Biotechnology
Undergraduate ProgramsWhy Study Biotechnology?
Get the skills and hands-on experience you need for the rapidly growing field of biotechnology and learn how to turn scientific discoveries into real life-saving solutions.
Biotechnology is a rapidly growing field, especially in the state of Maryland. The UMBC undergraduate program combines the theory of a traditional life science degree with hands-on, real-world applications of the process for turning scientific discoveries into real life-saving solutions. Undergraduates also have an opportunity to do an Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s degree so that they can earn a master’s or certificate while finishing their bachelor’s degree.
UMBC’s graduate Biotechnology curriculum is intended to provide students with the skills sought by the biotechnology industry, including through experiential learning. The curriculum provides advanced instruction in the life sciences, along with coursework in regulatory affairs, leadership, management, finances, commercialization and legal issues inherent to a life science-oriented business.
