A CBR system that assists professionals and relatives in this area is presented. On the Mental Health area, a certain kind of problems can be fitted in an equal rank, usually designated “behavior disorder” (schizophrenia, alcoholism, etc.). Such cases in which the disease attacks the patient’s quotidian behavior directly demand not only clinical care but a constant attendants’ supervision (nurses, relatives, etc.). The quick identification of the characteristic behavior symptoms and the training of the attendants and the experts in this area are only some of the items that can be decisive for the total or partial reinstatement of the patient to the society. ABSTRACT Optical monitoring systems are necessary to manufacture multilayer thin-film optical fil... more ABSTRACT Optical monitoring systems are necessary to manufacture multilayer thin-film optical filters with low tolerance on spectrum specification. Furthermore, to have better accuracy on the measurement of film thickness, direct monitoring is a must. Direct monitoring implies acquiring spectrum data from the optical component undergoing the film deposition itself, in real time. In making film depositions on surfaces of optical components, the high vacuum evaporator chamber is the most popular equipment. Inside the evaporator, at the top of the chamber, there is a metallic support with several holes where the optical components are assembled. This metallic support has rotary motion to promote film homogenization. To acquire a measurement of the spectrum of the film in deposition, it is necessary to pass a light beam through a glass witness undergoing the film deposition process, and collect a sample of the light beam using a spectrometer. As both the light beam and the light collector are stationary, a synchronization system is required to identify the moment at which the optical component passes through the light beam.

The learning power of FAN is based on the association of its units and on the use of granularity for representing information. As a method for representing complex environments, FAN can be used in pattern recognition, classification and diagnosis. The paper is focused on the principles governing FAN. This paper describes and compares the development of two organizational structures to represent m... more This paper describes and compares the development of two organizational structures to represent medical decision making strategies. We generate the solution to a new problem by applying a previous solution from a medical record in a CBR system that performs decision-making about hypertension drug therapy. The case libraries are structured in accordance with the approaches of flat memory and discrimination network. Cases are originated by a retrospective knowledge acquisition about 47 patients who underwent ambulatory care of a university hospital. The similarity-based retrieval employed in the flat structure resembles what physicians do when handling their routine cases of arterial hypertension. Physicians identify a similar case in memory by recognizing the content embedded in the new situation, like a script. The hypothetico-deductive method for searching the case solution follows a similar strategy to the one represented in the prioritized discrimination network. The inclusion of cases in the case library of the discrimination network required more complex procedures than in the case library of the flat memory. These two decision support systems could contribute significantly to patient care. The system we are researching on has educational purposes as well.

Temporal organization of events can emerge in complex systems, like neural networks. Here, random... more Temporal organization of events can emerge in complex systems, like neural networks. Here, random graph and cellular automaton are used to represent coupled neural structures, in order to investigate the occurrence of synchronization. The connectivity pattern of this toy model of neural system is of Newman-Watts type, formed from a regular lattice with additional random connections. Two networks with this coupling topology are connected by extra random links and an impulse stimulus is either constantly or periodically applied to a unique neuron. Numerical simulations reveal that this model can exhibit a variety of dynamic behaviors. Usually, the whole system achieves synchronization; however, the oscillation frequencies of the stimulus and of each network can be different. The dynamics is evaluated in function of the network size, the amount of the randomly added edges and the number of time steps in which a neuron can remain firing. The biological relevance of these results is discussed.

Personal assistants that help users with several tasks like finding information, learning, scheduling calendars or consulting to decision-making are generalpurpose systems that can be viewed as a collection of intelligent agents. A distributed framework with three different types of agents will be defined in this paper. Each type of agent uses different intelligent techniques to solve specific problems. The combination of these agents provides an environment that supports and mediates the cooperative work and learning in a network. The use of the proposed framework for supporting distance learning will be shown as an application. In addition, this paper will discuss another possible scenario: an application for working capital administration.

When dealing with economic decision making, (e.g., financial decision making, budgeting, business... more When dealing with economic decision making, (e.g., financial decision making, budgeting, business feasibility evaluation), one always needs to model cash flows that are uncertain by nature. Due to the lack of information, one has to rely on expert's knowledge to perform such task. Experts use their expertise that combines knowledge and experiences within the context. We propose a system that builds a fuzzy cash flow from the outcome of a Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) system. This outcome is a set of numeric values where we calculate the Most Typical Values (MTV). The CBR system suggests a set of estimated values, appraising cash flow accounts. The system selects the values that better represent the given set using MTV approach, automatically creating Most Typical Fuzzy Sets describing values such as "around $500.00". The content of the fuzzy cash flow consists of actual numbers (provided by certain liabilities and receivables), stated values (such as production targets and sales forecasts) and fuzzy constraints. The actual and stated values are combined with the fuzzy constraints with the purpose of building fuzzy cash flows to support financial decision making.

U... more Monitoring and adjusting financial health problems play central role in the firm's performance. Usually, small firms face difficulties in these tasks for lacking human resources and incapacity to afford a consultant. By analyzing the nature of the diagnosis and the solution of financial problems one can identify two different reasoning: during the diagnosis phase, the process is basically intuitive due to complex relations between financial ratios and problems; in the solution phase, the analyst follows a deductive approach searching for the causes and adjustments to the identified problem. Based on these aspects and on the motivation of providing a computational system to aid small firms, we built a Hybrid Intelligent System to diagnose (through Neural Network) and indicate solutions (through Expert System) to financial problems. In this paper we discuss the nature of the problems and present the system.

A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo investigar o papel da Acao Tecnologia, Educacao, Cidadania e Profissionalizacao de Pessoas com Necessidades Especificas (Deficientes, Superdotados e com Transtornos Globais do Desenvolvimento) – TEC NEP, desde sua implantacao, no ano 2000 ate o ano de 2010, no que concerne ao processo de inclusao voltado para a Educacao Profissional e Tecnologica. Para isso optou-se por um estudo de caso de orientacao etnografica em instituicoes da Rede Federal de Educacao Profissional, Cientifica e Tecnologica. Conclui-se que uma verdadeira politica publica de inclusao que tenha um enfoque pleno, que adota como resposta social todo o ciclo inclusivo (acesso, permanencia, saida e exito sociolaboral) buscara, alem de possibilitar o ingresso do estudante com necessidades especificas, meios para que tenha a possibilidade de obter, ao final de seu curso, trabalho e renda.
