Functionalism Paradigm in Second Language Writing

This paper uses a corpus-based analysis systematic literature review to track the influence of fu... more This paper uses a corpus-based analysis systematic literature review to track the influence of functionalism paradigm in second language writing (SLW) over the last five years. The data were analyzed by using keywords and collocation analysis to map the closest association of functional paradigm to second language writing. It was then reviewed manually and thematized based on the research questions as the framework. Based on a corpus of 46 Scopus indexed journals ranges from 2017-2022 this study reveals that the influence of functionalism paradigm does not directly affect to SLW. Functional paradigm spawned the concept of context which then be interpreted and manifested into functional linguistic approach. Thus, studies on SLW revolves around the application of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) to either teaching or assessing SLW. The elements of functionalism paradigm that affects to SLW are the basic assumption and the values of functional paradigm that perceived each variable in a text has a purpose. As an implication, second language writing composition using SFL focuses on text purpose and lexicogrammatical features. Functional linguists perceive language diversity in second language writing as functional, ensuring mutual intelligibility if communicative functions work effectively.

This study aims to support student motivation in studying English with multimedia as the assistance. The use of multimedia such as pictures, videos, and games are expected to create an active atmosphere of learning and teaching. This practice was conducted for four times and the result show that students were very engage while studying English and the class atmosphere become more fun and less monotone. How is the use of multimedia mediates activity to teach formal invitation in a private Islamic Secondary School? I learned that students demonstrated better learning engagement during the lesson. In addition, it also encourage the students to be more creative and active.

In this study, the researcher used Qualitative Approach, which is thematic analysis is the foundation method of qualitative research. To identify the teacher perception on the use online assessment to assess reading comprehension, researcher will used interview to collect the data. The participants in this study were intensive reading lecturers of English language education program in Yogyakarta. The results of this study indicate that reading comprehension assessment using the online platform as a tool can assist teachers in assessing student work. In addition, by not giving restrictions to students in working on the task of making answers to their assignments beyond the teacher's expectations. Appraisals Analysis on the Argumentation Structure of Indonesian Undergraduate Students’ Research Articles

The data collection was conducted by analyzing the proceedings in the "Background" section written by undergraduate students at university in Indonesia. The data were then analyzed by using a corpus. This research found types of the argument of this study were proclaim, disclaim, entertain, and attribute. The lexical choice that was used proclaim with a total of 46. Entertain lexemes a total of 37. The next lexical choice was used disclaim with a total of 33. Finally, attribute a total of 26 as the lowest engagement in appraisal. Through the findings and discussion, this study implies that the more complex argumentation structure, the more academic vocabularies that the students could use to enhance the quality of their writing. In order to enable undergraduate students to be critical, disclaim lexemes through rebuttal section could be endorsed more in the writing activities. Since this study was limited to only one proceeding as the data, we suggest that more data sources can be conducted to broaden the discussion about this topic.

In the context of online teaching, social presence is vital for effective learning. This skill is perceived as a way to humanize the online learning process. This article explores how social presence is represented in the pre-service teacher's synchronous online classroom and how the development of social presence enables the pre-service teachers to develop their students' well-being and thus humanize online classrooms.Design/methodology/approachThe current study draws upon case study research. The data were collected from (1) synchronous online teaching simulation recordings of pre-service English teachers from the Language Classroom Management course and (2) interview transcripts from three participants. Both data sources were transcribed, coded and analyzed. A two-step coding scheme for pre-service English teachers' social presence was adapted from the Community of Inquiry (CoI) coding template.FindingsThis study reports that all the three social presence categories (i.e. cohesive, affective and interactive) emerged from their online teaching simulation. In addition, the development of social presence to humanize online classrooms from the pre-service teachers was found in these stages: (1) having a role model for teaching, (2) showing respect and being friendly and (3) adjusting the language of instructions to the students' level.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has been limited to the pre-service teachers in one university only. Therefore, this needs to be tested in wider settings and contexts.Practical implicationsTheoretically, this study has added students' well-being as the element that connects social presence to the humanizing online classroom. Meanwhile, practically, in relation to teacher education, this paper also recommends the teaching stages leading to a more humanized online learning.Originality/valueCurrent studies tend to describe social presence in experienced teachers' asynchronous online classrooms. Rarely did the studies explore social presence as practiced by pre-service teachers in the context of synchronous videoconferencing class. Furthermore, there has also been limited research connecting social presence with humanized classrooms.

This study was a self-observation involving 24 high school social studies students. The data were obtained from observation of student activities during learning, and the tasks carried out by students were in accordance with the basic competencies of the descriptive text material. The data were analyzed by conducting sorting the data and analyzing the sorted data by codifying and reporting the data. The results of this study showed that the application of data-driven learning with communicative learning methods can make students more confident in their abilities during the learning process. The use of data-driven learning is expected to increase students' motivation and learning abilities, especially in the field of writing.

This is a qualitative research with interview protocol as the research instrument. Four participants were recruited during this research to share their story in using online learning platform. Their experiences included their in class and out class learning. The students highlighted that the role of lecturer in blended learning management has been executed well, due to the ability of their lecturer to manage and to engage interactively in the online platform. The students were also excited in using ed.ted.lesson as their text mediated platforms to support their listening and speaking exposure.

