In recent years, my research has focused on the theory and typology of inflectional morphology:
•In a series of publications, I have argued for an inferential-realizational theory of inflectional morphology known as Paradigm Function Morphology.
•Together with Raphael Finkel, I have argued for a novel approach to morphological typology based on the implicative patterns in a language's inflectional paradigms.
•Together with Andrew Hippisley, I have undertaken an investigation of the alignment systems of the Eastern Iranian languages.

I have served as review editor for the journal Language and currently serve as co-editor of the journal Word Structure.

Inflectional Paradigms: Content and Form at the Syntax-Morphology Interface

Sometimes dismissed as linguistically epiphenomenal, inflectional paradigms are, in reality, the ... more Sometimes dismissed as linguistically epiphenomenal, inflectional paradigms are, in reality, the interface of a language’s morphology with its syntax and semantics. Drawing on abundant evidence from a wide range of languages (French, Hua, Hungarian, Kashmiri, Latin, Nepali, Noon, Old Norse, Sanskrit, Turkish, Twi and others), Stump examines a variety of mismatches between words’ content and form, including morphomic patterns, defectiveness, overabundance, syncretism, suppletion, deponency and polyfunctionality. He demonstrates that such mismatches motivate a new grammatical architecture in which two kinds of paradigms are distinguished: content paradigms, which determine word forms’ syntactic distribution and semantic interpretation, and form paradigms, which determine their inflectional realization. In this framework, the often nontrivial linkage between a lexeme’s content paradigm and its stems’ form paradigm is the nexus at which incongruities of content and form are resolved. Stump presents clear and precise analyses of a range of morphological phenomena in support of this theoretical innovation.

Drawing on evidence from a diverse range of languages including Chinantec, Dakota, French, Fur, Icelandic, Ngiti and Sanskrit, the authors propose innovative ways of measuring inflectional complexity. Designed to engage graduate students and academic researchers, the book presents opportunities for further investigation. The authors' data sets and the computational tool that they constructed for their analysis are available online, allowing readers to employ them in their own research. Readers can access the online computational tool through www.cambridge.org/stump_finkel.

This book presents a formal framework for the analysis of word structure in human language. It se... more This book presents a formal framework for the analysis of word structure in human language. It sets forth the network of hypotheses constituting Paradigm Function Morphology, a theory of inflectional form. The book differs from other recent works on the same subject in that it treats inflectional morphology as an autonomous system of principles rather than as a subsystem of syntax or phonology and it draws upon evidence from a diverse range of languages in motivating the proposed conception of word structure.

In a series of publications, Stephen Anderson developed the idea that the definition of a languag... more In a series of publications, Stephen Anderson developed the idea that the definition of a language's inflectional morphology involves blocks of realization rules such that (i) realization rules' order of application follows from the ordering of the blocks to which they belong and (ii) realization rules belonging to the same block stand in a relation of paradigmatic opposition. A question that naturally arises from this conception of rule interaction is whether it is possible for the same rule to figure in the application of more than one block. I discuss two systems of verb inflection exploiting exactly this possibility -- those of Limbu and Southern Sotho. In order to account for the special properties of such systems, I argue that in the definition of a language's inflectional morphology, one rule may be dependent upon another, and that in such cases, the dependent rule may figure in the application of more than one block precisely because the "carrier" rules...

In this chapter, I examine the defining characteristics of inflectional paradigms (Section 1.1). ... more In this chapter, I examine the defining characteristics of inflectional paradigms (Section 1.1). A central issue in morphological theory is whether inflectional paradigms have theoretical significance. According to paradigm-based theories of inflection (e.g. those of Stump 2001, Blevins 2006, Ackerman, Blevins and Malouf 2009, Brown and Hippisley 2012), the definition of a language's inflectional morphology makes essential reference to the structure of paradigms; but according to morpheme-based theories (e.g. those of Halle and Marantz 1993, Bobaljik 2002, Muller 2002), paradigms are instead merely an epiphenomenal effect of principles of morpheme combination, having no essential role in the definition of a language's inflectional morphology. I compare the morpheme-based perspective (Section 1.2) with the paradigm-based approach (Section 1.3); of these, only the latter is compatible with two central hypotheses for which I argue in this book: the irreducibility hypothesis and the interface hypothesis. What is an inflectional paradigm? In a language with inflectional morphology, morphosyntactic properties are grammatical properties to which the language's syntax and morphology are both sensitive. In French, for example, the gender properties “feminine” and “masculine” and the number properties “singular” and “plural” are morphosyntactic properties. On one hand, syntactic agreement relations are sensitive to contrasts in gender and number; thus, the noun phrase in (1) is grammatical because its constituents agree in gender and number, and the noun phrase in (2) is ungrammatical because its constituents fail to agree in this way. At the same time, rules of inflectional morphology are likewise sensitive to contrasts in gender and number; thus, the French adjective national has distinct feminine and masculine forms in the plural (feminine plural nationales /nasjɔnal/, masculine plural nationaux /nasjɔno/), while in the singular, the feminine and masculine forms of national are distinguished orthographically though not phonologically (feminine singular nationale , masculine singular national , both /nasjɔnal/). (1) les musees nationaux the. pl museum. masc.pl national. masc.pl ‘the national museums’ (2) *le musees nationales the. masc.sg museum. masc.pl national. fem.pl Some morphosyntactic properties have specific semantic correlates; thus, noun phrases with singular reference tend to be headed by nouns in their singular form. But morphosyntactic properties may also lack any obvious semantic correlate; thus, while noun phrases with female reference may tend to be headed by feminine nouns, some feminine nouns (e.g. recrue ‘recruit,’ sentinelle ‘sentinel’) ordinarily have male reference and others – in fact, the large majority – fail to refer specifically to either sex ( souris ‘mouse,’ table ‘table,’ invention ‘invention,’ and so on).

It examines the early Indic declensional morphology to determine some varied interactions between defectiveness and syncretism. In the Indic morphology, three canonical kinds of interaction were defined: defectiveness may override syncretism, syncretism may determine the domain of defectiveness, and syncretism may override defectiveness. Theoretical explanation of these interactions suggests that the language's morphology makes reference to two distinct paradigms. These paradigms are: 1) content paradigms which express the range of syntactic uses to which the lexemes may be put; and 2) form paradigms which express the range of inflectional realization to which the root may arise. At first glance, they are rather similar: both realize a particular value of tense through a combination of a lexical verb (devoid of personal agreement) and an agreeing auxiliary. There are, however, important differences which are revealed in this chapter: the periphrastic future is available for every verb, and can be distinguished from the synthetic future on semantic grounds, while the periphrastic perfect is available only for certain verbs, and these do not make up a semantically homogeneous group. A formal analysis is proposed, within Paradigm Function Morphology, for the two periphrastic tenses. It is demonstrated that a morphological rather than a purely syntactic account is preferable here.
