These exhibitions address the organization and strengthening of different Computer Art groups around the country. We highlight the role of the Art Institute at University of Brasilia, pioneer in this research area, promoting spaces for discussions, courses, theoretical-practical methodologies and exhibitions. The art modalities shown use innovative devices, concepts, modes of manufacturing, organizing data and information deeply inter-mediated by computational technologies while integrated with Computer Science, Robotics, Neuroscience, Ecology, Mathematics and Physics, among others. It was possible to observe during this period how the diffusion of sensor technology, physical computing, 3D print and neuroart became more intensive on the artworks pointing out to an increasing and more pervasive use of computer technology in Art.

These works, which encompass a twilight zone in-between organic and artificial life, including plants, bees, bacteria and robots, are inspired by nature and models of thought drawn from scientific to ancient knowledge, such as indigenous Amerindian traditions and eastern cultures. This paper aims to present NANO's creative production and methods, focusing on aspects of art education, transculturalism, sustainability, based on the experience of the project "Land as an Educational Principle".

The question is not new to artists involved with telematic systems, but it emerged again during the last three years, resulting from research on computer art, science, and telematic systems developed by artists Guto Nóbrega and Malu Fragoso at NANO Lab (UFRJ-Brazil). The idea of a “Telematic Embrace” was introduced by artist Roy Ascott in 2003 and is constantly reviewed with technological development through artistic projects that explore processes of creating artificial interfaces which in some way are connected with natural and organic elements, experimenting on possible hybridization, interaction, presence and context in telematic environments. In this paper, the presentation of practical, experimental and technological procedures are in focus, but also an approach to the subject relating artistic practices and science research in collaboration with other research groups and laboratories.

We believe that telematic situation enhances the vitality of an aesthetic experience and that this experience provides a renewed state of consciousness. The idea of a plant or insect-machine-human interaction definitely enhances our capacity of perception. In this paper, the presentation of artistic practical, experimental and technologic procedures are in focus, together with research strategies applied at NANO.

This kind of art, immanently connected to computers, emphasizes sensory, poetic and aesthetic experiences inter-mediated by computational devices, which became also the artworks support/media. It is an art focused on the trilogy: artists, computers and public. The Art Institute at the University of Brasilia created and promotes Computer Art courses, exhibitions and the theoretical-practical methodologies described here, such as the concept of meta-installation. Since then we here propose to examine this artistic production which, in our view, expresses an emergent Brazilian identity in contemporary art.
