Taking into account the experience of the Advanced Ceramics R&D Lab, in the production of small- / medium- scale prototypes, this paper explores the main variables and constraints of the production of real-scale architectural components. This information points to a set of procedures that should be avoided and others that should be privileged, allowing to anticipate how AM can contribute for the achievement of high performance components on a large scale. This work has the financial support of the Project Lab2PT – Landscapes, Heritage and Territory laboratory – AUR/04509 and FCT through national founds and when applicable of the FEDER cofinancing, in the aim of the new partnership agreement PT2020 and COMPETE2020 – POCI ...

Since the financial crisis of 2008, the construction suffers and eagers to find solutions to face the new demand for housing and the lack of response to the current market cap. The shift for off-site construction is being talked recently with new development in technology with Building Information Modelling (BIM) leading this new transition. Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (D is the idea in this process, enhancing the design and production of the building parts in-house to be later assemble and transported to the site, providing a viable solution to the challenge presented.
The R&D presented on the communication was developed in the context of the Advanced Ceramics R&D Lab

However, one of the main characteristics inherent to this material, which happens in drying and firing phases, is the shrinkage of the material, which causes deformations and cracks in the surface of the produced elements. Thus, the shrinkage of the ceramic material may constitute an obstacle to the regular use of this material in the AM of architectural components. In this sense, it is important to study and point out ways and strategies to mitigate this drawback, making possible the correspondence between the final produced models and the digital ones in which they are based. This paper presents the main challenges and outcomes of several projects that use Liquid Deposition Modelling (LDM) of clay-paste as construction methodology.

This paper presents a research on the use of shape grammars as an analytical tool in the history of architecture. It evolves within a broader project called Digital Alberti, whose goal is to determine the influence of De re aedificatoria treatise on Portuguese Renaissance architecture, making use of a computational framework (Krüger et al., 2011). Previous work was concerned with the development of a shape grammar for generating sacred buildings according to the rules textually described in the treatise. This work describes the transformation of the treatise grammar into another grammar that can also account for the generation of Alberti’s built work.

This work explores the integration of digital design tools and AM extrusion processes on the production of ceramic architectural components for facade construction, reshaping and expanding the boundaries of what is possible to achieve with masonry construction in a wide range of applications (opaque walls, ventilated sunscreens, and shading systems). Several stoneware prototypes were developed, encompassing different challenges such as the morphology customisation, the versatility of use, the exploitation of the maximum degree of curvature, and the optimisation of structural patterns.

Additive manufacturing has an unique feature which is printing multi-faced complex geometries as easy as simple ones. Therefore additive manufacturing creates the chance of producing really small scaled complex forms. In a structural network, it can be easily understood that the more geometric variations to respond stress, the more adaptive structure will become to respond structural needs. The structural reaction is to be fictionalized by procedural operations and analysis that will be a tool to design multi-scaled fragmented structures. Those operations is to use the structural analysis and material reactions. Their iteration with the overall geometry will form the geometric generations. However the verification of the generations as outcomes of a real 3D printer is crucial. To verify, the precision of additive manufacturing should be sensitive enough that the structural element wil...

This paper intends to demonstrate the different AM Techniques in Architecture by mixing different materials, such as cellulose and starch. The research focus on the ecological potentials and limitations of a completely biodegradable material, cellulose -polysaccharide present on plant walls -for architecture using 3D printing techniques. The sensitive nature of this project is to take advantage of the potential of cellulose, an abundant, recyclable and biodegradable material, while transforming into a pulp for application in 3D printing for generation of new models taking advantage of the potentialities of the techniques in AM.

At the same time we seen a fast grow of the usage of ceramic materials to produce fully customised architectural components using Layer Deposition Modelling (LDM) [1] techniques. However, the use of this material, as paste, leads to a series of constraints relative to its behaviour when in the viscous state, but also in the drying and firing stages. Thus, when ceramic dries, the retraction effects may be a barrier to the regular use of this material to build future architectural systems. In this sense, it is important to study the material behaviour and know how to control and use it as a primary construction material. To do that we present the challenges and outcomes of project Hexashade, a ceramic vault shading system prototype whose geometry and internal structure is defined according to the solar incidence. This paper explain how we expect to build a real scale self-supporting prototype.

In this sense, is presented a case study that develops a system of both architectural and structural components -a column system. The definition process of the system is mediated by computational design, implementing not only structural analysis and optimization strategies, but also mimetic formal characteristics of nature to an initial grid, creating a model that adapts its formal attributes, depending on its assumptions and the material constraints. This process resulted in the definition of a set of solutions that better answer to a specific design problem.

The script translates the poem structure into an abstract grid, generating a drawing. The geometric definition of the poem is then constrained by the characters and their correspondent location to the sound code: the word nevermore and the textual reverberation it produces. A synthesis of the poem is achieved by a recursive selection of syllables, resulting in a graphical and textual configuration towards a rewritten final stanza. The process is repeated with the Portuguese translation of the poem, made by Fernando Pessoa in 1924. Although it follows the same initial structure and algorithms the change of idiom introduces different geometries and sound reverberations.
