Propuestas Críticas en Trabajo Social-Critical Proposals in Social Work

All non-institutionalized respondents aged 50+ were included in our sample (n=12,618). Mixed models were conducted to study the association between transitioning to retirement and depressive symptoms (CESD) among retirees, and to test the mediation effect of alcohol use. Results: Those retired for at least 6 years had increased probability of binge drinking. Additionally, binge drinking mediated the association between the retirement transition and depressive symptoms, making the effect stronger for those retired for 3 to 5 years (p< 0.05), and weaker and no significant for those retired for 6+ years (p>0.05). Thus, the decrease on depressive symptoms was higher for those retired between 3 to 5 years when being binge drinkers. Discussion and Implications: Addressing depressive symptoms and binge drinking among older adults is sorely needed. Binge drinking was associated with decreased depressive symptoms, consiste...
Food for Education in Guatemala: links between food intake and reading comprehension

All students in 3rd and 6th grade were surveyed across 118 schools, 3519 children in total. Generalised linear mixed models examined the influence of dietary diversity, and K’iche’ language ability, on children’s Spanish reading comprehension. Dietary diversity showed no significant relationships. However, consumption of eggs on the day of assessment predicted higher reading comprehension scores. Children who indicated they spoke K’iche’ fared worse on assessments. Implications for policy, practice, and research are discussed.

Food for Education in Honduras: Psychosocial correlates of childhood literacy

Some evidence suggests that bolstering schools as a nexus of community plays an important psychosocial function for children and families. This study examines the extent to which childhood literacy rates are associated with parents’ and teachers’ perceptions of community violence and cohesion, following participation in a large-scale school feeding program in the Department of Intibucá, Honduras. Primary school children (n = 3,147) from 176 schools completed standardized literacy tests. Scores were linked to parents’ (n = 328) and teachers’ (n = 537) responses about community cohesion and violence. Social bonding among parents was positively associated with children’s literacy. Community violence reported by teachers exerted a negative influence. The authors discuss these results in light of how vertically focused interventions such as school feeding can be integrated to account for the specific contextual factors that affect, and are affected by, the program itself.

Estimating the Risk of Poverty Transitions at Old Age in the United States: A Survival Analysis Focused on the Hispanic Population

Moreover, the high labor participation rate of aged workers does not translate into better living conditions and decreased poverty at old age. According to the OECD’s relative poverty threshold, the poverty rate at old age is 23.1% (14 points higher than the absolute measure), showing important increases as age progresses. In the context of financial pressure faced by SS, understanding the factors that could help people ensure themselves against poverty is crucial at old age, especially for groups such as Hispanics. Hispanics tend to rely mostly on SS, and tend to retire earlier than non-Hispanics due to limited working opportunities. Using data drawn from the Health and Retirement Study (2008-2016), cox survival models, were conducted to estimate the risk of transitioning into poverty during retirement on determinants of long-term accumulation of disadvantages over the life course (i.e.: wealth accumulation, med...

These initiatives have not delivered adequate health and environmental benefits owing to the less than optimal performance of improved biomass stoves. There is an urgency to transition communities to cleaner cooking systems such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to reduce the prevalence of HAP. Adoption of LPG also has challenges. This case-control cross-sectional study with 510 households examines how affordability, accessibility, and awareness (3As) are associated with LPG adoption in rural poor households of Andhra Pradesh, a state of India. Using binomial logistic regression analyses, the study examines the association of 3As with LPG adoption, adjusting for demographic predictors. Results show disparities in LPG adoption owing to affordability, accessibility, and awareness. Household income is positively associat...

Cultural Dimension of the Discrepancy of Planned and Actual Retirement Age in the U.S.: Hispanics Versus Non-Hispanics

All ethno-racial groups have increased their average retirement age over the last years. However, Hispanics’ retirement age is still lower even if they stated they plan to continue to work at retirement (EBRI 2008; Diaz-Valdes, 2018). Most studies about retirement timing have focused on middle-class Whites, and the prediction of planned or actual retirement separately. One of the lesser studied complexities of the retirement conundrum concerns ethno-racial differences and cultural-related predictors of retirement timing (Lytle et al, 2015). This study seeks to extend the understanding of differences between Hispanics and non-Hispanics regarding the timing of retirement...

In this context the productive aging framework has gained increased importance. There is evidence showing that engagement is related to late-life well-being and health (i.e., Hinterlong, 2006; Everard et al, 2000; Rozario et al, 2004; Matz-Costa et al, 2012). However, the productive aging framework lacks cultural sensitivity and evidence about the association between the effect of retirement on health and well-being in late-life is mixed. The current study seeks to contribute to this gap by exploring the consequences of the discrepancies between planned and actual retirement age on subjective health and well-being, comparing Hispanics and non-Hispanic Whites. A series of regression models were conducted to explore the effect of the discrepancy between planned and actual retiremen...
