The present paper offers an overview on how the implementation of neoliberal policies and the pro... more The present paper offers an overview on how the implementation of neoliberal policies and the process of commodification added to the pre-existing condition of South African racial relocation, contributing to the country's contemporary high levels of urban poverty and inequality. The general understanding of poverty and inequality changed over time in a context of a neoliberal economic vision and increasing commodification, with repercussions on welfare programmes. In South Africa these changes seem to have been particularly pernicious in a society already vulnerable from the historical legacy of the Apartheid.
