What contributes to the success of Grade 1 (G1) contractors is a key concern of the construction industry as the performance of contractor is far from satisfactory. The success of construction project is a fundamental issue for Local and Federal Government. Certain studies have been carried out to examine the critical success factors (CSFs) for contractors. However, it is unrealistic to assume that these CSFs are relevant to all types of contractor. The objective of this paper is to analyse the CSFs for G1 contractors in completing government projects. Based on questionnaire survey conducted in Perak, five success attributes that comprises seventeen critical success factors had been asked to sixty six respondents. The result indicates that most G1 contractors claimed that financial attributes is the most important CSFs that contributed to their success in completing government projects. This paper contributes to build the CSFs attributes to assist the G1 contractors to provide a better service as well as gaining a strategic competitive advantage. Therefore, it will improve contractor's performance in completing the government projects and increases the number of successful government projects in Malaysia.
