The thesis approaches memory and perception in Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse borrowing central ideas from Henri Bergson. Reading Woolf's memoirs in Moments of Being, the thesis follows Woolf's problematical assertion of how memories, in their fragmented and fleeting nature, seem to constitute a person as a complete", and how creativity and artistic representation seem fundamentally linked to the operations of memory. The thesis advances by close-reading the novels in question, employing Bergsonian terminology as well as notions from J. Hillis Miller's Ariadne's Thread and Fiction and Repetition. In the conclusion, two of the principal processes are identified as the line and the interval, which underlie the operations of memory that create a positive, accessible whole, both in perception, recollection and character. The analyses thus shed light on the novels in question and on Woolf's poetics.
