We live in times of anthropogenic climate crisis. Or do we? This essay shows how “humanity” is a thoroughly modern fetish forged in the bloodbath of militarized accumulation and conquest after 1492. To say that the Anthropos drives the climate crisis implicates a historical actor that does not exist. But the reality is different. Humanity does nothing. Specific groups of humans make history – empires, classes, religious institutions, armies, and financiers. This essay reveals the Anthropocene as more than lousy history – although the flight from world history is crucial. It argues that today’s Anthropocene is one pillar of the Environmentalism of the Rich. It is rooted historically in the Civilizing Project, and, more recently, in post‑1970 “Spaceship Earth” environmentalism. Both Environmentalism and its recent Anthropocene craze have sought to do one thing above all: deflect blame from capitalism as the prime mover of the climate crisis. From the beginning, Environmentalism avoided “naming the system.” Only by identifying the climate crisis as capitalogenic – “made by humans” – can we begin to forge an effective socialist politics of climate justice.
The article presents preliminary remarks on the languages of the Anthropocene. It presents the assumption that the Anthropocene requires a multidimensional, heterogeneous, cross‑scale view; therefore, how we name and describe the geological epoch matters to our thinking about the causes, consequences, and actors responsible for the ecological and climate crisis. The author then describes a few exemplary languages of the Anthropocene: the language of geology, various theoretical discourses, as well as literature and art. The penultimate part of the article presents the content of the 11th volume of the journal AUPC. Studia Poetica. In the final part, the author proposes the “diffractive Anthropocene” category, which, in his opinion, makes it possible to face the Anthropocene as a new, non-intuitive, emergent event.
The article joins the discussion between the Anthropocene and the Capitalocene. It begins with a reconstruction of the objections to the first one made by, among others, Jason W. Moore, Eileen Crist or Donna Haraway (incorrect diagnosis of the causes of the ecological and climate crisis, ignoring the unequal responsibility for this crisis, maintaining the anthropocentric vision of the world). Subsequently, the author presents counterarguments of the supporters of the Anthropocene, including Ian Angus, Clive Hamilton, and Dipesh Chakrabarty (the Anthropocene does not ignore the economic and political context, supporters of the Capitalocene make an unjustified transfer of geological diagnoses to the field of sociology, the narrative about capitalism is not a broad enough framework to study climate change). The end of the article attempts to fuse the horizons of both concepts. The author sees them as two versions of climate hermeneutics, attempting to understand what is happening to our world and to work out an answer to this process.

Przełożenie hermeneutyki radykalnej na grunt literaturoznawstwa polega przede wszystkim na uczynieniu z niej języka interpretacji twórczości pisarzy, których cechuje szczególna uczciwość intelektualna i egzystencjalna, nakazująca im mierzyć się z „trudnością życia” bez uciekania się do złudnych pocieszeń czy uproszczeń, warunkująca krytykę metafizyki, a także implikująca szczególne nastawienie etyczne, pokrewne Caputowskiej „poetyce zobowiązania”. Tak pojętą postawę danych pisarzy czy bohaterów literackich uznać można za hermeneutykę radykalną sensu largo – swoisty dyskurs bliski hermeneutyce Caputo, jednak rozwijany niezależnie od niej; cechujący się podobieństwem diagnoz, ale dochodzący do nich za pomocą odmiennych metod. Z tej perspektywy autor interpretuje projekty poetyckie Aleksandra Wata, Tadeusza Różewicza i Stanisława Barańczaka.
The book offers the first systematic introduction to John D. Caputo’s radical hermeneutics in Polish literary studies. Works of American hermeneut have so far been presented in Polish humanities mainly by philosophers and culture experts, however, there was a lack of approach that would apply the language and tools of radical hermeneutics to the ground of literary studies. Patryk Szaj tries to make up for this lack by proposing an authorial interpretation of Caputo’s thought, which oscillate around the imperative of “sticking with the original difficulty of life”, drawing the hermeneutic aspects of Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction, and inscribing radical hermeneutics into the heritage of current, modern hermeneutic philosophy, mainly of Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer ones, with whom Caputo is connected by an ambivalent, approving-negating attitude, requiring to treat radical hermeneutics in the categories of Verwindung – “getting over”, critical distance, permanent “goodbye” with modern hermeneutics, which, however, remains a necessary, inalienable point of reference. For these reasons, a structure of contradictio in adiecto is metaphorically attributed to radical hermeneutics: in contrast to the traditional explaining hermeneutics as “displaying”, “explaining”, “transferring”, it emphasizes specifically conceived “undisplayability”, “inexplainability”, “intransferability”, and its “radicalism” means, contrary to Latin etymology (radicitus – rooted), that it lacks access to origins, foundations, principles.
Translating radical hermeneutics into the field of literary studies is primarily conceived as making it a tool for interpreting works of writers who are characterized by special intellectual and existential honesty, ordering them to face with the “difficulty of life” without resorting to illusory consolations or simplifications, conditioning the criticism of metaphysics, as well as implying a particular ethical attitude related to Caputo’s “poetics of obligation”. Such a disposition of writers or literary heroes can be considered as radical hermeneutics in the broad sense – a specific discourse close to Caputo’s hermeneutics, but developed independently of it; characterized by the similarity of diagnoses, but establishing them by means of different methods. From this perspective, the author interprets the poetic projects of Aleksander Wat, Tadeusz Różewicz and Stanisław Barańczak.
