Recent research on continuo in the Portuguese language: a preliminary analysis
Abstract: The aim of this article is to present a preliminary version of the current state of research on continuo in the Portuguese language. Academic production from the period 2002 to 2022 defended in
Brazilian and Portuguese postgraduate programmes and published in the Annals of the annual Anppom conferences and in Qualis A music journals was surveyed and analysed. A total of twenty-four works were identified. Their subsequent analysis made it possible to define five categories
of study, namely, treatises, theory, repertoire, teaching, and editing.
Keywords: Continuo. Partimento. Accompanied solfeggio. Current state of research
Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to reflect upon the first three semesters of the harpsichord curses offered to beginners at the Music Department of the Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil. More specifically, I am going to consider the motivations, and the main contributions of these courses so far. Firstly, harpsichord teaching in Brazil is historically contextualized. Secondly, I discuss the students' expectations, and the potential developments of the course. To this end I use the answers given by students to a set of questions formulated by myself, which were object of a debate during a meeting at the Music Department at the end of the first term of 2011. To the majority of the students, the main motivation to seek a harpsichord course is the usual one, namely to complement their understanding of " Baroque music ". However, some of them have more specific aims involving specialization in the field and professionalization as harpsichordists. The most important developments are the active questioning of crystallized practices in performance, and the broadening of the knowledge about the musical aesthetics from the 16 th to the 18 th centuries.
