How Can I Help My Child With Math When I Don't Understand How It's Being Taught?

This session will emphasize new strategies such as number talks, non-algorithmic problems, tools such as tape diagrams, area models, number disks, and drawings to introduce parents to math concepts, and ways teachers can communicate with parents to promote support for math.

For many years, the notion of creativity was indistinguishable from views of intelligence.

In 2002, the program was expanded when UGA became a partnered with Georgia Tech in the operations of the GIFT program. The program's key strategy has been to provide fellows (teachers) with intensive real-world experience by having them spend a summer working alongside university-level researchers in STEM-related fields.

According to Levine, By the end of fourth grade, African-American and Latino students, and poor students of all races, are two years behind their wealthier, predominantly white peers in reading and math.

In this session, teachers will explore new strategies and tools used to develop number sense and place value, including number talks, non-algorithmic problem-solving, and hands-on activities utilizing tools such as tape diagrams, area models, number disks, and drawings. The presenter will provide teachers with suggestions for enriching and extending math for gifted students and resources, including books and websites.

As students study materials and develop a case, they practice critical thinking, creative problem-solving, fact-finding, and public speaking. In addition, they learn about relevant legal principles and the role of the government in making and enforcing laws and protecting the rights of individuals. The presenters will share ideas and resources for implementing mock trials for gifted students.

Since parents typically learned math as a series of algorithms, without conceptual understanding of place value, number sense, and problem-solving context, this new way can bewilder and frustrate them. This session will emphasize new strategies and tools such as number talks, non-algorithmic problems, tape diagrams, area models, number disks, and drawings to introduce parents to math concepts and encourage them to relate their own mathematical understanding to place value and number sense. The presenter will also provide teachers with websites, examples of parent letters, and information on planning and implementing “Math Fun Night” for parents.
