksnega mehanizma posredovanja med življenjem in smrtjo. Dusevnost kot stroj je tako ustvarjena z namenom sprostitve napetosti (življenja), obenem pa se pokorava se neki drugi težnji, ki jo Freud imenuje nacelo konstantnosti. To nacelo ustvari zalogo energije v obliki spomina, ki se upira ubiranju bližnjic, neposredni smrti ali samomoru. Spomin je tako tisto, kar hrani odloženo sprostitev, kot tudi pot sproscanja prihajajocih napetosti. Tovrsten arhiv tvori varovalo pred smrtjo. These are: the virtuality of the psyche, the idea of the mnemic trace and that of “deferral” (apres-coup). In To Speculate — on “Freud”, it becomes very clear that Derrida’s reflexive and critical exercise does not have only one direction, i.e. at the same time that, from a deconstructive interest, he criticises the metaphysical assumptions of psychoanalysis, Beyond the Pleasure Principle reflects on his philosophical thinking an image of Being as a speculative economy. Based on the Freudian theory of trauma, Judith Butler's theory of subjection and Hannah Arendt's theory of action, I analyze how agency is not a full a priori but rather an a posteriori construction achieved, in a deferred manner, in the story told to another who listens.

Analyzing the Mexican case of collectives of women currently looking for their disappeared relati... more Analyzing the Mexican case of collectives of women currently looking for their disappeared relatives due to an escalation of violence related to the socalled War against Drugs that former president Felipe Calderón (2006–2012) started, this essay develops a new conception of politics grounded not only on rational thought but also on affect. These collectives put forward a materialistic, feminist, and performative mode of politics. Publicly lamenting their losses and literally digging bodies out of Mexican land, these women perform and recover the citizenship that the Mexican state has de facto disavowed of them. The author proposes conceptualizing them as “bad victims” since their taking action does not take away their pain; rather, the public exposure of their lament actually turns them into political agents.

Desde la teoría freudiana del trauma, la de la sujeción de Judith Butler y la de la acción de Hannah Arendt, analizaré cómo la agencia no es un a priori pleno, sino una construcción a posteriori que se logra, retardadamente, en el discurso que se narra para un otro que escucha.
This book considers a promise left unfulfilled in Sigmund Freud’s Beyond the Principle of Pleasur... more This book considers a promise left unfulfilled in Sigmund Freud’s Beyond the Principle of Pleasure. There Freud suggests that he will investigate a psychic tendency that is not subject to the pleasure principle, but in fact for Freud the latter remains sovereign. Following Jacques Derrida, Martínez argues that when the pleasure principle comes into contact with the death drive (a tendency toward aggression or cruelty), the psyche can take detours that, without exceeding the limit of the pleasure principle, can nevertheless defer it. Eros: Beyond the Death Drive reflects on these deviations of the pleasure principle, which Martínez finds both in the political sphere and in intimate relations. Following these erotic paths, Martínez argues that the forces of the death drive can only be resisted if resistance is understood as an ongoing process in which erotic action and the construction of pathways for sublimation are interminable tasks. Con base en la teoría de la acción de Hannah Arendt, la teoría del trauma de Freud y la noción de “deseo de narración” de Adriana Cavarero, propongo que prestar oídos al relato del otro es una obligación ética y una responsabilidad política, pues permite escuchar lo hasta ahora inaudito y construir colectivamente nuevas gramáticas de la escucha para dar lenguaje, espacio y tiempo a la experiencia de la violencia extrema.

En términos teóricos, cuando el mecanismo del aparato psíquico es un proceso de inscripción, la huella mnémica es alterable. Si la huella puede modificarse, la memoria es un fenómeno inmerso en lo que Derrida llama fantología u ontología asediada por “fantasmas” provenientes del pasado y del futuro, y no un archivo de “presentes” ya pasados. La memoria queda entonces en sintonía con la versión derrideana de acontecimiento en tanto sobreviene como repetición en diferencia, esto es, en tanto que toda “nueva” impronta guarda algo del texto psíquico previo no obstante emerge como inauguración. Clínicamente se devela necesario abandonar la búsqueda de un sentido último y originario del discurso del paciente.
