I'm a Lecturer in the Department of Rhetoric at the University of Iowa with an M.F.A. in Nonfiction and a Ph.D. in Language, Literacy and Culture from the University of Iowa. I received my B.A. from the Department of Art and Art History and the Department of Political Science at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA.

Writing: Essays, articles and fiction have appeared in the Iowa Review, The Morning News, The Burnside Review, the Des Moines Register, Annals of Iowa and on WSUIs (Iowa) Weekend Edition, among other places.

Past work experience includes graphic design, project management in the tech industry and Peace Corps.

A Dangerous Man: Lewis Terman and George Stoddard, their Debates on Intelligence Testing, and the Legacy of the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station (Annals of Iowa)

The bell rang, ending Wisdom to Live By (9th grade, fifth period) and I assumed my station by the... more The bell rang, ending Wisdom to Live By (9th grade, fifth period) and I assumed my station by the door, reminding them to not dry their palms and to exit one at a time while holding a hand over the glass panel above the light switch until the red light blinked. One of the girls whispered that our Course Reader was pure donkey. She was right but of course I had to tell to watch her language as that's not how ladies talk. Once the last child passed, a thin tongue of paper rolled out of the E-slot confirming sixteen-percent more perspiration on their dermis than at the beginning of class, which translated into 86% effectiveness and a real boost to my weekly gains report...

Research Statement

My scholarly interests place oral histories exploring the performance aspect of intellectual and ... more My scholarly interests place oral histories exploring the performance aspect of intellectual and educational identities within broader historical contexts to explore ways in which institutions and cultures impose identities. It does so with a particular eye to the role of standardized testing. Exploring these relationships is important because, motivated by a faith in their use as an accurate measure of educational quality, the number of K-12 students taking standardized tests in U.S. public schools is at an all-time high, as is enthusiasm for using standardized testing to assess educational quality, despite evidence that it narrows the definition of education to one that devalues critical thinking and knowledge creation in favor of more easily tested abilities related to skill-based job training. The results of such research are of interest to me as a writing teacher since testing and the preparation for it have a direct effect on how students define what qualifies as " good writing " and, by extension, the writing selves they bring to the classroom.
