The objective of the study is to identify points of contact between the fields in terms of theoretical and methodological aspects. A broader account of process-oriented research in TS is carried out (Ferreira; Schwieter, 2014; Hurtado Albir et al.; 2015 among others), followed by a review of reading and translation (Shreve et al.,1993, and others). Overall, findings indicate that task purpose and translators’ experience influence reading in translation, yet reading, translation, and reading during translation entail parallel processes of a different nature that are associated in reading during translation.

A falta de consenso em relação ao papel das conjunções na compreensão leitora justifica este estudo. Os dados são provenientes de participantes cursando Letras – Secretariado Executivo em Inglês (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina). As tarefas do estudo incluíram resumo, compreensão leitora, preenchimento de lacunas e questionário retrospectivo. Os resultados gerais confirmam os efeitos benéficos das conjunções na compreensão leitora. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: conjunções; compreensão leitora; resumos. ABSTRACT: This article is based on a study investigating the impact of conjunctions on reading comprehension and summarization processes in Second Language under the light of the textbase model (Kintsch & van Dijk, 1978), and Theory of Cohesion (Halliday & Ha...

Assim, foram discutidos conceitos como Língua Materna e Língua Estrangeira (SPINASSÉ, 2006) e algumas concepções de língua, bem como a história do ensino de LE no Brasil e da EJA (BRASIL, 2002; entre outros). Finalmente, foi proposta uma relação entre letramento consciência fonológica para o ensino de LE na EJA.

I thank Fabiana for listening, sharing thoughts, articles, worries and laughter and always helping out. I thank Cyntia for always being ready to help, many times before help was requestedand I thank her for preparing the online questionnaires, too! I thank Donesca for helping me out in many, many ways. I thank Deise and Andreana as well. I thank my friend Eli Lopes, who was very supportive of my continuing education plans. And I thank Norma Fonseca from UFMG for her support with Translog TM and with matters of processes-oriented translation research. I thank the people who work at the PPGI office, in particular João Carlos da Silva for helping whenever I needed it. I thank CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento) for the financial support provided. I thank my brother, Cláu, and my sister, Cris, for stories that we shared when we were kids. I thank my sister for helping me out with my usual short-noticed requests and everything else. I thank a very special teacher I was lucky to have guiding me from my teenage years to my early twentiesa story-creator, magicmaker, narrator, Raquel Boyes, and I thank friends who shared the stories created, and by doing so, met the challenges that were part of our formative years. I thank everyone who believed I should meet the challenge of writing this dissertation, no matter what. Finally, I thank Geoff, my husband, our son Lucas and our daughter Larayou are my theme, plot, resolution and all. Thank out for sharing this story and many others. A story was a form of telepathy. By means of inking symbols onto a page, she was able to send thoughts and feelings from her mind to her reader's. It was a magical process, so commonplace that no one stopped to wonder at it.

The lack of consensus regarding conjunctions in reading comprehension justifies this study. Data were collected from participants attending the fourth semester in Letras - Secretariado Executivo em Ingles (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina). The study tasks comprised summarization, reading comprehension, gap-filling and a retrospective questionnaire. Overall results confirmed beneficial effects of conjunctions on reading comprehension.

Since this interface has not been fully explored, we propose this exploratory-experimental study in order to analyze the influence of reading purpose and translation experience on summary production tasks and translation tasks in the English-Portuguese language pair. Although this study’s participants’ sample was small and results significance could not be confirmed with statistical tests, results found seem to corroborate the hypothesis that target texts translated by professional translators were better evaluated than target texts produced by undergraduates. However, texts summarized by undergraduate students were better evaluated than those summarized by professional translators, which does not confirm another study hypothesis. Results also seem to confirm the hypotheses that professional translators carry out summary production and translation ta...

The experiences reported here indicate that perspective adopted led to a practice that was considered meaningful by the pre-service teachers involved, since activities were performed by students with noticeable motivation and engagement. Additionally, according to the pre-service teachers, results were more positive than expected considering the objectives proposed in terms of understanding and use of the linguistic content and the application of teaching mediated by oral and written genres.

The study was motivated by the need for further understanding of the topic that was acknowledged by several researchers in the field of Applied Linguistics. The methodology adopted involved data collection from 12 participants from the Letras-Secretariado Executivo Bilíngue course at Universidade Federal de Santa Catariana who were all attending the fourth semester of the course. The activities performed by the participants consisted of a summary task, a reading comprehension task, a gap-filling task with conjunctions and a retrospective questionnaire. The participants' reading times were recorded and subsequently used in the analysis. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively examining results from the summary task and the reading comprehension task, with data from the gap-filling task and the retrospective questionnaire contributing to the discussion of the results. This study's findings indicate a facilitative effect of conjunctions for both the summary task and the reading comprehension activity. Overall results suggest that conjunctions' signaling potential may assist readers in the selection process of relevant information, which is crucial for successful reading and summarization practice.

Furthermore, strategic readers approach a text while keeping in mind the situation in which they are reading, i.e., reading purposes and text type, and while monitoring their comprehension (CARRELL, 1989; 1998; PARIS; LIPSON; WIXSON, 1983; PARIS; WASIK; TURNER, 1991). The present study aims at investigating to what extent eight Brazilian university-level students are strategic when producing written summaries of an expository text in English as L2. Participants were enrolled in a workshop on writing summaries about expository texts in English; their text production was collected and analyzed in terms of their strategies for identifying controlling, central and secondary ideas. Participants were proficient and strategic readers in both their L1 (Portuguese) and L2 (English), and were knowledgeable about academic genres. Our hypothesis was that the readers would be able to construct a meaningful and coherent representation of the text while monitoring their reading comprehension. The process of monitoring comprehension would be reflected in the reader’s summaries. Results revealed that the majority of the participants adopted strategies when approaching the text, and that they were able to build a coherent mental representation of the text; however, results also suggest some readers omitted central and secondary ideas.