Wallace’s Critical Reading Framework - For Non Professional Readers: Students’ Perception

Critical reading for pedagogical purpose, as constructed by Wallace (1999), proposes some princip... more Critical reading for pedagogical purpose, as constructed by Wallace (1999), proposes some principles that are applicable to be used by teachers. This research is aimed at describing the students' perception on the employment of Wallace's framework in the teaching of critical reading. The survey was conducted to 78 students, after accomplishing one-semester course. The questionnaire consists of three representative features of the framework. The first is field, on how the writer describes what is going on in the text. The second is mode, on how the writer organizes the content in the text. The last is tenor, on how the writer indicates his or her relationship with the readers. There are 50,2% students who perceived that field aspect is understandable, 48,2% students who marked that mode aspect is understandable, and 54% students who agreed that tenor aspect is undertsandable. However, the margin is relatively close for the affirmative and the opposite side. It ranges 1,5%: 1%. The positive remark of 1,5% showed that some contributing activities have influenced the students' critical reading ability. T-test results show that discussing texts presents the most significant factor (0.016), followed by think aloud practice (0.022), and checking the dictionaries (0.03).

This research is self-observational study that involved 18 students in online discussion. Data were obtained from the screenshot of synchronous online discussion, and the transcription of online discussion recording. The instructor employed Canvas Instructor as the platform. Thematic analysis was used in this study, and the findings suggested that the model of instructor scaffolding during synchronous online learning could be in the form of contingency, fading, and transfer responsibility. In this study, contingency plays an important role that makes the students' involvement during fading activities are more engaging. Transfer responsibilities activities were found less in the synchronous online learning in the form of task instruction for the offline meeting.

This paper is aimed at describing the students’ perception of the implementation of problem-based... more This paper is aimed at describing the students’ perception of the implementation of problem-based learning during the Materials Development course in the eve semester 2018. The participants were 58 students of English pre-service teachers. The data were collected through the 58 reflective writings at the end of the course, and the observation recording during the group discussion. Through qualitative analysis, there are five positive themes, and two negative themes found in the reflective writings. This study found that among three characteristics of Problem based learning, most of the students perceived positively in stimulating critical thinking and devoting authentic experiences. Whereas, there are also some students who perceived problem-based learning as challenging, especially in technical obstacles such as; the appearing of the lecturer’s stress during discussion session; not engaging friends in a group.

This study was a self-observation involving 24 high school social studies students. The data were obtained from observation of student activities during learning, and the tasks carried out by students were in accordance with the basic competencies of the descriptive text material. The data were analyzed by conducting sorting the data and analyzing the sorted data by codifying and reporting the data. The results of this study showed that the application of data-driven learning with communicative learning methods can make students more confident in their abilities during the learning process. The use of data-driven learning is expected to increase students' motivation and learning abilities, especially in the field of writing.

This is a qualitative research with interview protocol as the research instrument. Four participants were recruited during this research to share their story in using online learning platform. Their experiences included their in class and out class learning. The students highlighted that the role of lecturer in blended learning management has been executed well, due to the ability of their lecturer to manage and to engage interactively in the online platform. The students were also excited in using ed.ted.lesson as their text mediated platforms to support their listening and speaking exposure.

Critical reading for pedagogical purpose, as constructed by Wallace (1999), proposes some princip... more Critical reading for pedagogical purpose, as constructed by Wallace (1999), proposes some principles that are applicable to be used by teachers. This research is aimed at describing the students' perception on the employment of Wallace's framework in the teaching of critical reading. The survey was conducted to 78 students, after accomplishing one-semester course. The questionnaire consists of three representative features of the framework. The first is field, on how the writer describes what is going on in the text. The second is mode, on how the writer organizes the content in the text. The last is tenor, on how the writer indicates his or her relationship with the readers. There are 50,2% students who perceived that field aspect is understandable, 48,2% students who marked that mode aspect is understandable, and 54% students who agreed that tenor aspect is undertsandable. However, the margin is relatively close for the affirmative and the opposite side. It ranges 1,5%: 1%. The positive remark of 1,5% showed that some contributing activities have influenced the students' critical reading ability. T-test results show that discussing texts presents the most significant factor (0.016), followed by think aloud practice (0.022), and checking the dictionaries (0.03).

This study aims at describing the implementation of instructors' scaffolding in synchronous o... more This study aims at describing the implementation of instructors' scaffolding in synchronous online discussion, and observing the students' engagement in accordance to the course. This research is self-observational study that involved 18 students in online discussion. Data were obtained from the screenshot of synchronous online discussion, and the transcription of online discussion recording. The instructor employed Canvas Instructor as the platform. Thematic analysis was used in this study, and the findings suggested that the model of instructor scaffolding during synchronous online learning could be in the form of contingency, fading, and transfer responsibility. In this study, contingency plays an important role that makes the students' involvement during fading activities are more engaging. Transfer responsibilities activities were found less in the synchronous online learning in the form of task instruction for the offline meeting.

The participants were 58 students of English pre-service teachers. The data were collected through the 58 reflective writings at the end of the course, and the observation recording during the group discussion. Through qualitative analysis, there are five positive themes, and two negative themes found in the reflective writings. This study found that among three characteristics of Problem based learning, most of the students perceived positively in stimulating critical thinking and devoting authentic experiences. Whereas, there are also some students who perceived problem-based learning as challenging, especially in technical obstacles such as; the appearing of the lecturer’s stress during discussion session; not engaging friends in a group.
