Azami Zaharim worked first 13 years as a lecturer in the Universiti Teknologi MARA (University of MARA Technology - UiTM) before joining the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University of Malaysia - UKM) in the year 2003. He obtained his BSc(Statistics and Computing) with Honours from North London University, UK in 1988 and PhD(Statistics) in 1996 from University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. He specialize in statistics, public opinion, engineering education and renewable energy resources.

He has until now published over 120 research papers in Journals and conferences (154 in SCOPUS and 177 documents in ISI),conducted more than 20 public opinion consultancies and delivered more than 15 keynotes/invited speeches at national and international meetings.

In the year 2007, he headed the Engineering Mathematics Research Group. Satellite images have been indentified as an alternative and accurate method for predicting avera... more Satellite images have been indentified as an alternative and accurate method for predicting average annual daily solar radiation of a specific location. These images can be use to predict the performance and sizing of various solar energy systems such as solar thermal and photovoltaic applications. The data from satellite images are used and compared with the actual readings from solar instruments. The results are then used to estimate solar intensity for other places where solar instrument is not available. Malaysia lies entirely in the equatorial region. The tropical environment has been characterized by heavy rainfall, constantly high temperature and relative humidity. The annual average daily solar irradiations for Malaysia were from 4.21 kWh/m 2 to 5.56 kWh/m 2 . The highest solar radiation was estimated at 6.8 kWh/m 2 in August and November while the lowest was 0.61 kWh/m 2 in December. The Northern region and a few places in East Malaysia have the highest potential for solar energy application due to its high solar radiation throughout the year.

This study was proposed to develop a composite of outcome measures using forced expiratory volume... more This study was proposed to develop a composite of outcome measures using forced expiratory volume percentage of predicted, exercise capacity and quality of life scores for assessment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) severity. Eighty-six patients with COPD were enrolled into a prospective, observational study at the respiratory outpatient clinic, National University Hospital Malaysia (Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia--HUKM), Kuala Lumpur. Our study found modest correlation between the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)), 6 min walk distance and the SGRQ scores with mean (SD) values of 0.97 (0.56) litres/s, 322 (87) m and 43.7 (23.6)%, respectively. K-Means cluster analysis identified four distinct clusters which reached statistical significance which was refined to develop a new cumulative staging system. The SAFE Index score correlated with the number of exacerbations in 2 years (r = 0.497, p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;0.001). We have developed the SGRQ, Air-Flow limitation and Exercise tolerance Index (SAFE Index) for the stratification of severity in COPD. This index incorporates the SGRQ score, the FEV(1) % predicted and the 6 min walk distance. The SAFE Index is moderately correlated with the number of disease exacerbations.

Employers nowadays place main concern on and give emphasis to employability skills in potential e... more Employers nowadays place main concern on and give emphasis to employability skills in potential engineers which caused a significant increase in unemployment among engineering graduates in Malaysia. There are several discussions and studies on "What types of skills and abilities are needed in the workplace?" How the government and higher education overcomes this rising phenomenon? This study attempts to look into engineering employability skills that have been required for their new engineers by other countries in Asia such as Malaysia, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. This paper will put forward a list comprised of the skills needed by these four countries, and compare the existing similarities and differences of these enlisted skills. Information was gathered from articles, journals, papers and reports. The findings indicate that these countries have published reports on the necessary frameworks of employability skills to prepare engineering graduates for the employment today and in the future. Overall, the studies suggest that the engineering graduates should acquire and demonstrate a set of generic skills such as communication skills, problem solving and interpersonal skills.

This paper discusses a comprehensive study of employers' perception and expectation of Malaysian ... more This paper discusses a comprehensive study of employers' perception and expectation of Malaysian engineering graduates towards assessing measurable qualities. To have better overview in this issue, a survey on the needs, perception and expectation of Malaysian industries towards graduate engineers is conducted. In order to create a smoother transition from education to practice, some argue that engineering education should put more emphasis on the engineering-based knowledge. Thus, this study investigates also the gap analysis which is defined as the difference between expectation and perception among majority of Malaysian industries towards existing engineering graduates. Literally, it is to investigate the discrepancies between employers' perception and expectation towards future engineering work force of all the sectors or industries in Malaysia for non-technical and technical proficiencies. For the purpose of this paper, both technical and non technical attributes are analyzed and discussed. A total of 422 companies from various industries in Malaysia were chosen for the face-to-face interview sessions using a set of questionnaires. The respondents were mainly from high ranking personnel in their firm. The outcomes of this study will later be considered as a revision guideline for the engineering education curricula of Malaysian Institutions of Higher Learning. Optimization of renewable energy hybrid system by minimizing excess capacity

Optimization of renewable energy hybrid system looks into the process of selecting the best compo... more Optimization of renewable energy hybrid system looks into the process of selecting the best components and its sizing with appropriate operation strategy to provide cheap efficient, reliable and cost effective. The technoeconomic analysis usually looks at the cheapest cost of energy produced by of system components while neglecting the excess capacity of the combination. This paper discusses the optimization of the hybrid system in context of minimizing the excess energy and cost of energy. The hybrid of pico hydro, solar, wind and generator and battery as back-up is the basis of assessment. The system configuration of the hybrid is derived based on a theoretical domestic load at a remote location and local solar radiation, wind and water flow rate data. Three demand loads are used in the simulation using HOMER to find the optimum combination and sizing of components. Another set of demand loads is used to investigate the effect of reducing the demand load against the dominant power provider of the system. The results show that the cost of energy can be reduced to about 50% if the demand load is increased to the maximum capacity. Reducing the load to the capacity of the dominant power provider will reduce the cost of energy by 90%.

Off-grid settlements require efficient, reliable and cost-effective renewable energy as alternati... more Off-grid settlements require efficient, reliable and cost-effective renewable energy as alternative to the power supplied by diesel generator. Techno-economic analysis is required to find the optimum renewable energy system in the long run. This paper reviews the application of genetic algorithms in optimization of hybrid system consisting of pico hydro system, solar photovoltaic modules, diesel generator and battery sets. It is intended to maximize the use of renewable system while limiting the use of diesel generator. Daily load demand is assumed constant for derivation of annual load. Power derived from the hybrid should be able to meet the demand. Local weather data is used and analyzed to assess the technical and economic viability of utilizing the hybrid system. Optimization of the system will be based on the component sizing and the operational strategy. Genetic algorithms programming is used to evaluate both conditions in minimizing the total net present cost for optimum configuration. Manufacturer data for the hybrid components is used in calculation of sizing to represent actual power derivation. Several operation strategies will be considered while forming the vectors for optimum strategy. Random selection of sizing and strategy is used to initiate the solution for the problem which will have the lowest total net present cost. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to optimize the system at different conditions.
