Methods: The wild mammals were caught in the Chaco, valleys and the tropical zone of Bolivia, using Sherman, Havahard and Tomahawk traps. Captured animals were anesthetized and xenodiagnosis and blood cardiac puncture was performed; trypanosomatides isolation using blood culture was done in NNN culture media and the respective identification was performed by PCR-RFLP techniques in the molecular biology laboratory of IIBISMED. Results: 236 wild mammals belonging to 30 species were captured, of which 7 species showed infection by hemoflagellates. Trypanosoma cruzi was isolated from Didelphis marsupialis, D. albiventris, Galea musteloides, Graomys domorum and Andalgalomis pearsoni; T.c. marinkellei and T. dionisii were isolated from Carolia perspicillat...

Species distribution models (SDM) have been widely used to predict geographic and climatic ranges of species. Geoffroy's cat Leopardus geoffroyi is a small felid of least concern that occupies a wide variety of habitat types in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. We evaluated the fine-scale distribution of Geoffroy's cat at the sub-continental level, estimated its current extent and area of occurrence and discussed the current and potential ranges developed with SDM. On the basis of species occurrences (n = 1502) and large-scale environmental data, two model types ('environmental' and 'land cover') were developed using MaxEnt. The estimated extent of occurrence of Geoffroy's cat was 3 180 664 km 2 , but the potential area of occurrence predicted by our environmental model was 70% larger due to areas with high suitability (i.e. >0.5) compared to the species' current range. The most important bioclimatic factors affecting Geoffroy's cat presence were temperature seasonality, mean temperature of the coldest quarter and annual precipitation. Two recent records obtained outside the known distribution of the species fell within the highsuitability area (i.e. >0.5) predicted by our model. Our SDM suggest that this habitat-generalist felid is probably expanding its distribution range by taking advantage of changes in human land use.

Studies have shown that such inflammation and impaired insulin signaling contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, new therapeutic strategies are needed for the treatment of T2DM and T2DM-linked AD. Melatonin is primarily known for its circadian role which conveys message of darkness and induces night-state physiological functions. Besides rhythm-related effects, melatonin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Melatonin levels are downregulated in metabolic disorders with IR, and activation of melatonin signaling delays disease progression. The aim of this Review is to highlight the therapeutic potentials of melatonin in preventing the acceleration of AD in T2DM individuals through its therapeutic mechanisms, including antioxidative effects, anti-inflammatory effects, restoring mitochondrial function and insulin sensitivity.

The Andean cat (Leopardus jacobita) and the pampas cat (L. colocolo) are two of the least studied felids. Both are threatened, of similar size and live sympatrically in the Andes of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Perú. AimsWe aimed at estimating the population densities of the Andean cat and pampas cat in two continuous areas and to analyse the activity patterns of these two species and that of mountain vizcacha (Lagidium viscacia), the main prey of the Andean cat. MethodsWe used camera traps to evaluate the density of both felid species using the space explicit capture recapture (SECR) framework and the overlap in their activity patterns with that of mountain vizcacha, using the kernel-density estimator in two contiguous areas in the Bolivian Altiplano, at Muro-Amaya and at Micani, both within the Ciudad de Piedra region. Key re...
