La naturaleza es un tema tan viejo como el pensamiento. Sin embargo, nunca había parecido tan nuevo como ahora. Objeto hasta el presente de la reflexión filosófica y la investigación científica, ha trascendido estas fronteras para convertirse en parte importante del pensamiento y la acción políticas. De hecho, sólo en la actualidad goza la naturaleza de la condición de cuestión pública y políticamente relevante. Conviene precisar que, más que a la naturaleza, el imaginario político finisecular ha dado cabida al producto de las interacciones entre la sociedad y lo natural: el medio ambiente humano. Es decir, la naturaleza social y políticamente considerada (1). La Teoría de la Democracia ha encontrado en el modelo deliberativo el más recurrente instrumento crítico frente a las insuficiencias del liberalismo democrático. Frente a un modelo político basado en la agregación y satisfacción de preferencias, la democracia deliberativa defiende la necesidad de reforzar la legitimidad democrática de las decisiones colectivas -mediante la articulación institucional de una interacción pública de las preferencias individuales, que estimula el debate en torno a las concepciones del bien y la cristalización argumentativa del bien público. En este marco teórico, la política se presenta como una actividad esencialmente cooperativa, donde el conflicto es reconducido a través de la deliberación. Sin embargo, existe una visible distancia entre los presupuestos de la política deliberativa y su posible realización práctica; en la democracia deliberativa se produce, de hecho, el choque entre dos concepciones antagónicas de la política, que es necesario poner al descubierto.

As part of the recent rethinking of green politics, the construction of a green democracy has been subjected to increasing scrutiny. There is a growing consensus around deliberative democracy as the preferred model for the realisation of the green programme. As a result several arguments emerge when deliberative principles and procedures are to be justified from a green standpoint. This paper offers a critical assessment of the green case for deliberative democracy, showing that deliberation is being asked to deliver more than it is able to. However, it is suggested that the connection between sustainability, understood as a normative principle, and deliberative procedures may ultimately offer the best grounds for such a defence.

This is the title of my chapter in the recently published "Political Animals and Animal Politics", edited by Marcel Wissenburg and David Schlosberg (Palgrave 2014). I upload here both the Table of contents and the Introduction. A summary of my chapter within the latter says the following:

"Manuel Arias-Maldonado opens by arguing that the translation of
the call in animal ethics for a ‘more equal’ treatment of animals intoenvironmental and animal politics must start with the recognition of ourselves as political animals, and that recognition must take account of the specific kind of animal that we humans are: the exceptional animal, defined by a relatively open nature. Arias-Maldonado suggests a novel way to foster a more fraternal relationship between human beings and animals. He argues that an approach based on similarities between individual animals and humans has a limited political potential. Transcending the traditional ethical debate, he explores an alternative way of organising our social – rather than individual – relationship to animals, defined by the refinement rather than abolition of human domination. Departing from the notion that the human being is the exceptional animal, Arias-Maldonado argues that domination can and should evolve into sympathy towards animals, and he makes the case for a viable form of sympathy: one that employs technology in order to balance animal needs and human wishes".

The relationship between society and nature has an outstanding importance in the fields of environmental philosophy and sociology. It is dominated by the opposition between realism and constructivism, i.e., between those who argue that nature is an entity independent of society and those who respond that nature is a social construction. Such conflict is usually solved by accepting that nature exists, but our knowledge of it can only be socially mediated. However, a new version of constructivism can be defended, one which pays enough attention to the material dimension of society and nature’s interaction. Society has always intervened upon nature and the final outcome of such historical process has been the transformation of nature into human environment. A realistic constructivism allows us to highlight that decisive feature of socio-natural interaction.

So long as sustainability represents the attempt to pacify the relationship between societies and their natural environments, the concept must remain attentive to any findings about the character of such relation. In this regard, the rise of the Anthropocene cannot be ignored by environmental sociologists if a realistic understanding of sustainability is to be produced. The Anthropocene is a scientific notion, grounded on geology and Earth-system science, that plausibly suggests that human beings have colonized nature in a degree that has irreversibly altered the functioning of planetary systems. As a result, social and natural systems have become “coupled”. This paper tries to elucidate the consequences that an “Anthropocenic turn” would have for sustainability studies. To such end, it will explore the related notions of hybridity and relational agency as key aspects of a renewed view of nature. Correspondingly, it argues that cultivated capital (rather than natural or manmade) must be the most important unit for measuring sustainability and devising sustainable policies in a postnatural age.

Asistimos a la reaparición de viejos fantasmas políticos: el nacionalismo, la xenofobia, el populismo… Se trata de movimientos de introversión agresiva caracterizados por la búsqueda de un chivo expiatorio y por el predominio de las emociones sobre la razón. El resultado: una amalgama de pasiones muy distinta de la esfera pública sosegada que los ilustrados soñaron como fundamento para nuestras democracias representativas.

Al mismo tiempo, se ha hecho visible un giro afectivo en las ciencias sociales y las humanidades. Como consecuencia de los avances en el estudio del cerebro, se otorga un papel cada vez mayor a los afectos en nuestros procesos de percepción, cognición y decisión. Y, si bien las noticias que suministran los distintos saberes humanos no son definitivas, las neurociencias parecen indicar que nuestra soberanía individual es menor de lo que creíamos.

Así pues, ¿somos individuos políticamente racionales o más bien ciudadanos sentimentales? ¿Pueden explicarse los problemas de la democracia contemporánea como un efecto del peso de las emociones en el proceso político y la vida social? ¿O hay que rescatar a los afectos de su descrédito tradicional e integrarlos en una concepción más realista del ser humano?

