Ces applications offrent aux professionnels comme au grand public un accès ouvert et enrichi à l'information géographique. Dans cet article, nous proposons les bases conceptuelles d'une nouvelle solution technologique baptisée WikiSIG. La force du WikiSIG réside dans sa capacité à assurer la traçabilité des évolutions spatiotemporelles des composantes géographiques générées par les utilisateurs (géométriques : localisation et forme/graphiques : iconographie/descriptives : sémantique). Nous proposons également de mettre en évidence en quoi le WikiSIG constitue un support innovant au GeoDesign collaboratif. ABSTRACT. With the emergence of Web 2.0, new applications arise and evolve into more interactive forms of collective intelligence. These applications offer to both professionals and citizens an open and expanded access to geographic information. In this paper, we develop the conceptual foundations of a new technology solution called WikiGIS. WikiGIS's strength lies in its ability to ensure traceability of changes in spatial-temporal geographic components generated by users (geometric location and shape; graphics: iconography; descriptive: semantics). UMapIT is an on-demand web mapping tool that is being developed in an attempt to provide Internet... more UMapIT is an on-demand web mapping tool that is being developed in an attempt to provide Internet users with flexible means to personalize maps and interactively navigate within them. Based on a specific multiple representation database structure, it offers new functionalities to be applied at the occurrence level. These innovative functionalities come from the datacube paradigm. They include geometric drills which allow the user to navigate between the different LoDs (Level of Detail) associated to an object or to the different geometries of a same LoD that are aimed at different purposes. These functionalities also address the semantic and graphic aspects as well, offering further flexibility to the users interested in navigating among the different meanings associated to an object or change its visual variables (e.g. color, symbol) without affecting other occurrences of the same class. Furthermore, the underlying structure of UMapIT allows for the support of "GenZoom" operations that adjust each object's geometry individually according to the map scale, simulating on-the-fly cartographic generalization. The objective of this chapter is to illustrate the new capabilities offered by merging the datacube paradigm with an occurrence-based approach for on demand web mapping. Emphasis is given to fundamental concepts and to their implementation into UMapIT. Such merging of GIS and datacube concepts, which emerged from the Business Intelligence (BI) field, has raised a lot of interest and research funding in Canada, reflecting the evolution going on in this country from spatial data management (using transactional systems) towards highly flexible spatial analytical systems (using geospatial intelligence technologies). This chapter also provides a solution to the desire of Canadian organisations to offer better map-on-demand web services.

Such technologies are having significant impacts on every domain of application, including environmental health surveillance. Despite broad acceptance of the "fitness-for-use" criteria as a key component of geographic information quality assessment, quality information is still communicated as if it was addressed to a single usage or that requirements are perfectly known by the targeted users. Typically, users are disregarded or under-represented from the system design process. At best, some users are involved in a working group; at worst, their needs are assumed.

Risk Management for the Simultaneous Use of Spatial Datacubes: A Semantic Interoperability Perspective

Data warehouses are being considered as efficient components of decision support systems. They ar... more Data warehouses are being considered as efficient components of decision support systems. They are usually structured as datacubes, i.e. according to the multidimensional paradigm. Spatial datacubes contain spatial components which allow spatial visualization and aggregation. One may need to use several spatial datacubes which may be heterogeneous in design or content. This heterogeneity may cause concerns about the risk of data to be misinterpreted, and hence about the repercussion of that risk on decision analysis. Supporting data interpretation by overcoming the heterogeneity problems has been the principal aim of semantic interoperability. In spite of successful initiatives and widespread use of international standards, today's solutions, on one hand, still have a considerable vulnerability to the risk of misinterpretation, and on the other hand, do not address yet spatial datacubes. This paper describes the risks of misinterpretation related to the simultaneous use of spatial datacubes and proposes a risk management approach based on context-based semantic interoperability.

A hypercube-based data structure for spatio-temporal exploration and analysis

This paper examines the opportunities existing within the multidimensional database (MDDB) approa... more This paper examines the opportunities existing within the multidimensional database (MDDB) approach to support spatio-temporal data exploration and analysis (STEA). MDDB-specific technology used for Data Warehousing and On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) is recognized for supporting easy query building, rapid query run times and simple interactive navigation within multiple displays, including maps. However, due to the lack of topological operators (spatial and temporal) in MDDBs limited STEA can be achieved. We thus propose a new data structure which implements a spatiotemporal dimension of topological operators in multidimensional databases. It involves a hierarchy of topological operators which uses the spatial and temporal relationships between instances of object classes. This hierarchy is structured according to granularity levels (4 in our example). Operators at the highest level carry general meanings while operators from the lowest levels have very specific meanings. This hierarchy also takes into consideration behavior models of spatial analysis in order to improve database usability.
