His impact on the fi elds of computer graphics, user interface software, and visualization was extraordinary, his ability to personally change people's lives even more so. He is remembered for his enthusiasm, his mentorship, his generosity, and, most of all, his laughter. Jim's technical accomplishments are well summarized elsewhere. 1,2 This collection of remembrances images him through the eyes of his many friends and colleagues, who were asked to write a personal note about what Jim meant to them.

Collaborative virtual environments for diagnosis and treatment planning are increasingly gaining ... more Collaborative virtual environments for diagnosis and treatment planning are increasingly gaining importance in our global society. Virtual and Augmented Reality approaches promised to provide valuable means for the involved interactive data analysis, but the underlying technologies still create a cumbersome work environment that is inadequate for clinical employment. This paper addresses two of the shortcomings of such technology: Intuitive interaction with multi-dimensional data in immersive and semi-immersive environments as well as stereoscopic multi-user displays combining the advantages of Virtual and Augmented Reality technology.

This article describes an emerging approach to the design of human-machine systems referred to as... more This article describes an emerging approach to the design of human-machine systems referred to as 'neuroadaptive interface technology'. A neuroadaptive interface is an ensemble of computer-based displays and controls whose functional characteristics change in response to meaningful variations in the user's cognitive and/or emotional states. Variations in these states are indexed by corresponding central nervous system activity, which control functionally adaptive modifications to the interface. The purpose of these modifications is to promote safer and more effective human-machine system performance. While fully functional adaptive interfaces of this type do not currently exist, there are promising steps being taken toward their development, and great potential value in doing so-value that corresponds directly to and benefits from a neuroergonomic approach to systems development. Specifically, it is argued that the development of these systems will greatly enhance overall human-machine system performance by providing more symmetrical communications between users and computerbased systems than currently exist. Furthermore, their development will promote a greater understanding of the relationship between nervous system activity and human behaviour (specifically work-related behaviour), and as such may serve as an exemplary paradigm for neuroergonomics. A number of current research and development areas related to neuroadaptive interface design are discussed, and challenges associated with the development of this technology are described.

Today, VR research and development efforts often focus on the continual innovation of interaction... more Today, VR research and development efforts often focus on the continual innovation of interaction styles and metaphors for virtual environments (VEs). New tools and interaction devices aim to increase the immersive experience rather than support seamless integration with real work scenarios. Even though users may soon perceive odours within VEs, real, task-oriented interaction within these environments will continue to lag behind. Combining these efforts can result in new user interfaces that reduce the cumbersome barriers prevalent in VEs today, finally unleashing the latent impact of this technology in everyday life. Implementing this vision requires an interdisciplinary and applied approach to integrate VR into the workplace. Mixed-reality display capabilities, useful multimodal interaction and perceptual, intuitive interfaces are major components of such an application-oriented and human-centered approach, for which we coined the term walk-up VR. ABSTRACT We present a quadtree-based selective refinement algorithm for real-time, view-dependent... more ABSTRACT We present a quadtree-based selective refinement algorithm for real-time, view-dependent image warping used to present images with mirror displays that require a non-linear predistortion. The algorithm applies two-pass rendering, and recursively generates and selectively refines the underlying image grid with locally adapted levels of detail. Each discrete level of detail is determined by computing and evaluating the displacement error on the image plane within the image space of the mirror optics. The algorithm generates and refines only those image portions that contain visible information by considering an oriented convex container of the rendered scene. While display specific details of the algorithm are explained based on the more complex case of a particular mirror display, the Virtual Showcase its general functionality is valid for other non-linear displays.

Today's software systems for medical visualization still suffer from a shortage of practical appl... more Today's software systems for medical visualization still suffer from a shortage of practical applications due to their lack of usability with respect to a large variety of users with different computer-skills and experiences. Furthermore, progress is often hampered by the lack of adequate software tools that allow research ideas to be rapidly accomplished, evaluated, and brought into routine. We developed an integrated software environment that is distinct because it, on the one hand, provides an application-builder toolbox for medical diagnosis and therapy. And, on the other hand, it allows for the development, integration, and user-centered evaluation of existing and new interaction techniques in 2-D, 3-D, and Virtual Reality (VR). The environment's interaction support is based on communicating application objects that employ a sophisticated message-based inter-object communication. In addition, the system contains a component for user-adapted interaction and system support. The system has been used for several clinical applications which are briefly described at the end of this paper.