En este exhaustivo trabajo, Manuel Arias Maldonado se enfrenta al desafío de arrojar luz sobre la cuestión. Con un enfoque admirablemente multidisciplinar, el autor plantea la necesidad de una reformulación de la autonomía individual y la defensa de una sociedad abierta en la que sujetos más sofisticados puedan gestionar reflexivamente sus propias emociones. Sin duda, somos demasiado humanos para lograrlo del todo, pero seríamos menos que humanos si dejáramos de intentarlo.

Resumen De acuerdo con los datos amasados por los científicos naturales, la colonización humana de la naturaleza ha alcanzado tal grado que hay razones para pensar que hemos dejado atrás el Holoceno para adentrarnos en una nueva era geológica caracterizada por la influencia humana sobre el funcionamiento del sistema planetario global: el Antropoceno. Lejos de constituir una mera curiosidad científica, esta recategorización de las relaciones entre el ser humano y medio ambiente global constituye un giro epistemológico de profundas consecuencias normativas, que plantea nuevos desafíos para la especie en su conjunto. Este trabajo explora los orígenes y el contenido de esta hipótesis, prestando especial atención a sus efectos sobre la autocomprensión de la especie, así como a sus implicaciones morales y políticas. El Antropoceno representa una prometedora oportunidad para reenmarcar la cada vez más relevante dimensión ambiental del debate sobre la buena sociedad y para reorganizar las relaciones socionaturales con arreglo a parámetros sostenibles. Abstract According to natural scientists, human colonization of nature has reached such degree that there are reasons to conclude that we have left behind the Holocene and we are entering into a new geological age featured by the human influence on the global planetary system: the Anthropocene. Far from being just a scientific curiosity, the latter represents an epistemological turn with deep normative consequences, as it does pose new challenges for the species as a whole. This paper explores the origins and content of the hypothesis, paying special attention to its effects on humanity's self-representation, as well as to its moral and political implications. The Anthropocene seems to be a promising opportunity for reframing the-increasingly relevant-ecological dimension of the debate on the good society and for reorganizing socionatural relations according to sustainable standards.

Resumen Este trabajo aborda el impacto de las nuevas tecnologías de la comunicación sobre la democracia. Y lo hace mediante el análisis del proceso de digitalización de la conversación pública, por entender que ésta es decisiva —en los regímenes de opinión— para la calidad del proceso político democrático. Se atiende por ello primordialmente al efecto que produce sobre los ciudadanos el empleo de las redes sociales y demás plataformas digitales, en el marco de una concepción de aquellos como sujetos afectivos influidos por sus emociones y sensaciones preconscientes. Se defiende la tesis de que las redes digitales son tecnologías intrínsecamente afectivas cuya influen-cia sobre la intelección y la acción política obliga a reconsiderar las concepciones vi-gentes sobre las democracias liberales realmente existentes. Resumen: Uno de los rasgos más destacados del populismo es su empleo de las emociones. Sin embargo, los análisis de la dimensión emocional del populismo suelen adolecer de cierta superficialidad. Este trabajo persigue, justamente, arrojar luz sobre las bases afectivas del populismo. A tal fin, pre-senta un análisis de los distintos aspectos de la afectividad populista, a partir de los hallazgos resultantes del giro afectivo experimentado por las ciencias sociales. Asimismo, se ocupa de los notables efectos que sobre la sentimen-talidad populista tiene la reconfiguración digital del espacio público. Abtract: One of the most prominent features of populism is its emotionality. Yet studies on the emotional dimension of populism tend to be rather superficial. Precisely, this article attempts to shed some light on the affective foundations of populism, taking advantage of the findings resulting from the affective turn that has taken place on the social sciences in the last years. In this connection, it also deals with the digital transformation of the public space and its effects on the populist sentimentality. 1. Introducción No cabe duda de que el populismo se ha convertido en uno de los fenómenos políti-cos más prominentes de nuestro tiempo. De ahí que se hayan multiplicado los estu-dios académicos sobre el mismo, que en su mayor parte tratan de arrojar luz sobre la naturaleza y causas de un objeto que no se deja atrapar fácilmente. Y si hay algo que puede encontrarse en ellos casi invariablemente, sea como elemento nuclear o adjetivo, es la descripción del populismo como fenómeno emocional o que recurre ha-bitualmente al emocionalismo. No habría populismo sin emociones, viene a sugerirse. Pero no es tan frecuente que se concrete el modo en que el populismo es emocional o se detallen sus estrategias afectivas. Más bien se da por supuesto que el recurso a un lenguaje recargado emocionalmente es eficaz, porque conecta con el estado de ánimo

This book brings together the most current thinking about the Anthropocene in the field of Environmental Political Theory ('EPT'). It displays the distinctive contribution EPT makes to the task of thinking through what 'the environment' means in this time of pervasive human influence over natural systems.

Across its chapters the book helps develop the idea of 'socionatural relations'—an idea that frames the environment in the Anthropocene in terms of the interconnected relationship between human beings and their surroundings. Coming from both well-established and newer voices in the field, the chapters in the book show the diversity of points of view theorists take toward the Anthropocene idea, and socionatural relations more generally. However, all the chapters exemplify a characteristic of work in EPT: the self-conscious effort to provide normative interpretations that are responsive to scientific accounts. The Introduction explains the complicated interaction between science and EPT, showing how it positions EPT to consider the Anthropocene. And the Afterword, by a pioneer in the field, relates all the chapters to a perspective that has been deeply influential in EPT.

This book will be of interest to scholars already engaged in EPT. But it will also serve as an introduction to the field for students of Political Theory, Philosophy, Environmental Studies, and related disciplines, who will learn about the EPT approach from the Introduction, and then see it applied to the pressing question of the Anthropocene in the ensuing chapters. The book will also help readers interested in the Anthropocene from any disciplinary perspective develop a critical understanding of its political meanings.
