The book reflects on the conditions of Quechua language use in the socio-digital networks Faceboo... more The book reflects on the conditions of Quechua language use in the socio-digital networks Facebook and WhatsApp by young secondary school students from communities in the rural area of Cochabamba. To this end, it emphasises the interweaving of relationships between: a) access to and use of the social-digital networks Facebook and WhatsApp by young students; b) the students perceptions and attitudes towards the Quechua language and its use; and c) their use of the Quechua language on Facebook and WhatsApp.
Focusing on Quechua-Spanish bilingual adolescents and young people, inhabitants of the digital ecosystem where they experience transformations in their socio-cultural, socio-educational and sociolinguistic practices through interactions in their virtual communities, the book seeks to respond to the concern shared by speakers of indigenous languages, language scholars and the general population about the impact of smartphones and socio-digital networks on the validity of indigenous languages, in this case, Quechua.
The socio-ecological perspective marks the approach to the problems addressed in the book. Thus, cyberspace is conceived as a new digital sociolinguistic ecosystem where languages coexist with each other and speakers, especially young people, reproduce the asymmetrical relations between them through their use. Digital ethnography of speech was the basis for the study carried out.

Entre las lenguas abordadas están: aimara (Bolivia), mapuzungun (Chile), nasa yuwe (Colombia), quechua (Bolivia), uru (Bolivia), wounaan (Colombia) y también el castellano. Estos estudios, además, explican las dinámicas territoriales, sociolingüísticas, socioculturales y socioambientales presentes en los diversos contextos, donde se producen y reproducen prácticas lingüísticas y culturales,
y se definen y redefinen permanentemente las identidades indígenas.

Las lenguas indígenas en Bolivia son vulnerables en las redes sociales digitales. A pesar del rec... more Las lenguas indígenas en Bolivia son vulnerables en las redes sociales digitales. A pesar del reconocimiento y la oficialización de las lenguas indígenas, su uso presencial y digital en las interacciones sociales cotidianas se restringe a la población adulta y a ámbitos reducidos e íntimos. Las redes sociales digitales constituyen un nuevo escenario relacional para los jóvenes de origen quechua que experimentan nuevas formas de comunicación vehiculadas por un lenguaje multimodal que expone a la lengua quechua a batallar entre el desplazamiento y la resistencia a la arremetida del castellano y del inglés. A partir de la etnografía digital del habla como método cualitativo que implicó la aplicación de técnicas como la observación digital, la entrevista y la autobiografía lingüística, el artículo muestra cómo los jóvenes escolares de dos provincias del Departamento de Cochabamba, Bolivia, desarrollan un translenguaje que combina y complementa el uso de las lenguas quechua y castellano en sus interacciones digitales en Facebook y WhatsApp. Contrariamente a lo planteado por la teoría lingüística clásica, la alternancia, la mezcla de códigos y las interferencias como reflejo de las imperfecciones del bilingüismo, en este artículo planteamos que el translenguaje constituye una estrategia discursiva ecológica que refleja el dominio de las lenguas que forman parte del repertorio lingüístico integral de los hablantes bilingües, sus habilidades de uso complementario de las mismas y las normas de interacción e interpretación en las interacciones digitales en función a la necesidades comunicacionales, a los interlocutores, a las temáticas de conversación y a las intenciones comunicativas.

Despite their recognition and officialization, their face-to-face and digital use in everyday interactions are restricted to the adult population and to small and intimate areas. Digital social networks constitute a new relational scenario for young people of Quechua origin who experience new forms of communication through a multimodal language that forces the Quechua language to fight its displacement and resist the onslaught by Spanish and English. From the digital ethnography of speech as a qualitative method that involved the application of techniques such as digital observation, interview and linguistic autobiography, the article shows how young schoolchildren from two provinces of the Department of Cochabamba, Bolivia, develop a translanguage that combines and complements the use of Quechua and Spanish languages in their digital interactions on Facebook and WhatsApp. Contrary to what is stated by cl...
