Now add another complicating factor: the "fourth industrial revolution," a digital revolution accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Both established organizations and startups are now navigating the new work terrain of hybrid and fully remote workforces. And as this happens, people are taking stock of their career objectives, leading to the Great Resignation and making it more difficult to attract and retain team members.

Through her own navigation beyond prohibitive cultural expectations, Sengupta burgeoned in business and academics. She daringly served in Kurdistan, where she developed a novel entrepreneurial program jointly sponsored by an international charity and The American University. This program taught entrepreneurial skills and leveraged a business case process so that students received essential feedback from international business leaders and competed for seed money to fund viable business plans. Sengupta is presently associate professor and interim chair of business and director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning at American University of Afghanistan, and formerly dean of The American University of Kurdistan, and she has called her approach to entrepreneurship of the econ...

With many joining Virtual Human Resource Development (VHRD), the relationship of online teaching and learning to VHRD is understudied, thus necessitating exploration. Solution The complexity of virtual environments, dual emphasis on formal and informal learning, and the socio-cultural nature of large digital networks and learning management systems are explored. This article describes selected connections, presents recommended practices and implications for online instruction from the VHRD perspective, discusses digital tools for instructors and trainers, and presents cautions. Stakeholders Learning professionals are encouraged to dance within the paradox to promote learning agility for adapting within digital transformation and to use both high tech and low tech designs to sha...

The Covid-19 pandemic brought unprecedented crisis to a world already undergoing digital transformation. Millions of people began working virtually to prevent the spread of disease and to maintain business continuity, suddenly participating in virtual human resource development (VHRD) and alternative work strategies that helped organizations adapt to current challenges and prepare for future disruption. The purpose of this article is to analyze VHRD’s role in the crisis and the transition to a new era marked by further disruption and change. The Recommendation. This article provides a primer for understanding the environmental perspective of VHRD, analyzes reskilling and upskilling trends during the pandemic and for early stages of the fourth industrial revolution, and addresses learning, adaptation, cultural, workplace, and economic implications. We argue that many of the changes to the workplace were already underway, but the pandemic has accelerated transformation. F...

Creepy Technologies and the Privacy Issues of Invasive Technologies

The term “creepy technology” is appearing in the literature along with concerns for privacy, ethical boundaries, cybersecurity, and mistaken identity but is also in news articles to inform the public about technology advances that affect consumer privacy. Invasive technology provides the impetus for external adaptation for many organizations and current trends require rapid adaption to potential threats to security. Also, usability addresses how users respond and adapt to new technology. This chapter includes the presentation of an exploratory study of how the public responded to various technology announcements (N=689 responses) and results indicated a significant response to invasive technologies and some sense of freedom to opine. This chapt...
