ABSTRACT: This article aims to analyze the facts that culminated in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Since the Great Game there has been an intensification of competition for the domination of Afghanistan, first between Russia and the British Empire and then between the Soviet Union and the United States. The latter eventually led to the collapse of the country resulting in a civil war that continues to this day.
