i am research fellow at the Ezri center for Iran and the Persian Gulf Studies and teaching in the Department of Middle Eastern History at the University of Haifa, Israel. currently, i am Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Minnesota for the Academic Year of 2014/15. my research, academic courses, and public talks reflect a focus on cross-disciplinary analysis of Palestinian History, Politics and Culture, The Arab-Israeli conflict, and the role of High Edu-cation and Students in Building National Identities in the Middle East.

Focussing on the political and social activities of Palestinian students in two arenas – the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian diaspora, Students & Resistance covers the period from 1952-2000. The book investigates the commonality of the goal of the respective movements in securing independence and the building of a sovereign Palestinian state, whilst simultaneously comparing their development, social tone and the differing challenges each movement faced.
Examining a plethora of sources including; Palestinian student magazines, PLO documents, Palestinian and Arabic news media, and archival records, to demonstrate how the Palestinian Student Movements became a major political player, this book is of interest to scholars and students of Palestinian History, Politics and the Arab-Israeli Conflict.
על רקע תהליכי האסלאמיזציה שעברו על החברה הפלסטינית ועל המזרח התיכון מאז 1967, ידעה פת"ח לפרוט על מרכיבי הרגש הדתי ולגייס אותו לטובת פעולתה הפוליטית, כל זאת על רקע הפסיביות שאפיינה את תנועת האחים המוסלמים שדגלה בדעוה – הכשרת לבבות – ומיאנה להיכנס לעימות מזוין עם ישראל. כניסתן של תנועות הג'יהאד האסלאמי והחמאס, אשר הציבו סדר יום אסלאמי מובהק למאבק מול ישראל בשנות ה-80, הציבו אתגר מהותי לפת"ח. אתגר זה התעצם לאחר חתימת הסכמי אוסלו והקמת הרשות הפלסטינית בהנהגת פת"ח-אש"ף בשנות ה-90, כמו גם לאחר פריצת אינתיפאדת אל-אקצא בשנת 2000. בתקופה זו נאלצה פת"ח להתמודד גם עם אתגרים פנימיים שהציבו בפניהם פלגים צבאיים שמשתייכים לשורותיה, אשר אימצו טרמינולוגיה אסלאמית ולא קיבלו על עצמם את דין התנועה.
ספר זה מסתמך על מגוון רב של מקורות בערבית, לצד מקורות ראשונים ייחודיים. הספר בוחן ומנתח את השיח האסלאמי של תנועת פת"ח בשלביה השונים – הן כתנועת שחרור והן כתנועה פוליטית החותרת לפשרה עם ישראל.

hybridity’. The Muslim tribunal serving the traditional Arab community is influenced by local circumstances and processes of internal change alongside the influence of Western modern culture. As a result, legal rulings and Shari’a terms that may sometimes express conservative perceptions operate alongside general state law that may sometimes reflect other perceptions. In this article, decisions of Shari’a courts in Israel are examined on questions of ‘legal competence’ in a sample of 24 cases from four Israeli local Shari’a courts as well as a couple of decisions from the Shari’a Court of Appeals (between 1993 and 2009). In view of competence being a key legal issue, examining the court decisions on this issue makes it possible to examine the complexity of the application of Israeli law and Shari’a law within a system of courts that on the one hand, are integral to the state’s formal legal system while on the other they see themselves as representatives of the Muslim minority and its culture.

הקדושה שבו יצרה הילה לגליל שנזכר ביצירות אומנתיות
רבות. במאמרנו זה, נבחן כיצד השתקף הגליל על בולי הקק"ל
ומדינת ישראל. אנו רואים בבולים כלי תקשורת המונים המהווה
את חלון הראווה של כל מדינה. במאמרנו נטען כי למרות
החשיבות ההיסטורית והמרכזיות של הגליל בתפיסת הביטחון
וההתיישבות הציונית, הוא למעשה זוכה לתת־ייצוג על בולי
המדינה. בחינת האופן שבו מיוצג הגליל על הבולים, והמסרים
המועברים מעל כלי תקשורת ממסדי זה, מלמדת אותנו על יחסי
הכוח בין מרכז ופריפריה ועל האופן שבו בחרה המדינה להנציח
את הגליל בזיכרון הקולקטיבי הישראלי.
