The main issue of the paper is the specific features of the space and the time in their interrelation (chronotope) in the ethno-geographical part of Jordanes’ Getica. The analysis of these features is provided with the compresence of Getica with some similar texts, mainly with the texts of the antiquarian tradition of the Late Antiquity written by Aulus Gellius, Diodorus Siculus, Hesychius of Miletus, John the Lydian and John Malalas. This kind of narratives is characterized by (1) the specific chronotope of no timeline markers or space markers instead of them, (2) the polyphony of traditions, which allows to combine characters of different origins and registers within one narrative, (3) the euhemerism equalizing the mythological and epic figures with the historical ones, and (4) the interest in outstanding phenomena. The comprehension of Jordanes’ text as a part of the antiquarian tradition can explain some features of Getica which were previously considered to be the consequences of the shortening of the Cassiodorus’ text, which Jordanes worked with, or of Jordanes’ lack of education.

The Getica is the main and most ambivalent source on the history of the Goths before the Great Migration. Besides absence of other sources on the early Gothic history, studies of this source is further complicated by a possible reflection of oral tradition on its text, and the story of the witches can be an example of this influence. Moreover, it is placed in the part of the Getica with the highest concentration of the mythical and fabulous features. The article analyzes in detail the arguments against the origin of this story from the Gothic oral tradition, testifying to its constructiveness and Christian influence, as well as arguments in favor of the folklore nature of the story about the expulsion of witches using philological and folkloristics tools. The main issue of the article is the Gothic shamanism, a specific problem, noticed in the largest generalizing works on
the history and culture of the Goths (Wolfram 1992, Scardilli 1973). An appearance of such a kind of comprehension of Gothic
practice and linguistic features is analyzed through its conceptual connections with anthropological religion in its various
developments (Eliade 1951; Atkinson 1992) and the hypothesis on the homogeneity of the patterns of the circumpolar region
(Price 2017). Gothic shamanism mentioned in large generalizing works and reference publications as a revealed fact without
a sufficiently large-scale previous discussion. Moreover, even after the publication of the works, a wide controversy on the
study of the Ostrogoths also develops in other directions, such as questions of ethnic truth and accepted written sources.
It seems important to begin such a kind of discussion with the comprehension of the theoretical basis for understanding
shamanism in P. Scardili’s and H. Wolfram’s views. Taking un the consideration the modern anthropology of religion and
subsequent research in this field, two questions are proved by productive research: (1) What magical phenomena and practice
are found among the Goths, and what sources can we use to investigate? (2) Were these notions and experiences shamanic,
why so and within what understanding of shamanism can we comprehend this?

expulsion of witches using philological and folkloristics tools. The author borrows some external sources and offers an
assessment of to what extent the existence of ideas about such witches could be realistic in Gothic communities, for the
historicity of the story itself about their expulsion seems to be hardly probable. Finally, the article attempts to estimate
relations between the information from the Getica and reconstructible reality of Gothic magical practices.

A Review of MARION KRUSE, THE POLITICS OF ROMAN MEMORY: FROM THE FALL OF THE WESTERN EMPIRE TO THE AGE OF JUSTINIAN. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2019, 304 pp

Kruse—professor of Classics at the University of Cincinnati—investigates the difficulties of building a new historical memory and identity in the late Roman Empire at the end of the 5th—first half of the 6th century. At that time, the emperors did not actually control Italy and Rome, a previous center and origin of imperial statehood. The study is based on an analysis of the texts of the most influential authors of this period, in particular historians of the era of the emperor Justinian, as well as the narrative of his own laws—Novellae of the Corpus Juris Civilis. The monograph represents Kruse’s substantially reworked PhD dissertation on classical philology. In his study, Kruse makes a successful attempt at a large-scale revision of the current concept of modern science about the indifference of contemporaries to the events of 476 in Italy and argues that the assessment of these events as the fall of the Western Roman Empire and a momentous event is only a ...

The main issue of this article is the attempt to understand whether there were any Germanic patterns of behaviour that correlate with the Latin rhetorical design of Theoderic's matrimonial diplomacy. The main source used is the Variae, a letter collection of Cassiodorus Senator.
