Incense materials used at Rite Smells intersect with art, geography, gastronomy, history, literature, perfumery, religion, science, and other subjects. Active smelling in group settings using professional fragrance evaluation techniques builds community via subjective consensus and storytelling (verbalizing sensory impressions).
Contextually relevant scents bring branches of knowledge to life when integrated with lesson plans in the classroom. This makes learning fun, engaging and memorable.
Rite Smells was funded by Title VI grants from the US Department of Education awarded to: Center for South Asian Studies (SAS), Center for Southeast Asian Studies (SEAS), Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies (CMENAS), and Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) at the University of Michigan.
The patriarchs, kings, and prophets of the Bible and Qur’an are often held up as exemplars of how to “be a man.” But how do we gain access to the forms of masculinity described in these religious texts in the absence of embodied experience? Led by olfactory researcher and professional “nose” Michelle Krell Kydd, in this workshop we will use our sense of smell to travel back in time as we explore six scents that shaped the experience of manhood and the construction of normative masculinity in Biblical and Qur’anic traditions. Participants will be mailed a curated scent kit containing materials for sensory evaluation. In a live Zoom workshop, we will explore how these scents speak to our own experiences, identities and memories. The aromas you will receive are anonymized and will be revealed during the course of the workshop.
About Smell & Tell:
