Guided by the belief that we cannot make broad extrapolations from the obedience studies without ... more Guided by the belief that we cannot make broad extrapolations from the obedience studies without first firmly establishing what has and has not been found using the paradigm itself, this article draws on 35 years of accumulated research and writings on the obedience paradigm to present a status report on the following salient questions and issues surrounding obedience to authority: (a) How should we construe the nature of authority in the obedience experiment? (b) Do predictions of those unfamiliar with the obedience experiment underestimate the actual obedience rates? (c) Are there gender differences in obedience? and (d) Have obedience rates changed over time?
Yields of prompt and non-prompt J/ψ, as well as Υ(1S) mesons, are measured by the CMS experiment ... more Yields of prompt and non-prompt J/ψ, as well as Υ(1S) mesons, are measured by the CMS experiment via their µ + µ − decays in PbPb and pp collisions at √ s NN = 2.76 TeV for quarkonium rapidity |y| < 2.4. Differential cross sections and nuclear modification factors are reported as functions of y and transverse momentum p T , as well as collision centrality. For prompt J/ψ with relatively high p T (6.5 < p T < 30 GeV/c), a strong, centrality-dependent suppression is observed in PbPb collisions, compared to the yield in pp collisions scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions.
In this article we present the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnO-TiO 2 nanocomposi... more In this article we present the spectral and nonlinear optical properties of ZnO-TiO 2 nanocomposites prepared by colloidal chemical synthesis. Emission peaks of ZnO-TiO 2 nanocomposites change from 340 nm to 385 nm almost in proportion to changes in E g . The nanocomposites show self-defocusing nonlinearity and good nonlinear absorption behaviour. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption increase with increasing TiO 2 volume fraction at 532 nm and can be attributed to the enhancement of exciton oscillator strength. ZnO-TiO 2 is a potential nanocomposite material for the tunable light emission and for the development of nonlinear optical devices with a relatively small limiting threshold.

Jet production in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV was stud... more Jet production in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV was studied with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 µb −1 . Jets are reconstructed using the energy deposited in the CMS calorimeters and studied as a function of collision centrality. With increasing collision centrality, a striking imbalance in dijet transverse momentum is observed, consistent with jet quenching. The observed effect extends from the lower cut-off used in this study (jet p T = 120 GeV/c) up to the statistical limit of the available data sample (jet p T ≈ 210 GeV/c). Correlations of charged particle tracks with jets indicate that the momentum imbalance is accompanied by a softening of the fragmentation pattern of the second most energetic, away-side jet. The dijet momentum balance is recovered when integrating low transverse momentum particles distributed over a wide angular range relative to the direction of the away-side jet.
