Elderly abuse and neglect are among the primary public health problems linked to global demograph... more Elderly abuse and neglect are among the primary public health problems linked to global demographic changes in the population, impacting not only the well-being of the elderly but also the growth of the nation or economy. This article discusses the effects of elder abuse and neglect on population health from the national and international perspectives through a narrative review of previously published articles on the concept of aging, the prevalence of elderly abuse and neglect, its risk factors and effects, and finally measures, legal perspectives, and recommendations to curb it. Interventions in Malaysia and selected nations, including Indonesia, South Korea, the United States, Australia, and Hong Kong, are examined. This issue is important as the majority of countries are moving toward being elderly populations. Improving global surveillance and the monitoring of instances is essential to inform policy actions to prevent elder abuse. In addition, a thorough assessment of the identified risk factors for violence and steps to prevent violence is required.
Introduction: Filaria, a parasitic disease caused by filarial worms, has posed a significant heal... more Introduction: Filaria, a parasitic disease caused by filarial worms, has posed a significant health burden in many countries in Asia. In response, various elimination programs have been implemented in the region to combat the transmission of this disease. While some countries in Asia have successfully implemented these strategies, others continue to face challenges in their elimination efforts. This study utilised a systematic review approach to identify the challenges encountered by Asian countries that have not yet achieved the status of elimination and to provide recommendation. Methods: A comprehensive search of databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and SpringerLink, was conducted based on PRISMA to gather relevant records from 2011 to 2021. The inclusion criteria were limited to Asian countries who that have not achieved elimination. JBI tools for cross-sectional and qualitative studies were used for quality assessment. Results: A total of 14 papers out of 372 papers were included in the review. The challenges identified in the filariasis elimination program in Asia can be categorised into five main themes: poor implementation strategy, poor political will, instability or crises, lack of research and surveillance, and lack of awareness, knowledge, perception among the community and geographical and demographic factors. Conclusion: Overall, this study highlights the importance of understanding and addressing the challenges faced by Asian countries and provide recommendations in their filariasis elimination programs. By acknowledging and actively working to overcome these challenges, health authorities can enhance their efforts to eliminate filariasis and improve the overall health outcomes of affected populations.

Introduction: Low back pain is an occupational hazard that can be preventable but disabling, pote... more Introduction: Low back pain is an occupational hazard that can be preventable but disabling, potentially affecting the work performance of healthcare workers. Previous studies have primarily focused on nurses, especially in hospital settings, leaving a gap in our understanding of staff in community health clinics with different work environments. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of low back pain and its associated occupational risk factors among healthcare workers in community health clinics. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 360 healthcare workers in Kota Kinabalu district collected sociodemographic data, occupational characteristics, low back pain history, and psychological characteristics. Low back pain risk assessment was performed using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and BACKS tool. Results: Among 360 participants, 71.7% reported experiencing low back pain within the past 12 months. Significant associations were found by Chi-Square test between low back pain and the number of children, Body Mass Index (BMI), smoking status, manual handling, awkward postures, assisted lifting of heavy objects, and psychological factors. The findings highlight the high prevalence of LBP among healthcare workers and its association with various occupational factors. Implications for designing specific disease prevention programs to protect healthcare workers are considered, thus enabling them to maintain the highest level of care for the general public.
