I am currently Professor of Information & Decision Sciences at the University of Illinois in Chicago
I have extensive professional experience in the US as a certified public accountant and as a risk, valuation and technology consultant in the US, Europe, Latin America and Asia.
I am the author of numerous academic papers and of six books: Financial Dynamics (Wiley 2003); Valuing Technology (Wiley 2002); Global Electronic Commerce (MIT Press 2000); Global Innovation Management (Palgrave Macmillan 2008); Red Wired: China’s Internet Revolution (Cyan, 2009); and Structural Equation Models (CreateSpace, 2012).
My newest book Structural Equation Models provides an accessible summary of ordination (PLS) analysis of variance (LISREL / AMOS) and systems of regression equation approaches to influence network modeling in SEM. It outlines the decision process for research design, sample size and acquisition, as well as interpretation of results (including hypothesis testing). This book offers an excellent summary of SEM for practitioners and researchers alike
I am the co-editor of Electronic Commerce Research and Applications, and have served on the editorial boards of Management Science, ISR, IJEC, SSRN, and other scholarly journals. I have held positions on the faculties at the University of Michigan, University of Southern California, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, Nanyang Technological University, and other academic institutions.
I have advised on valuation and technology strategy for Microsoft, Intel, Motorola, V-Tech, Aerospace Corporation, IBM, Pacific Bell, and other technology firms.

Applications of path analysis with structural equation models are steadily expanding over a broad... more Applications of path analysis with structural equation models are steadily expanding over a broad range of disciplines - especially in the social sciences where many if not most key concepts are not directly observable. Recent decades have witnessed a remarkable acceleration of interest in path analysis for the computer-intensive analysis of large datasets in networks and other complex, unstructured problems. These techniques include path analysis with regression (PLS), implementations of analysis of variance algorithms (LISREL, AMOS, EQS) and simultaneous equations regression. Applications are popular in medical imaging, survey research, marketing, finance and other fields that generate very large datasets. This book offers a comprehensive and accessible review of the current state of the art that will allow researchers to maximize research output from their datasets and confidently use available software for data analysis. In this commentary, I discuss the major results and implications of ''Critical mass and willing t... more In this commentary, I discuss the major results and implications of ''Critical mass and willing to pay for social networks" by J. Christopher Westland. I argue that Westland provides a new perspective on understanding and measuring network effects and critical mass on social networks. His research results also suggest that there may be a ''first-to-critical-mass advantage" rather than first-mover advantage among social networking websites. Extensions to his research include considering multiple firms and using theories such as organizational ecology and organizational evolution to examine the survival and competition among social networking websites.

Cost Models for Future Software Life Cycle Processes: COCOMO 2.0

Current software cost estimation models, such as the 1981 Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO) for so... more Current software cost estimation models, such as the 1981 Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO) for software cost estimation and its 1987 Ada COCOMO update, have been experiencing increasing difficulties in estimating the costs of software developed to new life cycle processes and capabilities. These include non-sequential and rapid-development process models; reuse-driven approaches involving commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) packages, re-engineering, applications composition, and applications generation capabilities; object-oriented approaches supported by distributed middleware; and software process maturity initiatives. This paper summarizes research in deriving a baseline COCOMO 2.0 model tailored to these new forms of software development, including rationale for the model decisions. The major new modeling capabilities of COCOMO 2.0 are a tailorable family of software sizing models, involving Object Points, Function Points, and Source Lines of Code; nonlinear models for software reuse and re-engineering; an exponentdriver approach for modeling relative software diseconomies of scale; and several additions, deletions and updates to previous COCOMO effort-multiplier cost drivers. This model is serving as a framework for an extensive current data collection and analysis effort to further refine and calibrate the model's estimation capabilities.
